I'm a programmer, at least theoretically
but it seems that most people don't seem to realize that finishing huge solo programming projects, games particularly, is such a unique and different beast that's completely it's own field and has about as much in common with other programming fields as webdev or microprocessor shit does
so many people go into game dev with PHDs or years in some other field, then get completely chewed up and spat out

Day 27 on a Thread for Project C-Con โ "Is that a Donut?" Edition
Journal logs are being posted into /agdg/ daily.
Went and looked back at the 3D modeling tutorial for Blender, I haven't been on it for a bit so we did a few minutes of it. We started off by scaling the entire model to a proper size and fixing any issues of that, so next time we'll be adding more details to the sprinkles besides just dots, making the donut model a bit more realistic and interesting.
What is Project C-Con?

im starting to think that bocchi is some kinda meaningless brainrot, and that goto has no personality or identifiable traits that would facilitate creation of humorous content. Why is this so hard? There is SO MUCH to
learn.
>learn something
that's good, but there's so much more. It never ends.
You can't just make the game. You have to learn and fail over and over.
>no one to support you
>no one to give deadlines
>no one to mentor you
I can't even just chill and listen to music because I have to read documentation and figure things out on the fly.
This was easy on paper. Just spend 6 hours a day making the game, and 4 hours learning 3d modelling. 2 months in and I haven't even started the donut tutorial because coding 6 hours a day would be an achievement in itself.
You don't appreciate how hard things are or why co-op or RPGs are overscoped until you actually start doing stuff. Anons doing this after doing a jobby are honestly just really impressive.
Good luck, anons. Add skill.
Thanks again to the fellas buying my game and leaving a review! Glad you enjoyed it.

Btw the new steam is more localized, if your game doesn't have translation in x language it most likely won't appear in new and trending for x country,

>>528999094It's a team sport for a reason anon. Even Zork was made by 4 people. There really is just too much to do. If you're a solo developer you're greatly limiting the scope of what you can do.
Especially if you try to be the pure pristine solo warrior AGDG praises where they don't even want to commission others or hire playtesters and the credits page needs to be exactly 1 line long.
Hell, Balatro had a private discord with a hundred playtesters that played and tested the build every single day, if the developer just kept to himself until release it wouldn't have been nearly as addictive and polished. Putting the game 50 times on DD still wouldn't compare in scope to how much Balatro was tested.

Game design question:
Say units wear armor that grants them damage reduction but decreases their movement range.
Now there are attacks that decrease armor permanently and thus make affected units more vulnerable.
Should the status effect also increase movement range?
The logic is that since the armor is breaking then it should weight less, but limiting movement is one of the downsides of armor.
>>529005608Gaben risked so much by allowing it on his marketplace, completely justified cut
>>529005608Steam assumes the most risk though
>>529005740impossible to answer
>>529005740Would you say armor breaking happens more often on the player units or the enemy units? Can the player break down his own armor? Can units take off/swap the armor in combat?
One possible thing that could happen is a player makes a strat that involves putting on heavy armor, tanking a hit or two, and then breaks down his own armor so he can now move fast.
If breaking armor happens more often on the enemy units, I would not increase movement range because player might think buffing the enemy speed is undesirable so he never ends up using armor break. If it happens on the player as well, I'd give them increased movement range since it can open up new tactics.
>>529000585Another dev who profited from the early 10s indie goldrush. His expectations are outdated and completely warped
>>529006006The main upside is that it could open up new tactics, but I have 2 main concerns:
1. Armor can have other downsides apart from decreasing movement range. As an example, closed helms decrease accuracy.
2. It can make the game needlessly complex and put players in unforeseen scenarios. As an example, say there's an enemy that deals high damage but has low movement to compensate. Attacking recklessly with armor breaking actions without finishing it off in a single turn would essentially create a more dangerous enemy.
does anyone have a good formula for calculating the price of scaling upgrades?
something that should take into account:
- a base price
- current upgrade level
- a scaling factor which affect how much prices increase per upgrade
also, if those upgrades should affect some stats (like leveling up a character increases skill points, or in an idle game it would increase resource acquisition), what's a good way of determining that increase? ideally also in a way that scales using a base boost amount and factor.
any online docs that are useful for this sort of stuff?
>>529006719current price -> 1.5 x current price
rinse repeat
Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)
Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."
Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

Although if a genre has been basically abandoned you can get away with less immense updates. I don't see an issue with it. If you love the series and haven't been served, then it's fine to want to make that game.
Now, I didn't watch that video, if someone is remaking Dark Souls with ps1 graphics, I would call that creatively bankrupt. We get one of those games every year and it's very well done. So to me, that is bizarre (I didn't watch the video though I could be missing something.)
>>529007961I will add men, the teams will be mixed. I am just concentrating on the mechanics for now.
bros I got a question. whats the point of coom games? like, how are you meant to play them after you cum? is there ANY point to a coom game having content after the first sex scene? you'd just cum and close the game, right? and if the game string it out over such a long time delaying the first sex scene until lots of gameplay, you'd just get blue balls, right?
it seems like most coom games are incomplete, but how would a model coom game even be structured? like, 20minutes of gameplay culminating in a hot sex scene, roll credits?
>>529010087>wasnt like this a decade agoyeah stardew valley was definitely not a copy of harvest moon
I've been searching for a writer for my game for over a month now. everyone I encountered acts like a tortured soul and every time, it ends with them either claiming they're just so busy they won't even have a minute to spare for my project, crashing out and having a mental breakdown after a week or just ghosting me.
is this a common thing for videogame writers? should I look outside of gaming-related communities?
>>529010558gooners cum multiple times per sessions, i believe
>>529010375>StardewSurely you can find a better example, release shartdew was very barebones and still had insane marketing because it was released 10 years ago with way less competition and is made by the son of a boeing engineer. It took YEARS of work from both the devs and the modding community to get to that point, many games cannot afford to keep working on flops.
>>529010590creatives are usually tortured souls, idk what you were expecting
>>529010590yes, and it is actually pretty hard. you basically have to do it yourself but if you want someone else to do it then try giving them a starting off point and tell them to fill the rest of the page.
if you also need someone to manage that then you're screwed.

Artists are fucking nuts.

>>529010735I'm actually starting to think that this might be the thing that chases them away.
I gave them all a pretty detailed document with backstories, key plot points and main characters. I thought it would help them, but maybe they were expecting to be the sole creative voice and maybe they think my prewritten shit is more of a hindrance.

>>529017198it can show you what not to do, if you are interested in doing something creative.
>>529017198Nobody cares about using it for references. People care only about two things broadly.
1. That you dont let AI be the one who does the creative fun part of the development, because then that makes the game feel soulless. Even if AI could make assets that feel like they have soul, the moment you tell most people that it was made with AI, it will suddenly lose its soul.
2. Trying to not normalize AI slop. If AI slop gets normalized broadly even if most of it at first is made by genuine hobbyists who enjoy the process of prompting or whatever, it then just becomes question of very short time until some botfarm starts to flood the internet with AI generated content that has never touched a human. AI invented the topic, then turned that into a prompt, then turned that prompt into AI slop, then uploaded it with no human oversight. Just passive income for cynical hasslers who got lucky and just waste energy and internet bandwidth with their slop machine.

Im genuinely the most creative guy you would hope to come across, but i have fucking nothing to prove it. My mind is extremely bizarre functioning in a way that gives me euphoria just daydreaming and thinking about concepts-ideas for games,GAME MECHANICS n how they would function or come together, character concepts and designs, colour patterns, scenes, scenery, amazing music playing in my head(and my voice is too monotonous for me to voice record the melodies in order to remember them),thinking about possible past lives ive had and experiences in them give me amazing feelings, thinking of bizarre/absurd/surreal/slapstick concepts and situations, worldbuilding random details and histories and fkn truly unique shit that would blow the fuck away all the elder scrolls lore faggots, could list off a bunch of other shit but i already lost track, film ideas, fun video ideas, personal esoteric discoveries insights or just "meme" shit with potential to go viral, etc. My mind even amuses me just with combining words or letters in ways that i find enjoyable funny or cool, creating character names or just names for random non existing shit.
Im not joking when i am saying this that i am walking goldmine of ideas that could change gaming and more. What only separates me from like a renaissance genius is admittedly i cannot perhaps do it with "purpose", like u know when they did some super crazy painting and there is like profound mathematical architectural anatomical shit within it etc stuff like that - i cant and wont be able to and im not too bothered about that.
My only problem is that historically through my life i cannot make myself do shit. Ill start doing something then abandon it within minutes. Its crazy. Im 27 now and ive been trying to make myself do something since age 12, its given me a lot of fucking stress in my life. Thankfully i discovered taoism not so long ago so i dont really bother about anything anymore.

execution of good ideas does
you can't even make a finished game and as such your ideas are worthless
you're just like all the other shitposters in this general failing to execute on their oh so great ideas and every year turning a little bit more schizo as a result
sometimes it feels like people enjoy video games, but not playing them
if that makes sense
like they treat video games as an interactive museum, or a casually interactive movie, rather than an experience to become deeply invested in
i say this because black myth wukong is the biggest selling singleplayer game of recent time, but only ~30% of players actually completed it
baldur's gate 3, ~20%
cyberpunk 2077, ~35%
elden ring, ~20%
hogwarts legacy, ~25%
days gone, ~30%
stray, ~40%
god of war, ~50%
dragon's dogma 2, ~20%
the majority of gamers don't actually finish video games
they play the first 3 hours of them, get bored, and go back to scrolling social media
if you want money, design your game to be easily promoted and impulse purchased
>>529026498Half of them are way too fucking long, imagine watching a 40 hour movie.
Just remember, it only takes $500k of revenue to put into US treasury bonds, which, at 4% will yield $20k/year, which you can live off of comfortably in a B-tier European country like Poland for the rest of your life. All it takes is to release a half decent game that a major vtuber plays once.
>>529025729I mean you could in theory have a good idea while failing to build it, not because it's impossible to build but because the person trying to do it is failing for one reason or another. I'm not opposed to that possibility but there's no game as long as you don't build it. What does it matter if the idea is good when there's no game.
>>529024950Anon, be careful about ur ideas

>>529020379There exists a thing called "noosphere" where your thoughts and ideas go to, someone in this world has the ability to siphon and purposefully excavate ideas from there, I think the rich and their puppets are able to do this. >>529026498The ideal video game length as you get older is something like 5-10 hours.
There are so many games I want to play (like Metaphor and Dogma 2) but I realize it's going to be a 50+ hour time commitment and I only have ~10 hours per week to play video games.
>>529026613>imagine watching a 40 hour movie.People do that all the time. There are TV shows that has 4 seasons.
Maybe more video games need to have "episodes"
>>529026498Most people struggle from self-inflicted ADT as a result of their doomscrolling brain melting mobile addiction. As such they struggle to do anything that takes longer than their minuscule attention span can handle.
>>529026498the reason is gameplay loops
you can only loop so much for some people. give me shorter games with less repetition
>>529026331My goal is to become 2018 cris.
>>529026498That happens because the vast majority of players are roleplayers and explorers, not killers.
Killers are like 10-20% of all gaymers, and they mostly play pvp games.
The people that actually want to play a game for it's story are the roleplayers and they're casual as fuck.
Trying to make a complex story with a complex combat is missing the understanding of player psychology.
killers are happy with an arcade mode where they can do motion inputs with 3 characters and frame perfect cancels to dodge 0.00001% of 1KO hits.
roleplayers are happier with a Visual novel.
explorers want is a huge map with a pokedex to find some random pokemon hidden in a secret part of the map.
archievers want to collect all the hidden coins of the game.
>>529026857Games with less repetition are harder to make. The more unique content you need to make as a dev the longer you're gonna take.
>>529025092Thanks anon. Before I knew aggy daggy existed I tried to start an amateur dev thread on /v/. Among the /v/irgins telling me to kms there were a few people that told me to come here and one guy even asked me about some of my game ideas. I told him a few and he did this long post (2019 or 2020 so no, it wasn't AI) giving detailed feedback on my ideas and told me that he could tell I was gonna make it. 5 years later, still not much to show for it. Heh. I screen capped his post because I'm just that starved of encouragement but I must have deleted it.
>>529025159No million dollar ideas, nor even 100k+. I'll give you one of my shittier 10k+ ideas. Something that the Simulator Games meme might push to relative success through sheer autism of the sim players. A surprisingly deep spearfishing game with a basic story and shit loads of fish species to hunt, hazards like great whites/tigers/bull sharks to look out for. Replay value by starting out in shallow waters with snorkel, win competitions to get prize money, upgrade to scuba systems to go deeper and deeper. Customise boat. Cull invasive species for conservation. Find neat collectibles to add some more Steam achievements, like on ocean floor there might be Dutch treasure chests, China porcelain, native cultural knickknacks, clues of the existence of ayylmaos. Play as male or female, give the female a banging body, different outfights with photo mode.
>>529026201I'm being facetious and self deprecating for comedic effect. I did at least submit 2 demos here, both given good constructive feedback. >>529026838the issue is video games require effort and focus, while tv shows or movies you can put on in the background and doom scroll
i really think video games aren't as appreciated as people make them seem
you have the isolated spergs who love singleplayer games, the hypercompetitive psychopaths who love pvp games, the estranged extroverts who love co-op/pve games, and the literal children who enjoy raw stimulation (they're already captured by roblox)

>>529026663Not that anon, but I'd argue that people only think they have a great idea in that case. Because as you attempt to build it, you realize you need to adjust things, some parts of the idea are not feasible, or just not that good in practice.
Like to put it in a simple architecture parallel, I have a great idea for a palace, and I might never be able to build that palace because it is not a one man job.
If I did though, I might realize that towers that high are just too expensive to maintain, or it is ridiculously expensive to keep it warm in the winter, or the air is too humid for the mahogany pieces to be around for a century. I would adjust and only learn these problems as I came across them, even if I already was a competent architect.
>>529027660why is black man the killer
>>529027665To continue on that, this is why ideas are nigh-impossible to steal, because they are like a puzzle. And when it turns out part of that puzzle doesn't work, only the original creator of that idea knows how to change it to stay faithful to the spark of the idea.

It's pointless to try to make a game like kof 2002 third strike of orochi to "appeal" to roleplayers, and adding story elements would ruin the dish.
Combat in rpgs is bad, and to me trying to make a hardcore "jrpg" is like trying to make a game for killers in a genre they don't play.
It doesn't work.
And therefore is better to remove something meant for arcade gamers, than to force roleplayers to do something they don't enjoy.
What I mean is that roleplayers hould have a gathering style of combat, over a hunter killer one.

>>529047150Most games do not use actual peer to peer because it's a headache to sync states and prevent bugs.
What they do instead is set one player as the server (usually the guy with the fastest internet) and have him handle all the server logic.
Back when I did networking we had a limit of about 10kb/second of upload for the server. Every player needs to be synced with every other player by the server (n-1). If you had 4 players (including the server) in the game:
-4 players * 3 states/network tick = 12 states
-10kb / 12 states = ~833 bytes/player
You can see how this would become a disaster as you add more players.
-100 players * 99 states/network tick = 1 byte/player
A vector (position) is about 12 bytes btw.
This is obviously a gross simplification as you don't need to update everything every network tick but there is a reason most "peer to peer" games max out at 24 players.
>>529049097>I'm struggling learning and getting started>I'm not completely retardedTemplates are fine if you're looking to just asset flip, or throw your own assets into those exact gameplay mechanics (no modifications). yea it's really easy to setup and start. this is the part that i was referring to btw and why I quit. i'll revisit this once I have a solid game idea for coop because testing multiplayer takes 2x the time.
like i'm already having to deal with script compilation and now i have to click 3 buttons every time i want to do a playtest.
using chatgpt, the furthest i got to automating some of this was getting the main unity editor to start as host and server but i couldn't get the clients to work.

>>529056316moments like these are when documentation + stackoverflow come in handy
video tutorials immediately become useless when you run into a problem that they don't mention, which is why i only use them to get a general idea of where to start
the only solution is days of effort

>>529014253 What's wrong with being inspired by an IP though? Shouldn't be a fuckin 1:1 remake of course
>>529030973>>529030973>only 2 precision platformer games that made more than a million>one is a spinoff relying on Blazblue IP and its fans (not something an indie can do)>one is CelesteThis should show him that precision platformers are not popular and not worth the effort. But he's delusional and thinks this shows the opposite: that they're under-served and thus a good investment.
He doesn't understand that Celeste sold cause it was a trans game made by a tranny. It was the first of these to do it and got free press from journalists and free buzz online for it. You can't replicate that now, even if you were a tranny making a transcoded game.
