Kris is curled up in their closet. Asriel is out in town for something they didn't bother to remember, which put them alone in the house with Toriel and Asgore. Which wouldn't be bad normally, they love them. They're not afraid to admit anymore that they see them as their parents.

But since they turned ten the two older monsters started arguing more. They did their best to keep it down and away from the two children but they… weren't that great at it. Especially when Asriel was away. Kris was normally attached to Asriel's hip, so they got used to being able to talk freely when Asriel was away.

The worst thing is that their parents argue about them. Toriel is trying to argue that Kris needs to be punished more for their pranks they play on Noelle, and Asgore is trying to say that it's harmless and Noelle doesn't mind them.

It hurts, so much, to hear their parents fighting about them. They screw their eyes shut and curl up more in their closet, doing everything they can to shut it all out.

If only they didn't ruin this family.

Papyrus got his interest to be in the royal guard from watching and being inspired by Undyne. He got his love of spaghetti from being told he was good at making it by Undyne, who was teaching him cooking because she didn't think he was cut out for the guard. Papyrus shares more than a few lines with Mettaton, some of which are direct 1-for-1 identical ("the king will trim a hedge in the shape of my smile!" etc.). Papyrus uses a bunch of MTT brand products and calls Mettaton's show his "favorite". Papyrus was inspired by Mettaton and began to mimic his speech patterns and boundless self-confidence. All of this to say, Papyrus is EXTREMELY impressionable, and large parts of the things we loved about him in Undertale were only possible because of the environment he found himself in.

In Deltarune, Alphys never built that body for Mettaton and as a result he remained in the state he was in back when he lived next to/with Napstablook. He dreams of being a star, but is mostly a recluse. Papyrus is new to town and 1. Does not know anyone there and "needs to make new friends" according to sans and 2. Mettaton the star never happened/hasn't happened yet. The Papyrus of Deltarune may be a shut-in recluse still looking for a source of inspiration to base his life around. Probably why sans is looking for good influences on the guy.

Right, I'm guessing as to why certain things might have happened with incomplete information. I'm not saying any of that is already established, just checking to see if any of it has been explicitly proven false by some line of dialogue or text somewhere that I'm not remembering for whatever reason. I'm offering what I believe to be a plausible explanation, not a definitively proven one, and looking for reasons why it might not be plausible.

I think we went through the character building screen at the beginning because certain baseline conditions are necessary in order to summon a "demon" (the player), and the vessel sequence was a part of that. All "Gaster" (or possibly Kris himself?) had us complete was a "survey program", asking us to customize the basic appearance, attributes, features, and personality of an empty vessel. These customizations, while minor, were just enough to establish its own personality and facilitate the creation of a human soul (us). Once we completed the creation of the survey program, we were free to leave. We were however now in their world, summoned by Kris, with an enticing game to potentially experience. Why not stick around and play the game? This could have been their intention from the start. Lure us in with the survey, then dangle the prospect of a fun game in front of us to keep us around. So the next question is, why do that?

Based on the phone call in ch4 we (the SOUL) appear to be a fundamental necessity for the creation/use of dark fountains. It can't be that only we or other humans can create them, as we saw Susie create one in ch4. It may be that simply being nearby us is what allows it to be possible. Regardless, although we represent an incredible danger and unfathomable power, if they can manage to use our power to achieve whatever goal they have before we can figure out how to escape our "cage", their gamble will have paid off.
