The result is things compound because MMOs require a ton of casuals to pad out the world, interact with it, run content, pull people through content, and so on. Having an MMO for raidloggers and streamers means it's populated during prime time for 1-2 months after a new patch and then just dies out after everyone moved onto the new twitch meta.
>TLDR:they focused on the top eschelon of players and casuals got pissy and took their ball and went home, now no one is there to keep the lights on and fill out on stuff which makes the game feel 100x deader and feel deader faster

If you began engaging with MMOs in the post 2011 paradigm when they became mainstream and the prevailing attitude changed to "objectives I conquer then make friends" from "make friends so that I can conquer the content with them" and the game went to being a video game first, and a social experience second then you literally can not understand why old MMO systems worked are longed for today.
If you began playing MMOs with something like Wrath/Cata WoW or later, FFXIV, you quite literally are a different species of MMO player and in foundational values. I wiped 12 hours a week to a boss for 2 months to finally get it with my raid group intact and we were all screaming excitedly and immediately improv'd another hour of raiding to see what Hyjal looked like. You fuckers leave a PF because one guy fucked an early mechanic up and caused a wipe.
There really is no other way to put it than those of us that grew up on shit like Ultima Online, DAOC, Shadowbane, Early WoW, Aion, even fucking RuneScape and Maplestory are just a very different breed of MMO player, and we aren't the same because "You also play something classified as an MMO."
This game is just Second Life/IMVU called an MMO because "well, technically, it's massive, multiplayer, and online!" Okay fuckers, when Richard Garriot COINED THE PHRASE you're divorcing of any and all context there were specific bells and whistles associated with that experience that are not even a thought in the genre today.

A lot of what makes an adventure "fun" are situations that people in the west would consider "problematic." You can't actually have a fun story with mass appeal where your character is unequivocally nontoxic.
Think of it in an analogy: People watch Indiana Jones to see him taking artifacts from the remnants of ancient cultures, with an inherent sense of superiority of the adventurer understood. Meanwhile, the recent Tomb Raider cartoon taking the socially-correct stance that artifacts shouldn't be taken and instead given back (at cross-purposes with its concept) flopped. People say they want one thing with their heads, but the things which they truly appreciate with their wallets and which keep them coming back are different.
Yoshi-P was catching heat for the sort of traditional adventure people wanted all the way back in SB with how, in the words of the antis, Hien goes to the Azim Steppe and culturally appropriates Xaela traditions of kingship in order to enslave them into service as his own army, as well as how Lyse acts as a white savior figure to the Ala Mhigans who insists she knows the solution to their problems better than they do.
This was mitigated in ShB and EW by the cultures used as inspiration for areas there not being ones people on Bluesky harp on about, as well as a stronger focus on YOU, the protagonist, and your personal story. Thus they used that narrative and its conclusion to keep the arc strong. However, the key factor in this era was the centering of conflict, and how some are inevitable because of differing subjective worldviews โ Emet-Selch and Elidibus both accept you as having the right to defeat them. Then you get DT and its "muh peace" narrative, which couples both a boring companion character with no sense of adventure in a setting ripe for it with the backgrounding of the conflict angle that had made their last two expansions strong.
