Sonic definitely does have a canon. The problem is that everyone grew up with different perceptions of Sonic through a lot of supplementary material. I've been saying that the problem with Silver for the longest time is that he was introduced as a rival instead of a new friend.

Half the reason Trunks was so cool was that he immediately cemented himself as Goku's new ally after kicking Frieza's ass and he had good chemistry with the rest of the DBZ cast. They never gave Silver either of these things and he suffers for it.
