repost from the killed thread: A bit of a vanity thing for me, making the DRM-free installer oldschool. Makes a boomer like me feel more like the game is actually "real".
Also if any of you anons haven't been using it, their Butler tool makes updating your games on itch.io a breeze compared to manually uploading new files through the web interface. It can even be used for making patch executables outside of itch too. It's neat.
A C&C or Emperor BfD-style installer would be fucking kino but for now I just want it to play some keygen jingle likely horbro's track
And to answer the question of the "when 30% discount" anon: I don't plan these things ahead so no idea but if you have the taste for it, I recommend grabbing one of the bundles, those will cumulatively add up to between - 23% to -37%, depending on the one you choose.

the key to making a big game is to find a balance between individual passion and market viability
jobbydevs like marnix struggle because their games are theoretically viable based on market research but lack the passion to be unique experiences
they create generic games that they have no desire to aggressively promote and thus receive mediocre results
on the other hand you have freaks like fygoon who make hyperpassionate extremely niche works of art that, unfortunately, only appeal to themselves and quite literally nobody else
i'd say somebody like branno does a good job of mixing unique ideas rooted in passion and market data for viable products, healed to death was unique but still enjoyable - encroaching upon the territory of being a bit *too* unique for its own good
the luckiest devs are slop consumer normies who somehow managed to learn how to make games
they have the passion for shit that sells

No dev alert, I'm having fun making sprites just because I can. This concept, like many others I've had, hit me hard and fast all at once this morning. Two inspirations - the Greek myth of Damocles and Donkey Kong 3 (not DKC, the arcade one).
Dion has found himself under the curse of the hanging sword, no thanks to his friend turned traitor, Damon, who gave Dion's name to a gypsy that he angered. Now Dion must platform and solve puzzles by blowing bubbles to either bounce on or to capture enemies or objects to move them. If time runs out, the sword will fall and kill Dion, no matter where he tries to hide. He must hurry to track down Damon and reverse the curse, swearing to Damon "It's either ME or YOU!"
Which is what I'd like to call this game. "Me or You". 800 percent zoom.

I'm going to make an RTS where you control a captain and the squad is the units who move as a flock. Similar to Pikmin, you'll have multiple units following your movement.
You fire your weapon like it's a TPS, except I'll have a really wide rectangular reticle that the player units autoaim with.
I want it to feel like you're in hands on control of a squad or 20ish soldiers firing their guns. You'll try to take streets and manage the health of the units. In essence, the soldiers in your command are the "HQ" and you move across the map capturing objectives and switching tactics in real time.
A man dying in your platoon or whatever directly weakens your effectiveness.

Help me decide between these two ideas I have for a puzzle:
Idea 1:

The entire library is a maze that is made up of hexagon shaped rooms (the library is referred to as The Hive). I don't want it to be a simple "walk around the maze" part so I'm adding some sort of small puzzle throughout.
Or should I just do both ideas? One is already implemented, the other is just plugging events and rotating things.
There is one easy-ish puzzle near the end, it's a "put the objects in the right spot" puzzle, which opens a portal to the Council Room of the library, which then leads to the next area. But I think it'd be a good idea to have a few puzzles leading up to that point so players know that this area is a maze/puzzle and not just another area (since many areas in the game are purely exploration/walking)

Good news: I added some extremely good QoL that would be heavily liked.
Bad news: I had to insert some code in the 1500+ functions and I have to review each one to make sure if it's needed or not. Also it's a little buggy when activating/deactivating it for some reason. But it works.

i think you cannot make a good game before you truly honest about how good your competition is. it's easy to delude yourself with "i just did something". you need to face how good other dev studios are, that they have more budget, talent etc. - you need to truly see it from a gamers perspective too. e.g. if you make a survival sandbox, people will compare you to valheim, the forest, medieval dynasty etc. etc.
all games with tons of content, good graphics etc.
and then when you realized all of that, you need to avoid competition, because you will not be able to compete with them. you have to do something different from the competition.
if you try to become better than them, it basically means you'll have to do twice the work they did.
first, the work just to get to their level, and second, the work to outcompete them and also convincing customers that it's worth buying "old game but with a bit more features".
