categories on left are: front, pace, late, end
Look at your horse girl's strong categories (A, maybe B). These dictate what she wants to do without a bunch of breeding changes. As in what length of races she wants to run and what position(s) she wants to take.

And then the important part, actually learn what length of races are in her GOALs. Tougher girls to train have GOAL races in their URA that don't always match their strong points, or are varied enough that you can't just spam one stat build and win everything. Not all URAs are created equal, some girls are very hard to win URA with when working with day 1/2 resources. It gets easier as strong breed stock gets out into the world and you raise your support card levels.

You can win with the starter umas. Go fine motion, the 2 speed SRs, Manhattan, and the strongest R stamina you have. Borrow an SSR speed. Only train Speed, Stamina, and Wit with a heavier focus on Speed. Also focus on raising as many friendships up as possible, as long as you can make it through the early game friendship maxxing will give you all the stats you need to brute force your way through. Don't be afraid to gamble on 20+% failure rates, you can always do another career and failures aren't the end of the world.
