unironically the season model was inevitable and was in force de-facto long before it was named as such.

Like, since TBC. Raids, Patches, Zones and PvP seasons have come out together and represent discrete changes to endgame gameplay.

Obviously its become more formal and structured over time but its always been there. It was just reffered to only as patches before.
