Well for me it has been performance, I'm running a 1660 super with a ryzen3600 and 16 gigs of ram and before the game would just crash often because of ram issues(I assume), it would slow down a lot on the campaign map and it would constantly complain about a lack of ram. If you don't do this, you will lose. Plain and simple.

Autoresolve isn't even really a factor, in fact sometimes it'll let you win when you shouldn't. It doesn't factor in stuff like Fear effects, healing caps and healing abilities, it doesn't factor ranged units accurately, Vampires for example get shafted in Autoresolve when they're a nightmare to deal with in battle because their lords are so strong and their units will break yours with the leadership debuff from fear and the fact they can't rout.
To beat them at all you kinda have to do what you call cheating, if you don't corner camp and abuse magic to kill half the army with a caster they'll just chew through you like its nothing, and you literally do not have enough units in a 20 stack to keep them from flanking you unless you use terrain to force them into a choke point. Failing that, corner camping is your only option to win the fight. Unless you're fighting Vlad and Isabella in which case you're fucked unless you have some BEEFY lords/heroes to knock them down.

Your main spells are:
Ice Maiden's Kiss (for low armor enemies)
Ice Sheet (to slow approaching enemies)
Death Frost (to kill single entities and monsters) Heart of Winter (to kill high tier infantry and general blobs of all sorts.)

Frost Blades and Crystal Sanctuary are highly situational at best, and possibly just a waste of WoM. Frost Blades is really only good for the magical attack, which will eventually become completely redundant with Katarin once you get her Frost Guard doomstack. Crystal Sanctuary is good to throw on men who are going against particularly scary units to help them hold the line for just a bit longer. Keep in mind that you could just delete that unit with Heart of Winter if the spell is up.

Where a lot of people trip up is in thinking that Heart of Winter is a vortex spell. It isn't. It's a direct damage spell, similar to Flock of Doom. You can have a Heart of Winter on your own troops and it won't damage them. For this reason alone, Heart of Winter might be one of the best spells in the game. Just remember to overcast it, the overcast version does so much more damage, it is absolutely worth it.
