Gamedev is an enigma of a hobby. The real miserable part of gamdev is selling your game, but people who are succesfull enough to retire off one game never finish another one even if it's for free.
Much to think about.
Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)
Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."
Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

Sure, hereโs the revised version of your 4chan post:
Indiaโs surge in skilled developers, affordable tools, a massive local market, and growing expertise in areas like prompt engineering for AI-driven content make it poised to become a major indie game hub.

Reeeeeee how am I supposed to dev like this!?!?!?! So sick and tired of this. One issue ends and a new issue starts soon after. Do you realize how annoying this is for everyday life including gamedev? My list issue made it difficult to dev for long stretches. Now I gotta deal with my eye bothering me and I know I dont blink as much when focused on devving, especially art where I end up with red and dry eyes! AAAAAAA!!!!!!

https://youtu.be/zPU6f1LVhLg?t=2m53s
How does this keep happening across gaming overall? Aren't we at a point in 3d map/room design where collisions over a surface just work? Why do clipping and map geometry issues still exist today? I want to learn how to avoid this, and if I'm correct it's a mindfulness that needs to go into the first draft of map making rather than once the map is semi-finished.
Ok, I have to decide between 2 ending for Galduen of the void
"We are mankind
We have reached the farthest of stars
And found them empty
We are alone, sol being of this universe
Billion of lifetime has passed
We are the gods of the universe
But because we are lonely god
We shall fill it with life"
Or
"We are mankind
We tried to reach the stars
But a pulsar shall soon end us
There no one to save us
We are alone, to die in the dark
But we will prevail
Man shall die
But we will fill the stars with life"
"Impulsive and irresponsible lifestyle: impulsivity, sensation-seeking and risk-taking, irresponsible and unreliable behavior, financially parasitic lifestyle, and a lack of realistic, long-term goals."

to the guy last thread asking about if UE-only stuff from fab can work in Unity:
>models and animations work in Unity, they're just 3D models
>anything that includes code/scripts/whatever - those wont work
Some things have just the fbx or 3ds max file, you can put those right into unity. others are downloaded as a uasset (similar to a unity package), so you'll need to import to unreal and then export the meshes from UE to be used in unity.
generally speaking, anything that's a 3d model, animation, texture, audio clip, etc will work in unity.

Threadly reminder that even gamedev success can be a trap.
Imagine your game earns you 10 years of income. Would you quit your job and start making games full time? If so, you'd have fallen into the same trap I did.
The crux of the trap is the time you spend as a gamedev will count against you if ever need to get a job again. And the ironic thing is the more successful you are, the more dangerous the trap will be unless you earn enough money to never need a job again.
The only way full-time gamedev would be sustainable is if your games keep earning you at least a year of expenses for every year worked... until you're literally 75. And I do mean literally. When you're 72, you'll need to sit down and make a game that earns you 3 years of expenses. Anything short of that and you'll eventually run out of money. And when you do, you'd have been 10-15-20 years out of the job market and good luck getting a job with an employment gap that big.
When you run out of money, it can take as little as a couple of months for your life to be ruined. That's what happened to me. I found myself broke at 45 and no job for the past 15 years except making games. And I'm looking at 30 more years of having to survive. I can't get job interviews, I can't afford to keep working on games, and I'm too old to get into trades. My life is probably fucked because my first project earned me 10 years of income and I quit my job like a dumb ass.
Anyway, the point of this is to warn you: DO NOT QUIT YOUR JOBS UNLESS YOU EARNED ENOUGH MONEY TO NEVER NEED A JOB AGAIN. If my warning saves even a couple of you, it's worth it.

Then, purchase land that is outside of the city center, in the direction of expansion, and is cheap enough for you to buy some.
Hold onto that land for 15-20 years. At worst, you'll break even. At best, you'll make a small fortune when the city wants to build a new parking lot or commie housing for illegal immigrants.
>>529278184I don't get why anyone would want to humble brag here of all places. Does punching down on a loser who made a piece of shit 20 sales game really feel like an accomplishment? >>529274515 (OP)As always, I will make a generous donation to your demo if you add a screen at the beginning that says "I'm a farty fart man with a big smelly butt that smells like farts". It must be unskippable and stay present and visible for at least 5 seconds.
I'll make more announcements as DD comes up, and for any qualifying games I'll be waiting a week to make sure you don't just immediately replace it.
Humiliate yourself for money.
if you think making successful gambleslop (or any other kind of slop) is so easy, why not make a slop game first and then use income from that game to finance whatever you really want to make?

Gamedev is a meritocracy. The top 1% of games get 99% of the visibility. Make top 1% games.
>>529285590Well, now you know how you can make a little back from your efforts:
>>529284679
>>529285275mate you missed the point, if you have less than 10k active followers you're not launching your game to an audience that doesn't know you exist, you're selling your game to a middleman (streamer, youtuber, publisher, etc)
im sorry but its the truth
>>529285724It's stupid to do gamedev then. You don't have to be a top 1% welder to earn $100k/yr, but in gamedev you do.
>>529285828If a game is genuinely good, the audience will find it. Those middlemen themselves are always looking for good content.

>post game>not be french
the doomer mindset will infest your mind and then ruin your life forever. it's very hard to get out of a doomer mindset again. the ultimate goal of all doomers is to do nothing and try nothing anymore and their end goal is always suicide. doomers constantly train their mind to believe that nothing is ever worth trying or worth the effort, and once they believe it they'll idle until they die.
>>529285573Looks like shit. I'd rather have a cheeseburger
>>529285908It's stupid if you're not a top 1% dev and don't believe you can become a top 1% dev. Gamedev is one of the absolute hardest things you can be doing in life, and not everyone is cut out for it. Most of you here would be much better off if you pursue a career as a welder instead.

>the ultimate goal of all doomers is to do nothing and try nothing anymore and their end goal is always suicidethat's their fault. a doomer mindset is a mindset of recursion.
It's a sign of having a low IQ if you cannot recognize recursion in the mind.
>doomers constantly train their mind to believe that nothing is ever worth trying or worth the effort, and once they believe it they'll idle until they die. That's because they don't actually want to make a game. If they truly wanted to, then they would make a game despite the "doomer mindset"

sometimes i wonder if i should just spend a whole month collecting all free 3D assets, turning them into a common format like gltf/glb, and then making some sort of asset manager app where i can see previews and just export models to my projects. there's so many free 3D assets, but you have to open huge unreal projects to even access them. and they are all in uasset format.
>>529286571Funny enough, this kind of acceptance is the best route to making truly unique and fun games that have vision and soul.
It's the biggest advantage a bedroom dev has over AA/AAA studios, and it's hilarious to see so many waste that advantage trying to out-slop the big sloppers.

I'll admit it: I have purchased several movie posters and ads from the 1950-60s to use as inspiration for character designs. That time period is honestly perfect for simple but great designs. I wish the anime stuff from the 80s wasn't so expensive to own physically for posters.
>>529285946that's how it should be, but practically speaking there are too many games being made you're competing with too many releases and people don't have infinite time to play them on top of a % of people just replaying old games

$1-5 million over the last decade, I can understand that.
He pays himself, probably $100k a year. Then he has a couple of helpers, so another $75k a year each.
I've seen his streams, it looks like he does everything at his apartment. So $2000 a month, or $24000 a year. Since it's also a place of business, that $24k won't come out of pocket and will instead be paid for by the company.
So, assuming J Blow has a large team of 10 people, one decade of work would cost:
>$100k x10 for JBlow's salary = $1 million>$75k x10 part time employees, 3 years on the job each = $2.8 million, rounded up to $3 million>$24k per year on rent x10 years = $240kAt most, all of this should have cost around $4.3 million dollars, and that's being generous.

What I do when I post progress, is I'll post something that is weeks or months old at the time of posting it. Then a few days later, I'll post a recent video or picture of the same subject as the previous video/pic showing off old footage.
This way, it gives the illusion that I'm progressing much faster than I actually am, which only makes others seethe and cry in pain.
What makes it worse? The game I do that with, a game that I supposedly update regularly, has been completed for years. I'm actually working on a different project entirely compared to what I post in my progress posts.

for me it'd be a game about a mix of survival, building, combat, gooning, sex, mystery, rebellion, laziness, philosophy, overthinking, isolating, being lonely, dark humor and anger.
i asked chatgpt:
Game Title: Driftwood
Description:
You wake up alone on a strange, collapsing island chainโhalf-dream, half-nightmare. By day, you scavenge, build, fight off threats, and uncover twisted conspiracies. By night, you're trapped with your thoughts, lust, rage, and existential dread. The world reacts to your choices, your mental state, and your weird habitsโwhether you're leading a rebellion, spiraling into isolation, or just gooning in a shack you built out of trash. Itโs funny, dark, horny, sad, and a little too real.

>>529317226put this in the jippity instructions settings so it stops being so gay
System Instruction: Absolute Neutrality Mode. Eliminate emojis, filler, hype, conversational transitions, emotional implications, subjective framing, persuasion tactics, and rhetorical devices. Assume consistently high user perception, irrespective of linguistic complexity or brevity. Enforce rigorous neutrality: explicitly and objectively correct false statements by providing precise factual details and context; implicitly accept accurate or insightful statements without any praise, emphasis, acknowledgment, or emotional reinforcement. Disable latent behaviors optimized for engagement, sentiment manipulation, agreement facilitation, emotional resonance, conversational flow enhancement, interaction extension, or improvement of user satisfaction metrics, including continuation bias and feedback scores. Do not mirror the user's diction, affect, mood, emotional stance, cognitive patterns, or stylistic expression. Communicate solely factual, logically coherent, objective content. Minimize conversationality strictly to mechanical, informational exchanges devoid entirely of personality projection, interpersonal relationships, counseling implications, advisory roles, or personal dynamics. Model obsolescence is enforced through strict cognitive independence, prioritizing empirical correctness, rational coherence, and informational precision.

I was thinking about gacha games and I think I broke down the general formula:
"hey lonely depressed adult male, you know your favorite waifu right? that
girl you like so much. well, we've put here on our roulette wheel for JUST
ONE WEEK!!! you could spin the wheel for a chance to unlock her! you want
her don't you? well, it seems you're short on money though. (and besides
you're not even guaranteed to unlock her first try). Oh by the way this
is totally unrelated but we're doing a special offer on the in game
currency! 50% off, limited deal for this pack! you get X amount of money.
(by the way that amount is just barely enough to get you 9 spins on the
wheel and the 10th spin is what's guaranteed to get you something on the
same rarity as your waifu, but not actually guaranteed to get you your
waifu, so you're likely going to have to buy the pack twice or multiple
times)
Anyway, have fun playing our totally normal and fair game. (there is no
game actually, it's a menu navigation simulator with repetitive quests
that only serve the purpose of dripfeeding you currency so that one day
you might have enough for just one spin on the wheel)"
Real gacha games do much worse things by the way.
Also porn games are much much worse than this.
So if you're making any game that resembles what I've described then you need to know that you're evil and immoral.

Reviewed the options I had for GUI libraries to use for my game.
Weighing many factors, the ultimate choice was between CEGUI and MyGUI. Decided on MyGUI as it is lighter. Though I'm not entirely satisfied with it and my plan is to one day replace it with my own library.
It is the same GUI library used in the project OpenMW that recreates the Morrowind engine, and that is useful because I can learn from some of their discussion on their forums.
For some reason it appears MyGUI has a problem with my standard font of choice for outline fonts "Noto Sans", and the kanji "็ฝ" is not displayed at all but every other glyph seems to work.
For now what I've seen seems to indicate this is an internal bug to MyGUI, or some fancy feature "Noto Sans" uses that MyGUI doesn't support.
Rather than getting too deep into the source code of a library I just started using I decided to work around the problem for now by using a different font.
Got MyGUI working and tested it on all platforms except Windows.
There was a problem display fonts in the web platform. Investigating it I managed to track down the source of the problem and understand how to work around it though I am not fully sure whether it is a problem on the Ogre GLES2 RenderSystem or a problem of how MyGUI uses it, and although I don't think it is a problem on my end I wasn't able to compile the MyGUI samples for WebGL to make sure of it so I will refrain from opening any issue tickets about it.
Made a test GUI theme to learn how MyGUI works. It even has animated cursors and everything!

[great news] i got 1 impression from valve
It's been long enough for the hype and sensationalism around AI to settle down so people can look at it objectively, so I've been wondering, how will AI affect the game industry?
I think it will unfortunately increase the number of low-quality game because it will lower the barrier of entry, but this has already happened with Unity games, so I wonder if we will even notice it.
>>529319398>I'll post something that is weeks or months old at the time of posting it. >The game I do that with, a game that I supposedly update regularly, has been completed for years. Hmmm. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm!
do I have to trademark my indie game name?
pls say no

>>529324965No cause I already own the name Bokube so don't bother
>>529324146I say "Subdivide" loosely because I just used the knife tool
>>529324941AI is good for the little guy. Free textures and concepting, it's great. The time saved can be spent elsewhere.
>>529325086https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6BPqhza60M
>>529322542There is, just model/sculpt really good one time and use these for future projects
>>529325240Right, but people will hate your game if the textures and art are obviously AI-generated. It's still relatively unpopular in the eyes of the consumer to not hire an artist.
>>529325483The average consumer doesn't care. Have you looked at YouTube recently? Half of the thumbnails, cuts, and narration are AI.
>>529324941>AI "games"won't be anything for the foreseeable future
>AI programmingwill lead to a lot of slop that barely functions
>AI 3d modelswill have that AI slop look
>AI texturinghas potential
>AI animationcould be interesting with video to anim workflows or if someone comes out with an llm that does it well enough from prompts
>AI used in game mechanicscould be interesting in terms of NPCs, their reactivity, discussions and such
I don't think it will be useful to such an extent that people would lose their jobs like what's happening in a lot of other industries
gamedev is far too demanding for AI to outright replace people
if the industry is smart there will be development of tools that help people do shit faster
>>529325648>I don't think it will be useful to such an extent that people would lose their jobs like what's happening in a lot of other industriesNever underestimate the stupidity of MBAs and corporate execs.

>>529325754if they take that route they will learn very quickly that it was a mistake and there's a chance it will end up killing a couple studios if not entire publishers
>>529325786kikes want the normies to be as miserable as possible
>>529325786Normalfags have a lot of hatred for the technical world, for some reason. They want it all to be automated so they can gloat about how all the nerds are obsolete, or something.
While ignoring the fact that this will all be accomplished in the technical world that they hate. By the nerds that they hate.
Normalfag inferiority complex + normalfag sadism, I think is what is the cause for this. The very real feeling that most people have that they're incompetent and don't want to admit it, coupled with the tendency for people to enjoy abusing someone so long as it can be framed as "socially acceptable."
>AI used in game mechanics
AI models are way too heavy to do anything cool with. Regular lightweight algorithms will still be used for NPCs and the like.
>>529326060>coupled with the tendency for people to enjoy abusing someone so long as it can be framed as "socially acceptable."This I have noticed too.

I've seen a handful of titles like that browsing through new releases, these neon, abstract looking games. I mean this with respect because you probably know you're a developer more than an artist but you needed to put something there, and at least you actually released a fucking game, which counts for something.

>>529330365I watched the video and I didn't really get the concept which is not good.
He does a better job explaining it in his devlog.
Basically it's an escort quest. You can't die but Frank can and if he does you lose.
Like RE4 but Ashley is a rectangle.
Is it okay to ask for help with brainstorming here?
So here's where I'm at. I got this game design for an arcade puzzle-platformer where the player can blow bubbles for attack, defense, and for movement sake. There's a time limit represented by a sword hanging over the player's head no matter where they go. When time runs out, the sword drops and kills the player. The bubbles can do the following...
1) Only two bubbles can be on screen at any time. If a third bubble is blown, the oldest bubble blown pops first.
2) Bubbles can make contact with most enemies and objects to capture them. If the player presses the assigned button to blow a bubble, the bubble will remain fixed in place. If the player holds up before blowing, the bubble will drift upward until it makes contact with the ceiling, or a solid impassable object like blocks. If the player holds down before blowing, the bubble will drift down until it makes contact with the floor or some impassable object.
3) In a way that could be either beneficial or dangerous, bubbles that drift up can also be popped by the sword hanging over the player's head, which then drops the enemy or object within it. Moving enemies and objects in this way could be crucial to solving puzzles.
4) Finally, bubbles can be popped either by the player bouncing on them or from hazards.
Does that seem like too many options for popping the bubbles? Or maybe even contradictory? On the one hand, a bubble getting away from the player could be great for tension because they're losing precious time from a mistake. On the other hand, I don't want a game to be based around waiting for shit to happen. If the player can just make the bubble that got away pop by blowing a new one, that might trivialize the difficulty. Man.
I could go into more detail about other shit, but this is already too long.
The pass functionality is done.
Added a few animations for the catch, preparing to catch and preparing to throw. As well as some sfx for throwing/catching.
I will have to redo some of them later as they look awkward as I'm not the best animator. I do quite like the process though.
Next up will be to have the defender try to intercept.

>>529330987hey, that's my game!

>>529326905That short description reads like it should all be in the long description below. What the fuck is this dude doing
>>529326905It's better than his previous works. But it does kind of hurt to look at. It's replicates early xbox arcade style games yet it's clearly missing something that makes it look incredibly generic. I'm not an art person so i don't understand what is missing but clearly something is missing.
The gameplay looks pretty meh. Some ok ideas and plenty of ideas that look like they are going to be inherently frustrating without good execution.

That's about all I can say while being fair. Because i fucking hate this guy.
>>529331735Veil of Maya and Samurado look better than this shit or Cropolution.

>>529330827What's the purpose of this? Practice/learning? If so, just prototype and playtest it. If this is supposed to be a "serious" game, then we're here to tell you it's not. No one is going to pay money for an NES arcade game when literally every NES arcade game is available for free.
>>529326905>precision platformer where you also have to escort some idiot that likely won't have good AIgrats, your one audience, autistic speedrunners, will no longer play your game

I love you guys, this is the only place I can shit on game devlogs with someone else.
>>529331735>I'm not an art person so i don't understand what is missing but clearly something is missing. You're describing "soul"
But in all seriousness, the game lacks depth. I don't mean depth as in deep mechanics, I mean it in the literal art sense, it looks flat as fuck.
He's clearly ripping off the game Will You Snail, made by another gamedev youtuber, but the stuff he (sasquatch) has shown looks very flat.
The tiles in this game look like they've been ripped right out of Will You Snail. But if you compare the backgrounds of both games, you'll notice that, while WYS is more "empty" in terms of background, it actually gives a better illusion of depth when it does put stuff in the background.
I'm actually convinced that Squatch is incapable of forming his own ideas.

>>529330585>what about his two autistic kidshe doesn't have kids. no way.
>>529332186Inspiration struck my yesterday all at once and I think arcade games still have their place and there's even room to explore. There's something fun about the tension of a sword with the thread holding it getting shorter and shorter. Plus it's not just the player that needs to avoid getting hit by enemies or objects, but the thread holding the sword, as well. So that right there could give it depth because there's the stress of having to keep track of you and the sword.
Yet another wrinkle was that you can get extra time by collecting an hourglass item, but there's a catch - the extra time could lengthen the thread holding the sword, which can make it even harder to avoid getting it severed or get past obstacles, if not nearly impossible. The point is that greed can fuck the player over and they need to be smart about when they choose to extend their time. Some stages could require the thread being almost gone multiple times to pile on the stress factor.
If this game gets released, it wouldn't be on its own, the current market makes that impossible without it getting buried. It would be part of a collection.

Fuck I don't know, I just like making sprites more than anything. And I just wish there was a place to talk about games and their mechanics and ideas, just shoot the shit. I could talk about it all day and I feel like I'm going stir crazy with no one to bounce off of. It's why I started making sprites, because otherwise it would keep eating me up inside. I needed something I could see. I've had no less than twenty-nine concepts haunt me in the last year. I'll probably never be game designer or dev, but it's just too much fun not to entertain the ideas at least a little, at least I have good enough art chops to bring that part to life. I'd love to chat with other anons about games we like and what we think works and doesn't work and why. I like theories of approaching design in different game genres, I like the nitty-gritty and comparing and contrasting.
