They weren't sentient until their fountains were created, but how they were used as objects influence their personalities and become memories as a sort of last-Thursdayism. After a fountain is created, being taken to the light world and becoming an object again is a sort of suspended animation.

Anyone playing ch3 blind won't have any idea the secret boss is tied to the S rank rooms until AT LEAST after the first round, which is when you learn the requirements to S-rank and the cost for buying it in the first place.
There's no prior hint or NPC pushing you to get S rank, or anything telling you that if you don't get it you can buy it for 1.5k points.
With ch 1,2 and 4 you KNOW what you're supposed to do to unlock the secret boss BEFORE you hit a point where you can't backtrack. It shouldn't piss people off that they did everything they thought they were supposed to do, only to find out after-the-fact that they missed a thing they weren't told about and have to do an entire section all over again.

Chapter 5 will have a dark world in Dess's room. At the end of chapter 4 you can check the shelter and Susie will explicitly tell you that you two should take another stab at that code tomorrow. She's going to sneak off from the festival with Noelle to go to her house again (or go find Noelle since Carol wouldn't let her go). Carol catches you snooping around and trying to take the guitar, Susie opens a dark world right there in the middle of Dess's room.
This may not be the only dark world we see, but it will be one of them. Asgore could still be relevant there because he does housework at Noelle's home. Alternatives are the very-obvious Flower King shop, and possibly the festival grounds itself.
