Just got done playing through all of the Alan Wake games in under a week. These games scratched every single possible itch more me and I was engaged with the the entire time, literally a perfect franchise.
>Fair enough, I still hold that it was a choice made for the better though
It's a little disappointing there wasn't a proper climatic showdown, but on the other hand, it's cathartic for a corporation to go down because the government decided to bother.
>we know he moved around from company to company and taking whatever he could so them fading into the background is somewhat expected.
Fair enough.
>I donโt think he would see breaking out the G-virus or T-virus as conductive to his goals given all his focus on Uroboros.
Sure, but it makes him gathering all of those viruses pointless.
>I got the impression the Connections were that too, that is, they have people in high places funding and supporting them
IIRC Connections only really had connections with Miranda (She gave them fungus to try to recreate her daughter), and HCF, don't remember anything about higher up people funding them.
Also it's a little weird that RE8 decided to have Spencer and Miranda be personally connected, Brandon Bailey is one of Umbrella's founders, and the game doesn't comment about a connection between Bailey and Miranda.
>Thus far anyway. I donโt think anyone predicted they were going to pay homage to an Outbreak character with RE9 so I wouldnโt say itโs off the table
Fair enough. I was certainly baffled when that trailer mentioned "Ashcroft". While RE did make a few references to Outbreak (Including Alyssa herself writing an article about kidnappings during RE7), I certainly wasn't expecting that.
>Iโm just going to assume they liked the voice actor and didnโt intend to imply it was literally Wesker still around, lol
I dunno about that, he speaks like Wesker (DC Douglas can change his voice well enough), the game notes that the recreation of RE4's events were done like he was involved with it, and other characters tried to find his identity only to get killed off for trying. The hints that he was Wesker, or something about his identity is major, were there.

Almost finished a rerun of SysShock 2 remaster. I'm at the Many level rn and feeling kind of bored. Normal difficulty seems to break for me on Hydroponics, when you find both rapier and laspistol. It's like there are so many cyber modules it's hard not to unlock everything and become flushed with resources. Although Engineering still feels tricky. I saw 2 rebalance mods on the game forums: Rebalanced Skills and Disciplines and Secmod. I'd like to try the one which rewires the game the most but it's more about being able to boot it on the remaster I guess.
tl;dr: what mod will make gameplay the most refreshed?
>>529359743I've been on the fence about finally playing Alan Wake and thanks to your post I will make it a priority this Halloween
Thanks, bro
I'll dump my Evil Within Clips here
>>529333032 (OP)just started the remake. how do i stop being a huge pussy? this game has a jumpscare per 30 seconds and it's stressing me the fuck out. going into every room twitching like the old doom meme webms and i feel like i need to take a smoke break with some deep exhales after every objective. must stress that the actual combat is super easy and i haven't even come close to dying, but i'm jolting out of my fucking chair every 30 seconds and can't deal.
>>529397687Maybe intentionally get hit a few times for you to see what actually happens if you get hit? Not dying while getting hit (Obviously while you have a few med packs) can tone down the threat of necromorphs since you'll know you can survive the attacks, I guess...
>>529383490Is this a mod?
>>529413298No it's vanilla, they added a first person mode, but getting it to work properly with no mouse smoothing, proper fov, sensitivity, etc requires you to own both the steam version and at the very least have the game pass trial version.
>>529408143i think i might just be susceptible to jump scares. once combat starts i'm foaming at the mouth and chasing them down and stomping the shit out of them like i'm playing doom. but the dread before combat starts gets me.
>>529426601thanks for sharing, anon. what difficulty were you playing? and did you have a legit version of the fighting chance pack or did you get it from a keyselling site like a dirty filthy person like me
>>529428163I couldn't play on the hardest because it wasn't unlocked yet (outside of the 1 hit mode), I bought The Evil Within 1 around when it first came out but didn't like it much on release, but I came back around once I got my new PC because my old PC couldn't run anything off the microsoft store, and that had the gamepass version and thus the version required to sync up with the steam version to have all the new content.
I did try The Evil Within 2 a bit but kinda got distracted playing some other games so I am taking a bit of a break from it. Bought The Evil Within 2 back when steam made it very easy to get games extremely cheap from Argentina.
>>529413842Damn. I thought they only did that for TEW2. Good to know. From what I can tell it was janky as shit too though and the game still forced you back into third person at times.
>me when I don't get my tendies
Is Story mode the ideal way to play Voices of the Void or is it half-baked atm? It's been two in-game weeks and very little has happened, at least anything I've actually noticed. Aside from the thing that happens when low sleep, all that's happened is a spam of blank emails and a pair of eyes noclipping through the windows to knock me over, maybe a handful of Can't Save moments which amounted to nothing I noticed
Also still haven't quite figured out what the ideal sustainable food source is or how I'm supposed to lug stuff from other locations when inventory fills up quick and much of stuff is too big to stow away. Figured out cooking but it's a pain when the drives+hashes run takes so much of the day.

>>529441670>>529487705Ghostwire wasn't a bad game: It had some neat ideas, cool milieus and parkouring around central Tokyo looking for secret pickups was fun. I'm glad I gave it a playthrough... but at the same I'm really not sure I can say it was a good game?
>>529496629ya got that image with a few more pixels?
Yeah i'm not sure how I feel about The Evil Within 2, it just feels jankier, third person or first person, it's not bad but something about The Evil Within 1 even in first person felt way smoother.
There are good aspects to it don't get me wrong, and I am enjoying my time with it, and I have a FEELING long term i'll enjoy it more than 1 but i'm not sure, i'll post some clips from it as I play it more.
>>529501331EW1 was one of the, not WORST, but least fun and most predictable games I've ever played, pure shite.
The sequel was still a very janky survival horror but at least it brought some refreshing changes to the formula: The semi-open world areas and stealth mechanics actually made you feel like a survivor for the first part of the game and combat/weapons also felt better than its predecessor. Story was still utter bargain bin trite but at least EW2 was a fun-ish 3+/5 game, which was more than EW1 could've ever hoped for.

Tried Backrooms Extractions with a friend, unfortunately like most Backrooms slop games, despite this one being one of the better ones, it delves into the bullshit many of them do which is running around a map finding useless shit to proceed to the next level rather than being what I assumed to be a spin on Lethal Company but set in a Backrooms universe.
Some of the AI and monsters in this game genuinely were a lot better than many of the other backrooms games, and visually it genuinely looks great, but I wish we got at least one fucking backrooms game that at properly followed literally any of the canons and not some puzzle slop.

God it'd be funny if a part of the RE5 Remake was the Plagas Hive Mind tricking Tricell into making a population that is born as Plagas Hosts.

I'm Really Afraid I'm not going to like Silent Hill f. It Looks so good but that Japanese flesh light girl is holding a metal pipe.
I played Silent Hill 2 Remake as my first Silent Hill game and was deeply disappointed. Specifically the melee combat stole all the tension and fear from the monsters. I stopped playing 2 hours in.
On the other hand, I'm in love with Re4 remake, despite being less spooky and tense compared to the Re2 Remake. I think the ranged combat helps maintain the tension and fear of whatever monster's in your way.
A key point of my logic here is that Leon needs a gun, suggesting you need extreme means and power to kill the creature, implying a more dangerous creature. Whereas James Sunderland Can with his own hands manhandle a shark guillotine creature and fuck it.
Also This is not a claim that resident evil is scarier than silent hill. Just my two cents, I know from walkthroughs Silent Hill 2 Remake gets spooky but i couldn't get through the beginning of the game.
>>529610721How can you feel any tension in a game with manual aiming? I'm having way too much fun to get spooked, either by popping headshots or legshots
>>529612530The Zombies move and you can miss as they get closer. Tight spaces and multiple headshots needed, most people would miss a few times. Not everyone is MLG pro.
>>529612956>The Zombies move and you can miss as they get closer. Tight spaces and multiple headshots needed, most people would miss a few timesWell yeah, that's part of what makes it fun
>>529610721I think it looks perfectly fine as a game. Itโs just not Silent Hill. No sleepy midwestern American town setting, no gloomy fog, no early 2000s/90s setting (afaik anyway). Should have just started up a new IP.
>>529617503Did he ever say where he went or why he left? Guy was cool
>>529619108>Did he ever say where he went or why he left?not that i remember seeing
>>529610721> It Looks so good but that Japanese flesh light girl is holding a metal pipe.In one of the gameplay trailers, we also see her wielding a katana I think.
>>529627350While you were shitposting on Mongolian basket weaving forums, she studied the blade...
>>529610721>>529614482>>529627350Silent Hill was always more melee focused than Resident Evil and SH4 already took the Silent Hill out of the franchise and it was always Team Silent's plans that future entries would take place anywhere but the town itself although SH4 still had a connection to the town through its main antagonist and you even briefly visit Toluca Lake at some point. It doesnโt look like this one is even trying to be connected at all but maybe it will be another Miranda from RE8 situation.
The only thing Iโm worried about is their claim that itโs going to be even MORE action focused than SH2R which I will never for the life of me understand why everyone praises so much because of how utterly repetitive the combat is in that game which is just an objective fact. I donโt even think action is incompatible with horror like many people online seem to do Iโm just worried itโll be even more repetitive making it just boring instead especially since it looks like it's entirely melee focused but for a game that's clearly not trying to be Ninja Gaiden.

>>529639856AAAAHHHH FUCK YOU IT'S IN MY HEAD NOW
>>529639856Don't know the source but I've always liked slime monsters. There is a lot of cool visual stuff they can do.
>>529501331I just couldn't stand the way TEW2 felt in terms of atmosphere and story. Sebastian went from no personality to a very generic middle aged dad hero (this was really popular at the time, I blame The Last of Us) right down to the goofy permanently bandaged hands. The enemies range from genuinely horrifying (the tall deformed women that gasp constantly) to dumb and silly (cum zombies that bleed pink jam). The setting, a city stuck in perpetual night, floating in a dark void, with the worst horrors a human mind can imagine lurking around, was horribly underutilized and most of it is just empty with nothing spooky going on at all. Stefano is an annoying homo and the religious nigga with his fire and brimstone shit was just lame.
The intro of the game, where you are wandering through a dark and quiet hotel (?) with Stefano's fucked up "art" everywhere, the phone ringing and him laughing when you pick it up, the clock pendulum constantly making noise, the hallway full of hanging women, that was the only genuinely spooky part of the entire game. They just forgot to make a HORROR game.
This isn't even getting into the technical or gameplay issues, like the fact that the game runs like diarrhea because it doesn't use your full CPU power, the awful mouse controls, the fact that your FOV is forced so tight in first person mode, stealth being absurdly easy and OP, half the guns you get being worse than earlier ones etc.
>>529501331I liked TEW2 significantly more than TEW1
TEW1 tried to be RE4 but also "horror" and ended up being a fucking slog with what is genuinely one of the most abysmal DLCs I've ever played(and one of the only DLCs I just dropped because fuck that) whereas TEW2 had an identity, it knew it was an action adventure game with monsters and a cute japanese girl, and it knew that it didn't need to half ass itself into any particular genre like 1
I'm sad we'll never get a 3 because 2 was so fun
>>529614482Seconding this sentiment but also I really don't think it looks fine as a game, just generic third person shit like the remake of 2 was.
>>529610721Silent Hill was always melee centric, the pipe you get very early in 1 shits on every enemy except the air screamers. Neither of the RE remakes you mentioned are spooky at all and the danger of combat does not contribute or detract from scariness at all.
>>529655563I feel the only SH game I've played that was genuinely melee centric was 4, 1-3 always seemed pretty gun heavy with how much ammo it gave you(and 1 especially because every time you aimed your gun it reloaded itself)
granted 1 also had the hammer or axe or whatever it was you find in the hospital generator room that just made combat completely irrelevant with how easy it made it
>>529655737I guess melee centric isn't the right way to put it, you can certainly blast everything, but it's much more viable than say, Resident Evil, since you actually get melee weapons that have the reach and power necessary to rely upon for most fights. You can reliably kill most monsters in the series by beating the shit out of them, while doing the same with the knife in RE is a serious challenge.
>>529656127that's fair
though CVX's knife was insanely broken, I genuinely didn't believe when people said it was broken and when I tried it I was flabbergasted
My favorite Silent Hill? Forbidden Siren.
>>529666375Top tier atmosphere and sightjacking is cool
Could've been more well known if it was easier, had no escort missions, focused on one playable character and less redoing the same areas
As it stands it's more like a stealth game with horror aesthetics
>>529333032 (OP)How are we feeling about Alien Isolation 2?
>>529610721That's what you did wrong right there, you played the remake as your first SH game, they went full re4 focusing in melee combat a lot,i personally like it over the original but they overdid the amount of melee combat they want you to do,specially near the end of the game
Should try hidden deep if you like atmospheric horror and exploration, love the grappling hook mehanics
>>529674790Huh! Apparently I've already got this, how half-finished is that EA?
>>529675878I would say it is like 90% done, might run into a bug here and there can just die/restart or load the level manually if it is a softlock,4-6 hours minimum to complete,i would say is worth getting on sale
>>529676749Ah, sounds worth downloading at least. Thanks for reminding me
>>529580164Natalie Portman used to be so cute.
>>529655202I loved Stefano personally. I think his lines and backstory were very interesting and original. I hated how they killed him off so early. Theodore was just kind of lame though yeah and his final boss fight just being a retread of the first games ones was lazy. I also thought it was pretty scary but Iโm kind of a wuss so meh.
sex with...
dog form birkin?
>>529637375I think it just goes to show that SH2โs story and overall presentation is just THAT good and that itโs perfectly valid to like a game just for that reason. The Silent Hill subreddit went from praising to constantly clowning on the OG while singing the remakeโs praises like everything it does is an objective improvement including all the things that made the OG actually stand the test of time (aka everything but the gameplay which I will always maintain is serviceable but mediocre aside from the puzzles which are all great) but thereโs simply no denying that the combat feels repetitive even if it technically plays a lot better which in itself isnโt exactly a big achievement.
The enemy and weapon variety simply doesnโt account for the massive increase in forced encounters and they even outright removed two weapons and any secondary attacks for the melee ones and the steel pipe is literally just the plank except for a slight increase in damage. It doesn't even have a longer reach like in OG. Two of the bosses also have the same spider form too which sucks since I always loved how surreal the Flesh Lips fight was for them hanging off the ceiling and sliding around.
It also has less replay value because of their decision to stretch the length of the game to 3x that of the OG and to not include the Hyper Spray or the 10 Star Ranking but I guess most people don't really care about that. They rarely finish the first playthrough anyway. The two extra endings sadly don't really make up for it either.

It's pretty sad that /vg/ doesn't seem to care as much about horror games as /tv/ does horror movies. Is it the near total lack of AAA/mainstream horror compared to cinema and nobody really cares about the indies and AAs or something? Or does it just always have to be le spooktober? is this worth buying on sale? I only played a bit of Silent Hill 1 on PSX and liked it well enough. Never played Silent Hill 2 but I could play my gf's copy on PS2 if I can track down a CRT to play it on.
>>529890707I think you should buy it. It's a great experience in my opinion.
>>529890707It depends. If you're not the type to mind repetitive combat and exploration and lack of replayability then by all means go for it but SH2 is primarily a narrative and atmosphere driven game and the original is still the best way to experience those aspects. There's barely any forced combat either so in case you really can't stand the jankiness of it you don't have to fight a lot. The old game is very easy though which is one aspect the remake improves upon but at the cost of repetition. I would still try the original first and then just grab the remake off of GOG.
>>529890707Ehhh, Iโd wait until it goes a bit lower. Itโs a solid game for what it is but it doesnโt feel worth it like that. Iโm waiting for a better one myself, hopefully theyโll bring it down this October.
Maybe it would help with engagement if people were more comfortable discussing Doom and Quake wads here too. STALKER already has its own general so that one's out and there has already been an attempt at a Doom general that failed just like the Resident Evil one and indie horror games one.
Darkwater has a lot of potential as a lethal company clone, it having more combat options and even submarine combat is very unique and cool, but it lacks content dramatically, as most lethal company clones and even lethal company itself lacks without mods.
I do like that instead of having to worry about filling some artificial "quota" it's more about worrying about your own survival with your submarine not having enough fuel.
With that being said I feel like this game would have been better as a fleshed out co-op Horror RPG or Horror survival game, rather than a Lethal Company clone.
>>529909070I don't think a /stalker/ general can survive. It isn't a live service like the other generals and it doesn't have the waifu factor to keep it going. The only horror games that can sustain themselves are FNAF (The king of indie horror), DDLC (Wauifu factor), TCOAAL (Waifu Factor), and DBD (Live Service). I have half a mind to drop a link to this general there (in case it dies) but I'm worried it would be viewed as rude. I'm not great at this social interaction thing.
>>529909070Pretty sure the general does allow you to discuss mods from any game doesn't it? I mean theoretically we'd be able to even discuss minecraft horror mods.
>>529915457Thereโs already a Stalker general and itโs doing well enough, thatโs what he said
>>529915670If some autist manages do a somewhat decent and atmospheric horror mod for Minecraft, sure?
>>529920925They do exist, outside of the clickbait youtube videos/tiktoks there's ways to turn minecraft into honestly a better horror experience than many horror games I have played, but that's more to do with most horror games being unity/unreal slop.
>>529915457It comes and goes but the STALKER generals are usually fairly active. Hell even the Poppy Playtime General is still going but the Mascot Horror General and FNAF generals have both died. There are many opportunities for us to expand this general's focus beyond just Resident Evil, Silent Hill and whatever indies we can find on Steam that not everyone seems interested in playing anyway if they're obscure enough but Poppy Playtime, DBD, TCOAAL and STALKER are all already taken.
>>529925280Actually, the FNAF general is still active. They just fucked with the title to make it harder to search for. No idea why they would do such a thing. Here it is
>>529741163
>>529915670I was more so talking about how those games by themselves aren't thought of as horror by people here even though most considered especially classic Doom as being horror games in the 90s. If you read The Doom Bible, Masters of Doom or John Romero's autobiography they talk about how they always intended for Doom to be a fast paced horror shooter and I think Quake is just the natural evolution of that with its Gothic aesthetics and eerie NIN score. Romero also recently appeared in the Terrorbytes documentary that was a retrospective on horror gaming as a whole and classic Doom gets talked about there and not just Doom 3 which in the modern day conversation is the only time Doom and horror gets used in the same sentence which is a shame.
So I guess what I'm saying is that I think we should be able to talk about all kinds of wads and mods even the non horror ones as long as the games themselves count as horror. I think that's the main issue is that gamers aren't always certain of what can be considered horror because it's not a gameplay genre unless it's survival horror and action and horror are also mutually exclusive according to some. Some might also make a distinction between horror themed and horror which I personally don't the same way I don't make a distinction between film and movie even though someone like Tarantino clearly does when he says Jaws is the GOAT movie but not the best film as if that means anything. Castlevania is pretty obviously a horror series in my mind for this reason since they're basically just old school Universal Monsters and Hammer Horror films but with lots of action. Idk but it's just a suggestion to maybe breathe some new life into this general.
Do you guys think any other games from the 80s/90s will get a revival like Resident Evil/Silent Hill had?
>>529940328Probably not. I was really hopeful for the Alone in The Dark game to lead to a revival. That wasnโt meant to be evidently.
>>529941197Interesting fact. I'm reading the official strategy guide for Alone in the Dark 1+2, and it has a full backstory on Edward Carnby, including the fact that he was a US Marine. I love that kind of deep lore.
>>529920925>>529921268Despite basically becoming a new means for low effort engagement baiting by some people, The Broken Script and similar mods like NoMoon.jar or CRYPTID remain the most effective current Minecraft horror mods. It probably also helps that the very nature of these mods - being primarily slowburn but increasingly ramping up in difficulty and threats to everything in the world - along with the fact that they fundamentally alter and break the game world makes them very much anathema to clickbaiting content farmers who mostly do not wish for their worlds to get corrupted beyond repair, or deleted, or for them to end up permanently banned from them.
>>529952490You're grilling. She's dying and you're grilling.
>>529955349Unironically some mods labelled as "dwellers" not all of them, but dweller like mods, can add a lot to minecraft usually with other mods and atmospheric changes, like mods that make audio/lighting more realistic, shaders, etc.
Having one being in the world can add a lot of atmosphere to minecraft, yes slowburn horror mods or things not explicitly dwellers are also very good, or have the potential to be aswell, but I think a lot of people dismiss minecraft horror mods because they play them in packs filled with tons of them which honestly just overwhelm the experience, or see horrible tiktok/youtube videos about them.
I'm sure some people have also genuinely had a horrible experience with a minecraft horror mod don't get me wrong, but I doubt many of the people who shit talk them have even tried one, let alone attempted to make it better or more fun with other mods.
>>529929148>John Romero's autobiographyIt's called Doom Guy: Life in First Person. I've read it and it actually provides some interesting tidbits about id's early history. Romero allegedly suffers from hyperthymesia so he's able to recall everything in great detail including his own thought process behind Doom's design choices at the time they were making it. I would recommend giving it a read to anyone interested in gaming history, Doom or Quake's troubled development.
Would you be ripped out of a horror game's atmosphere if the way you dealt with monsters is silly? Like if a game had silent hill esque vibrating ghosts and monsters would they stop being disturbing to you if instead of fighting them you just exorcise them by going up to them and telling them to go home?
>>529976868I mean, yeah, that'd be kind of anti climactic
>>529965490>but I think a lot of people dismiss minecraft horror mods because they play them in packs filled with tons of them which honestly just overwhelm the experience, or see horrible tiktok/youtube videos about them. That's exactly it. They simply get overstimulated because of all the modpacks going around these days that are just stuffed to the gills with the fucking things and because shitty content farms find them easily exploitable. A couple dwellers or dweller-like mods in conjunction with some other stuff makes for a pretty tense experience, without overstimulating anyone to the point of desensitization. I personally find the Mangled Hound and the Anomaly to be pretty cool, as well as the Slumbering Omen (though that one isn't a Dweller mod).

>>529836648Put on your glasses and use the zoom function anon. It says the image was made in 2009 so it's as good as it gets.
I don't understand why KT refuses to port Fatal Frame 2's wiimake when it runs on the same engine as MotLE so there's no way they don't have the source code if they had it for a game from 2008. They must've been disatisfied with the sales of that one since it was an actual remaster unlike MoBW but they still keep churning out Atelier games even though they sell on average as much as Fatal Frame does.

I'm already chickenshit to horror, but I was also absolutely disgusted at how much of a pigsty the entire base was when I started playing. I'm barely 10 days in but went through grueling effort to clean the place up.
I think the psychological horror of the demons/aliens will be much worse if they start littering the place and dirtying everything. I might genuinely quit if something coats the base in garbage like it was at the start.

>>530117074I played DC1 last year after that survey Capcom did and t b h I think it's kind of mediocre. There's a lot of puzzle solving, lots of backtracking and not a lot of enemy variety either which would be fine if you at least didn't deal with them all the same way with your shotgun and darts. The only things DC1 really has going for it is that PS1 era comfiness to it and it actually does nail that horror atmosphere too.

>>530209504>>530212231Re4 remake kinda mid ngl. Ruined Salazar, way too easy, cut away a lot of the dialogue that gave the original its charm. Most egregiously of all it somehow pushes ashley-leon shipping way more than the original too, Ashley is even thirstier for leon in the remake. They should just have Leon marry Claire Redfield in canon (the only pairing with actual chemistry and makes the most sense) and be done with the gay shipping bait.
You know I just watched a walk-through of both the Retronomicon & WINE dub of Dead of the Brain, and I think I prefer the Retronomicon version despite it being supposedly less accurate to the source material. On a grammar level, it's inferior, with there being more mistakes than the Wine dub, which only has one.
However, the Retronomicon dub on average has a greater emotional resonance than the WINE dub. There's a variety of subtle touches that I prefer, but my favorite is the subtle theme surrounding the value of life that's lost in the WINE dub.
In the climax of the game, the main antagonist is a bitter nihilist who believes that life is an inherently miserable experience and enjoys seeing people suffer in agony like he has. Everyone else in the scene dies with regret at their unfulfilled dreams, with the detective, who, despite putting on a brave face, died screaming for help with him being unable to avenge his family, and the girl who sacrificed her life to defeat the main antagonist. Calling for the main protagonist to live a happy life with his girlfriend despite the fact that she fell in love with him. This senseless loss of life made the protagonist resolve to live a happy life with her girlfriend to honor the dead.
In contrast, the WINE dub has the antagonist be a card-carrying psychopath who murders people for fun; his plan is mildly less sophisticated (he placed multiple snares in the Retronomicon unlike the WINE dub, where he only placed one). Basically, in the Retronomicon dub, the dude's a sophisticated mastermind with depth, while in the WINE dub, he's a one-dimensional upjumped brute. Additionally, in the WINE dub, everyone's too stoic about their deaths, with their final words being entirely centered on the protagonist's relationship with his girlfriend, with the ending reinforcing this further. (The post's getting too long, so I'll continue this analysis in my next post).
>>530217995In the Retronomicon dub, the protagonist swears that he'll live like every year is his last, while in the WINE dub, he swears that he wants to live with his girlfriend for decades on end.
Basically, the Retronomicon dub presents a clear theme that pervades throughout the work, while the WINE dub makes the game a half-baked love story that simplifies most aspects as a sacrifice to it.
>>530218352Also, as a final remark. Schrรถdinger (Retronomicon) is a way cooler name for an undead cat than Kitty (WINE).
what if the novistadors oviposited ashley hahaha

It's frankly impressive how much of the oppressive, horrible atmosphere of this place goes away once all the garbage, filth and grime is removed.
combined with the soothing presence of the emotional support crowbar(tm) this place feels downright cozy. I'm not even that terrified of the aliens anymore.
It also doesn't help that I have had barely anything happen other than 2 scary fucking events on day ONE. It's currently day 14 and the most weird shit I had happen was that I saw the arrow ships twice now, once in the sky and once on the ground (got two arrow ship minis off of that). Should I turn on the funny setting? It says it's not reccomended on first playthroughs and I'm generally weak to horror but I'm starting to feel TOO comfortable.

>>530209094>>530217019Nightdive make faithful remasters but they're still planning on making a full blown remake of SS2 as well which was much more understandable for SS1 due to the way it was designed around M+KB but they haven't even started development on it yet and considering how long it took them just to release this one I'm not sure they will actually go through with it anyway. The SS1 remake was announced way back in 2015 and didn't get a release until 2 years ago. I get it though they're a small but passionate studio.
Honestly makes me wish they would get hired by Konami to remaster and port Silent Hill 1-4 on modern systems and use their time and resources on that instead since they have a lot of experience with reverse engineering and Bluepoint belong to Sony now.

>>530228746>fear of the ocean (just looked it up)Does playing Bioshock and SOMA also do it for you?
>>530233106Bioshock no, SOMA yes. Honestly it's partially a matter of visuals, the most common thing is if I can't see. The mission in new vegas where you swim to lift the bomber used to scare the shit out of me. A similar emotion happens from noclipping in games and you're just in a grey void. Sometimes I find worse graphics actually freak me out more in this context, which is weird. So being unable to see the floor freaks me out, and doom's idea of the eldritch horror world is that it should have oceans that never end that absorb sunken boats from all over the world, which is very scary to me

After enough time in game you start getting garbled radio messages from bioengineered killing machines that have killed all the other survivors but yourself and it's pretty freaky. >how I'm supposed to lug stuff from other locations when inventory fills up quickI mean, you'll keep revisiting these locations on a playthrough so I figure you just take the most valuable things peacemeal as the days go on. Some things aren't worth carrying though like toolboxes or gas cans. Though there is a trick: If you buy a hook (50 points), you can attach your luggage bag to the ATV and use it to carry way more than you do normally.
Some stuff I figured out:
*Crowbar is exceptionally useful. break boxes extremely fast, very convenient. Also very strong mental buff. Gordon Freeman clearly felt no fear with this thing.
*Early game, you're better off cleaning your base. A single item box full of garbage will net you ~400 points, which is way more than you'll get in early game signal processing. Just do daily tasks and then play cleaning simulator till your base is sparkling. Probably some ~300-400points a day doing this.
*Upgrade transformer and server stability ASAP. Less time spent fixing shit is more time spent making money
*Buy the digital map or, if you don't mind meta-gaming, keep a tab open with the map of the satellites/transformers. Plot routes with the smallest distance possible to optimise your time and fuel.

ok i picked up sh2r. did the original have a minimum of 1 enemy every block? the sheer amount of combat is tiring. also are there audio cues beyond the radio for when you're going to be attacked? The music is weird, it keeps amping up as if an attack is going to happen but nothing happens
>>530367856original had door transitions and enemies were easy to avoid, so you'd finish the game with like 50 enemies killed compared to the remake's 350
>also are there audio cues beyond the radio for when you're going to be attacked?aside from the sounds the monsters themselves make? no, goes for the original as well
spooky music may play even when no monsters are around, that's true for every silent hill
I used to want to make my own horror parody game as well as an indie horror platform fighter crossover.
But should i even try at this point when i have become so disillusioned with the community, industry and all who used to inspire me?

Not that much of interest has happened this day, but I managed to finish the daily task at 10AM and now had some time to further reorganize my base. till the seconds stage, where I had to sprint to juke its attacks
then the third stage was stupid fucking fast and I didn't stand a chance to go melee, so I just spammed all the molotovs I had at it
It still hit me a lot and I had spent my medikit already so I had to resort to bandages before jumping into the river

>>530738269>>530742006I thought it was alright for what it was. Better than AW at least. Not so sure about it being horror. I think horror elements fits better.
>>530755357Probably gacha schizos up to their usual BS.
>>530715181The biggest red flags for me are them boasting it's going to be even heavier on the combat than SH2R and being entirely melee focused and only having 6 confirmed weapons to choose from (so far at least) and the $80 price tag. Konami is being way too confident because of one modest success without properly understanding that the market for AAA horror games was already niche when games were $20 cheaper last year. EA and Krafton made the same mistakes in 2023 and we'll most likely never get another Dead Space ever again as a result. Resident Evil is generally the exception to this rule.
Setting it in Japan is risky but I'm fine with it as long as there is some connection to the town of Silent Hill at some point. Okamoto's idea of "Silent Hill" being a phenomenon that can occur anywhere in the world without any connection to the town even just through a character or an artifact or something is stupid. It doesn't work at all because it's not like Resident Evil's bioterrorism that can go global and keep going forever and ever.
I hope it's successful though. If Konami are going to continue licensing the IP out rather than develop in-house I'd rather have them stick with East Asian devs over Western ones who think they always know better. Silent Hill just like Resident Evil is American horror meets Japanese sensibilities.

SHARK DENTIST
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdGbDr18LOU
In the interest of getting some discussion going I'm curious to know if anyone here considers Arkham Asylum a lowkey horror game? The Scarecrow segments, Killer Croc, Victor Zasz, all those dead bodies that keep piling up as the game progresses, the schizo inmates that charges at you and jumpscares you sometimes, the body horror Titans, the general atmosphere. There's a lot to love as a horror fan
>>530912454>all the comments immediately giving the game shit because of how real world sharks workLmao
terminator resistance is a ridiculously janky game, the fact it came out like half a decade after alien isolation and yet looks worse is almost impressive
but i'm a terminator mark and i'm loving it
After separated ways, would you give M-two another remake to work?
>>530911465OUR HEROES...and Wesker.
>>530916393The Croc segment definitely always struck me as horror inspired. Batman in general has always leaned into horror stuff more than most mainstream capeshit, right down to Arkham being taken straight from Lovecraft. Donโt know if I would consider it a horror game but the elements are there.
>>530916393The only thing that stops it from being a horror game is the Riddler's challenges; however, otherwise it nails a grim atmosphere that, while not scary, is aesthetically creepy.

I wanna mess around with Code Veronica X on Dolphin so I tried applying the difficulty select mod to fuck around on very easy mode but I get black screen every time after exist the pause menu.
Any idea what could be causing this issue? I'm using the Gecko code I got from within Dolphin
>>530926923Even though both franchises have a lot of shit in between them I actually think Alien has more good than bad entries including the video games. Alien: Isolation is a masterpiece it's a crime that it didn't sell that well because the market just isn't there for these types of games relative to how expensive they are to make. That's one area where horror movies will always have the leg up on horror gaming.
I really hope the sequel proves more successful. I like indies and AAs but it's just not the same experience as a good AAA with higher production values.

>>530989378Speaking of AA did you guys know that ILL turned out not to be vaporware after all? Some of the stuff still looks kind of scripted (not as much as the first trailer though) but I'm hopeful. They even got backed by the Atomic Heart publisher Mundfish

>>530985413I'm running out of things to have sex with anon give me a break
>>530916393I thought the first Scarecrow segment was pretty unsettling because you aren't really expecting it
>>531010431How far along in development do you think they were before they partnered up with Mundfish?
>>531024894No clue. I canโt imagine it was very far though, the gameplay they showed last month is far and above the most theyโve shown since it was announced. Thankfully it doesnโt seem to be a very long game so hopefully these added resources will enable them to get out in a timely manner (while hopefully still being good of course).
>>531035101But what have they been doing all this time then? They must've done more than just making scripted cutscenes to show off every couple of years.
>>531035782Most likely building models and set pieces.
>>531037834Doesn't that mean they might still be years off? I think a game of this scope can best be compared to Scorn which took 9 years to develop and was only like a 5-8 hour long game with no replay value to speak of.
Still think it was a good game though.
>>531038907>Doesn't that mean they might still be years off? Possibly. The first trailer for Atomic Heart was in 2018 and it came out in 2023, so a 6 year gap. ILL was first teased in 2021 and has since gotten more news about it, so a shorter timeframe and it has am ore developed Mundfish backing it now - so if it even remotely got any decent development in from its first announcement till now, then we might have a chance of seeing it sooner rather than later.
i want to play more silent hill but a sense of unease prevented me from doing so yesterday. why does this only happen with silent hill? i was always excited to see what was next for me in RE games but sh just gives me a sense of dread i have to work through
for what purpose did they make remake angela so fuckable
>>531048537Silent Hill at its core is psychological horror, so they're constantly trying to keep the audience unsettled with an oppressive atmosphere and dark themes that are real.
Resident Evil is a lot more cartoonish in comparison since it revolves around foiling the mastermind of the week's evil plan by shooting his henchmen. It thus generally has a more optimistic tone, and it's more of a thriller than being actually scary.
>>530996991Nice to see that this project is still going forward.
>>531062359I guess that's what happens when a game gets HD graphics.
is it just because silent hill is a video game that we find ammo, health drinks and solutions to puzzles in it or is sh not an entirely malevolent force? does it actually want those that wander in to seek absolution
>>531048537It's because the town itself feels like a conscious, unknowable entity that doesn't like you
So they can add however many goofy things in the game they want, UFOs, dogs, heather beams etc. the sense of unease doesn't go away
Except when they decided to turn it into a therapist town that wants to cure you of your guilt, that totally dispels the unease for me
>>531074291>and it's more of a thriller than being actually scary.Just because you didn't find something scary doesn't mean it's a thriller.

I loved RE4 but acknowledge that it killed horror games in the grand scheme of things by making them be more like 4 rather than 1-3
>>531062359They didnโt?

I'm replaying Dead Space Remake, and one thing I detest they kept from the previous games is the incapacity to skip cutscenes, and I don't understand why they do this... It just makes replays take longer, specially that intro. Unskippable cutscenes should've never been a thing.
At least there's a glitch to skip video/audio logs, which unlocks doors faster...

>>531220743He only started posting here sometime last October. He comes from /dbdg/ (formerly /assg/) but regularly shat up other generals like /tesg/ and /gta/ and more recently /mrg/ and us.
>>531224031So what's the problem then? If those generals can all survive having a schizo why can't this one? I'm not defending him but it's depressing that the general horror focused thread is the only one that has regular posters fleeing because of one schizo who is probably easy to ignore.
>>531225549Heโs not easy to ignore. Weโre a slow general. Those other ones are fast. Slower places are always vulnerable to bad actors. Anytime he incessantly shits things up it has a noticeable impact whereas in those other generals it can usually be drowned out because people are talking about stuff. >>531296958I stopped caring about reviews a long time ago honestly. >>529369236yes something that is always forgotten by people is that the game gets really boring and dry after the first 3 or so levels and then has the worse ending of the two games. system shock 1 remains fresh and engaging throughout mostly because it allows some soft sequence breaking and a lot of intel skipping whereas system shock 2 forces you down the same linear sequence of scares the whole time, this is one of many reasons i find system shock 1 superior.

>>531193149>I'd argue Baro is more suspenseful than horrorWhat's the difference in your mind?
>>531406074The horror aspect of it is all in the designs of the enemies and *some* of the lore (see: Church of the Husk). Sure, the game can be fairly scary at first, but to anyone who's even played a couple of rounds, there's more worry as to how well equipped you are to deal with any given threat or job. In many cases, it's easy to take down even large enemies, even with a sub as crappy (yet reliable) as the Dugong, and almost all enemies can be easily thrown off in the middle of an attack. The only fearful part is whether or not you have Calyxanide when dealing with husked enemies. Lastly, any horror is greatly reduced or even negated if you actually have a proper crew to play with.
Overall, it's like calling Killing Floor a horror game: sure, it has horror elements, but it's far from horror.
Then again, maybe I've played the game too much now to be horrified by it in any context.
I understand my logic is flawed, but even when I first started playing Baro, I wasn't all that scared.
>>531402923That was actually a bad game that *everyone* was trashing though
>>531409564>Overall, it's like calling Killing Floor a horror game: sure, it has horror elements, but it's far from horror. Both of these are horror games though. They're just not the type where you'll be scared much once you learn the mechanics. Baro is utterly terrifying when you first play, but then it becomes more goofy as you laugh at whatever silly ways your crew dies this time. Kinda like Lethal Company or REPO.

>>531409564I appreciate the response but you're equating difficulty with horror and you're confusing your own personal feelings with creative/authorial intent. That's the fundamental difference. The Killing Floor games, including the upcoming 3rd installment, are considered horror games by the devs and Baro is also called a horror game by the devs. There are lots of examples like that honestly.
>>531411318>>531412035True, but neither Killing Floor nor Baro come off as horror to me.
As for the difficulty, take Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Alien: Isolation, or hell, even the first FNaF. All three games are painfully easy, especially when you learn exactly how the AI behaves, but the presentation make them outright terrifying. I guess it's all in the presentation and how one views the presentation. I've seen plenty of praise for SH2's approach to horror, while others claim it to be a boring ass game.
Also, in the case of Baro, it doesn't help any that I went into it with the mindset of a Space Station 13 player (which, if I recall, Regalis even stated that was one of the key inspirations for Baro).
>>531414263AI on the highest difficulties is a nightmare, waaaay harder than the other two, especially if you have the noise detection feature on
>>531415834I never got the chance to play with noise detection enabled, so I'll take your word for it.
But enough about my retardation. Have you tried the new Holstin demo?
>>531414263>True, but neither Killing Floor nor Baro come off as horror to me.It's because you think horror is about not being in control aka being under-armed and out of your depth versus whatever threat it is you're facing off against but that's also not what horror is about. You look at a game like Killing Floor and think all of the horror elements like the grotesque looking monsters and the indoor environments like the bathrooms with blood splattered everywhere on the floor and walls no longer belong as horror if you're too much of a badass. This is clearly not a universally held viewpoint though judging from other examples of action/horror games and movies.
>>531417796>Holstin DemoI havenโt actually. Is it any good? Whatโs it about?
>>531418542You're right. I guess I have lost sight of what horror is because I've become desensitized to common themes and tropes. I concede.
>>531422318It's pretty damn good so far, and longer than what I expected it to be. It's about a man looking for his journalist friend in a sleepy Polish town hit by a strange plague after communication with him goes silent. Presumably, you're going to be finding your friend and figuring out how to stop the plague.
>>531423419No worries anon, I've been there myself. It's a very broad genre when it comes down to it, something I didn't fully realize myself until years after I first started watching horror movies and playing horror games and it can admittedly be confusing especially if you're desensitized as you say.
Any recommendations like Voices of the Void? I like horror when it is around but not on your face all the time.
