Regardless of which version of BN1 you play, please understand that BN1 is one of the low points of the series, but it's Capcom trying to find their footing with it; by BN2, there are lots of improvements over the first, and you can only really appreciate them after playing BN1
That being said, it's also much harder to return to BN1 after playing later entries, so maybe give it a try, and if you find it too clunky, then try going into BN2, and seeing how that is.
