I think it's really fucking retarded that because we now have writers that are too active within the fandom, they also put too much stock into shipping bullshit. There's a lot of horror stories of Americans vs Japanese when it came to releasing the titles in the US, such as trying to take credit for or changing things for their audiences. Accidentally fumbled their own gaming market and the Japanese doing it better probably stung, not to mention already anti-Japanese rhetoric of the time, especially with cars.
Europe had no such gaming crash and no real big beef with Japan, or at least not the US branded racism.
Also, although I can't confirm this, the British were powerhouses of getting shit working. While the US shat the bed in the gaming market, the UK were coding and making their own games, helped of course by the Government funding the BBC Micro. By the time of Sonic R it was a nation of programmers.
