And here's the real crux of it. We don't deserve nice things from nice people. I can't for the life of me understand why some of the nicer hosts even bother, but they do. And the "host a gameplay meetup" retards don't understand how bad the game is for facilitating something like that. If you do a raid meetup, then you're full after 7 more people join. That leaves potentially hundreds of angry people who can't partake. If you host an alliance raid meetup, you still run into the issue of people being left out, and the allyraids have been done to death; nobody truly cares about that stuff.

Also LOL at people acting like they miss the party game meetups. If that's the case, go ahead and fucking host one. They're easy to set up. All you need is a room and people willing to participate. Oh, but wait. They never want to lead. Nobody wants to put themselves out there. Auction meets need something new, but there's a level of trust and acceptance from the community that they take that pushing the boundaries of can be a bit risky.

I think ideally, future auction meetups should
1) Have a cut for the host, an incentive for people to actually put up with the hours it takes to do
2) Possibly an extra cut to pay for some big rewards to give out so people have something motivating them to go for more than just people-watching

Like, lets be honest here, auction meets are some of the most cliqued up meets because the super popular ebins, or artists, will make 9 billion gil in a night but the regular joes who make up 90% of the meetup will get crickets when they go on stage until a friend bids on them out of guilt, so having some extra incentives for people to show up that aren't just money laundering within their friend group would be ideal.

Yeah, you're right. This is why most /xivg/ FCs fall apart. During the lows, people quit and the guild experiences a major slump in activity. And less people come back with each new update. This is what happened in the last xivg FC I was part of. In its final months, I was whatever rank is below GM. I could invite folks and do some administrative stuff, basically, and the actual GM barely logged in anymore except to fuck with submarines. It already struggled to keep members due to the "constant highs and lows." Then stupid bullshit happened all around that to exacerbate things. The devs went and made a bunch of new wards, but they made most of them for FC houses only, which pushed people to create solo FCs and leave their current ones. Then dynamis came out, which promised more housing, so lots of people left their server (and with that, their current FC as well) to try their luck on a new DC.

So many reasons to never be in a community FC, combined with the game itself making it hard to want to stay subbed at all, and the head dev coming out and encouraging people to just quit and play other shit. Imagine trying to keep shit active. Imagine feeling a little responsible for keeping shit active in a dead FC where the leader doesn't even log in anymore and most of the members have quit or log in and just play on Aether. And then you tune into a live letter hoping for some news that'll bring members back, only to see Yoshida playing his fucking nintendo switch and encouraging the game's dwindling community to check out zelda or play some elden ring or whatever. I gave up after a while of that, and just did what everyone else was doing and made my own solo fc. The old FC I was part of completely fell apart after that, and wouldn't you know it, there were people blaming me for leaving and saying that I killed it. It's not worth it.

That's the thing, and it goes both ways. On one hand, the meetup shouldn't be confined to only being run by the most trusted people of the community (there's very few people who would even be mutually agreed upon and those people probably wouldn't want to be volunteered to run a meetup).
On the other hand, auction meets require a bit of trust. Not in the "you have to have our trust" way, but more in the sense that some schizo will probably abuse the moment to cast doubts on someone who isn't well known, if they feel so inclined.

Also, one thing I considered just now is that an Auction Meet that takes a cut needs a middle-man, a helper. Gil takes too long to trade in XIV so you can't have the host deal with that directly or it will be an 8 hour long meet. You'd need both a willing host AND a helper that the host chooses and trusts to facilitate trades. It'd be a mess but nothing /xivg/ hasn't handled before.

Just adds more to the reasons why a fleshed out meeting with care put into it that brings innovation is a rarity.

I think it's in a decline, but all it'll take is a single good expansion to bring it back. I don't think we're in a longterm death spiral. I've seen those before, in other games, and this doesn't look quite like that. But the sense of community in this game? That is absolutely turbofucked atm. The last time I felt like the game had a welcoming community was when I played on the cloud test servers, pic related, and since nobody had their hangups from their main (this is hard to express, but basically there was no fear that anything someone did would "stick" to the avatar they'd grown attached to) everyone felt free to just do what they wanted and be who they wanted. And since everyone was forced onto two servers instead of several dozen, with no housing incentive at all due to the short duration, we had actual FCs popping up again and community efforts to get queues popping. People from all regions were here and making it work. The community consisted mostly of people who just enjoyed playing the game for its own sake, because anyone who cared about a reward left when they realized there weren't any. It felt fun, and good. Really good. It's probably the last time I've smiled and laughed a ton while playing this game.

Yeah I've hosted some party games meetups and date matchup meetups that had helpers just because it gets so intense hosting something and having a little help not only takes some of the weight off the host's shoulders but allows for a bit more interaction for a better meetup overall.

Hell, I've even hosted a meetup where I not only had a helper, but I also had a staff of "maids" to essentially go around and offer refreshments and mix with the guests and see how people are doing, and I think that worked great but it took a lot to prepare.

It's a big reason I think why movie meetups really took off. You don't need planning. You don't need a helper. You load up a movie and press play and everyone just talks and keeps themselves entertained. There's no real playing host there, other than choosing a movie and providing a venue, which mind you aren't nothing tasks it's just socially simple by comparison.

No one wants to join your FCs because you guys have all this weird clique and schizo bullshit and you bring 10 years of baggage to every interaction and event

The noticeable problem with NA player auctions compared to what I worked with on JP is:

1: A lack of interesting offers for sale.

JP had stuff from GPoses and Photoshoots, to art commissions, and we even had a guy who made you your own theme music
Escorts, dates, content slaves and such were there too, but the more tangible, creative stuff went for way more and was more in demand. People had portfolios ready to show their work, examples of the music and such.

2: A lack of professional expectation

I understand that it's inherently a different culture and the auctions themselves are still reasonably new as a concept to run so the hosts and organisers probably don't have a feel for the kind of information they need to track, but by establishing a proper procedure, time limits, content limits, and bidding rules, you create a more fluid and exciting environment rather than letting it drag on

This includes tracking people being sold, what they're going to offer, who won the bids (and who was the second highest in case the first falls through) etc, and establishes a reputation and precedent for the future

If you don't present as professional, you don't get taken seriously enough to wrangle a crowd for an event like this, and it all goes to shit fast. An auction cannot be run by a single person, you need a team of around 5-8 people to keep the flow.

I don't doubt JP had those, and that's a good thing, but we're a community of people with motivation starvation, I don't think it's fair to compare. We'll have creatives who go for a lot because they do that but they'll be infrequent compared to the subs who want to offer their soul and dignity for the night, and I think that's okay. I think we need to do more for the types of people we have if we continue to do auction meets.

I agree wholly but it's also a reason I can point to that reinforces why we simply don't have these but once in a blue moon and usually without a host that cares enough to put in the effort it really needs to shine. And to reinforce things I've said earlier, even with fairly good hosts, we have a community that heavily idealizes freedom so we can't exactly go all out on the professionalism stuff all the time, which means more often than not there's some unintentional flexibility in the rules due to some people undermining them, or just the popularity of some people undermining the expectations of such an event.

The engine is becoming dated, he's scrambling to say they are reworking the battle content, but that is limited by the entire engine itself.
