Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)
Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."
Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

I'm not going to look up what it actually is, but I think it's a smart pointer.
Smart pointers increment every time something is using them and decrement when something stops using them. If the number goes to zero they destroy what they point to.
It's like a mini garbage collector.
Put a breakpoint on the numeric counter for one and watch how it changes.

I was explaining all of this to Susan at work while microwaving fish in our shared break room.

She seemed to get the point as she exited the room with her stupid clown makeup being ruined by her tears.
Rockhead:
I sat down on the sofa, fully intending to enjoy my now mellow and delicious fish.
Rockhead:
The trick to a delicious microwaved fish is a little squeeze of fresh lemon, believe it or not. The zest brings the fish to new heights of oceanic pleasure.

As usual, at the very final moment before indulging in my kingly meal, I naturally added a pinch of salt.

I honestly now want to be inspired by the MIDI tracks of FLStudio and a logic analyzer, but make the x timeline, a timeline of daily life events, like going to school, which changes the waifus psychological variables, but is plotted on the X axis like an oscilloscope, but on each MIDI track.
Now imagine having that, but also a sort of 2D rogulike map visualization to visualize like dwarve fortress each waifu.
but each waifu has something like a PCB inner layer of wires in the map, and only when they cross in the Vector2i position is when they interact with another waifu.
Basically the player has then a free walk mode avatar he can travel and interact with the waifus so he can do wacky shit, like animal crossing mixed with dwarve fortreess and gnomoria.
Eventually there will be ascii and pixel art porn.

>>529570601I like this new one better its more vibrant.
>>529569436Do lots of research on the Pose-to-Pose workflow, it's really efficient: you think of the entire animation in your head, you make the poses of the key moments, then refine the interpolation between them. It's a lot deeper than that (holds, moving holds, graph editor shenanigans and so on), it's all out there on youtube if you look for it.
Also learn the different "handle types" of Blender. The basic one is auto-clamped which doesn't do much of anything, but for fast punches you might want the Vector handle, or for natural motions (like when my character is trying to keep balance when he kicks in that webm) use the Automatic handle.
Or use the custom handle and do the curves yourself in the graph editor if you want really precise stuff.
But yeah start with Pose-to-Pose and its concepts. Makes things way easier.
At the start of this I was thinking I'd be forced to buy a mocap suit, now I don't even WANT that shit, it's really not needed.
Animation on a single character is way faster done by yourself. Mocap is only better when multiple characters are involved in the same scene

I tried making an idle game, but the progression felt so fake, arbitrary, meaningless, that I doubted myself at every step of the way. You really mean to tell me people enjoy games this simple?
Click a button to see numbers going up. This is what people enjoy? How? What?
Pardon my autistic nature, but I can't comprehend how this is enjoyable. I heard they're easy money, but I literally can not create them. My mind goes blank when I try to think of what to do next, because I simply can not imagine enjoying anything about this.
I'm going to stick to my King's Field clones. They're the only games I want to make. Atmospheric exploration games with a macro-scale lore undertone. I quite literally can not make anything else.

>>529571425The axe kick, the followup lift kick, and the fact that they're contextual are all taken directly from God Hand. I mean that game literally has those attacks that's how they work too.
Also making it non-contextual would be a bad idea. An axe-kick is a move that launches on normal hit and hits grounded. Letting the player spam that whenever would be really bad balance. Same for the lift-kick: a kick that upgrades a launcher? Nah, keep it tied as an axe-kick followup, like God Hand did.
I'm going my own way for many parts of the combat but this is one part where the original devs knew what they were doing and I must respect it.

>>529571470Making it non-mobile tier is what's hard about it. All the systems for pops, economy, trade, war, moving armies around the map, interacting with the map itself, and then having every nation run a simualation of all of that shit with their own AI.

>>529572516>on mobile I guess it's all about who buys the most adsIt's the same for indie games as well, except instead of buying ads, you convince content creators to play the game for you. A big content creator making a funny viral clip of your game is equivalent to spending thousands on paid advertisements for a mobile game. Paid ads don't work as well for PC games, since the ad-to-download process isn't as smooth. With mobile games, you see an ad, tap your screen, and download the game immediately. PC games require you to go to your computer, find the game, buy it, and download it.
You're right, btw, I'm just providing my observations in the difference between mobile game promotion and PC game promotion. On PC, it's a bit more difficult. You need to really convince people to play your game.

You know, like a week ago I mentioned ai could make probably 20 assets in a day for a game pretty easily and I meant it but certain fags in the thread tried to say that was impossible. This morning I made webm related fully functioning in like an hour. I'm pretty sure I could do 19 more things pretty damn easily, especially more simplified things to fill out a game like discussed.

>>529579665No sorry that was a swype typo. I just woke up lol.
Every time I say that no one at /agdg/ is making a good game, the response is always "but, my game is good" and is never "I will work to make my game better." This is why none of you will make it. You're too preoccupied with protecting your fragile ego to experience any growth and self-improvement.

>>529579498It's actually quite interesting to see the derangement about AI manifest, and all the different mental gymnastics certain people go through to try and refuse that it's here and powerful and useful, and even still only getting better.

I have to decide if I want there to be autotargeting, namelocking, or homing projectiles in my Diablolike ARPGlike PoElike. Philosophically, I think it kind of sucks to make decisions for the player. In practice, though, actually aiming projectiles while playing those kinds of games feels pretty fucking bad. Much to think about. Any GDC talks or anything I should watch about this?
I've had an empty Unity project open for the whole day unsure what to put in it

>>529580096>>529579719Not AI, just a typo, but AI is basically just like super Google for programming and I think you're silly to not use it as if before it you weren't typing the same shit into Google looking for stack exchange explanations. For art I think it's okay for really generic images (i did generate those jackpot signs and edit them in mspaint/gimp) or a placeholder instead of a blank gray/black, but no real art should be done with AI at all is completely unnecessary and not soulful.
>>529580446put your dick in it, incel

>people are starting a flamewar over AI again
>>529581183you didn't generate game assets but a simple 2D picture thanks for proving my point
>>529581120Yeah it's crazy how much it wants to ignore requests that are simple "take the image you literally just made and make it 100% exactly the same but change the 1 to a 5" *proceeds to make the background blue instead of green for literally no reason*
How would it make you feel to play a demo or game and really enjoy it, then later find out it was mostly AI art...?
Would you feel betrayed, angry? Or some other feeling?
>>529580545The problem I think with namelocking is that if I want to support controllers/WASD (I do) it requires completely different logic than namelocking with a mouse, so that's 2 systems I need to build. Also spear skills in PoE2 feel like shit to aim. So namelocking is my fallback but I'm thinking about alternatives.
>>529580281>current AI is still absolutely useless to make game assestsexcuse me?

After a bunch of pondering and years of playing video games, I have discovered a general rule of thumb for game feel. It is this:
There should be nothing static on screen at any given time.
Whatever the player sees, should be moving, transforming, having an effect of sorts. And it moves even more in response to the player
Anyway not sure how obvious this is but I realized it from thinking about my favorite games. They employ this rule, obviously not as aggresively as I've said, and yes moderation is the key. It shouldn't move too much nor too little, it just shouldn't be that static.
>>529593872That's not a good thing.

>>529596647nta, buuuuuuuuuuuuut, the word "meditation" does not come from the east, in fact, you would not be wrong if you called the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius - the Contemplations of Marcus Aurelius. On another note though, you seem to be unaware of what eastern meditation is, take for example Zen Buddhism, where meditation is: "Zazen, the most common form, involves sitting upright, focusing on breath, and observing thoughts without judgment." It is not emptying oneself of thought, but merely letting them happen, observing if you will, without judgement. Which, if one would ponder enough, is very akin to the stoicism of Marcus Aurelius, while being not quite the same.

i think the ideal games are digital dog walking, yet you are the dog. the mind is bored by daily life and needs to take walks.
that's why sandbox games are so huge. simple games, they don't need tutorials, they don't need any big goals. you just hop in, chop some wood, kill some monsters, build some walls, that's it. digital dog walking but for humans.

I understand what it does, for the top it checks if that thing is null, for the bottom if it's true it'll make thing = 8, if false thing = 4
but what is the question mark called in relation to C#? and are there more operator things like that? I also know of % which checks remainder, like if(floatValue % 2 == 0) will see if it's even, but idk what that's called in C# either

You're obviously not producing anything of value. There is zero revenue resulting from your inputs. You are worse than useless, and your managers moreso for not firing you yet. That's just how industry is nowadays. There are retards like JBlow with more money than sense, or at least until he burnt it all.
I'll explain it for the other less retarded readers here. Memory management is risky, especially on larger codebases managed by larger teams where it's impossible for any single individual to be able to understand the entire codebase. C/C++ is so notorious for defaulting to unsafe memory that the industry invented and strongly pushed for an entire new language (Rust) to replace it for that reason alone. Rust is a language that forces you to box/rc everything by default. i.e., It literally will not compile if you don't use smart pointers, or if you don't explicitly specify that you want unsafe memory. With the great power that comes with unsafe memory comes great responsibility, and none of you are ready for that responsibility. That is why any professional C++ codebase managed by anyone who is not a complete retard enforces smart pointer usage for all heap memory.
If your opinion was simply "smart pointers are cumbersome, inconvenient, and boilerplate for a solodev", I wouldn't have gotten upset at you, even though it would certainly come back to bite them down the line. Saying that smart pointers should never be used is completely asinine. Kill yourself, retard.

With C++ or C# you at least have a viable way out of gamedev even if, in the end, you had nothing to show for your efforts financially. If you're doing C and a framework there's virtually no way you'll be able to transfer your skills into embedded systems and microcontrollers where the average dev has 50+ years of experience. You should keep that in mind.

>>529632982As well as saying it applies to online multiplayer games, the FAQ even applies it to MMORPGs specifically.

I can easily see some companies just pull out of Europe if the effort doesn't seem worthwhile and this would in return cause this bill or whatever it is to fail.
>>529571908modern idle games are complete trash. nobody "enjoys" them, they're just there for one parts dopamine and other parts nostalgia for the good old days.

Everyone wants to preserve everything forever but nobody actually cares about the things they're preserving. It's like keeping an item in your drawer that you'll totally use some year but unless you're suddenly forced to use it you never actually will, it'll just collect dust.

>>529633635Where did you find pics of the original assets? I would have just read a devlog if they were easy to find.
>>529628847I support it in principle but in practice it is never going to pass since it would require completely changing the ownership model of digital goods that is well established across all industries.
It is well established that when you "purchase" a digital product you are only acquiring a temporary license to access that product that can be revoked at any time for any reason. This is a shitty model of course but its probably not going to change.
Also the idea that Blizzard can just release the wow server code once it reaches EOL is laughable. The wow server code is probably inextricably linked with battlenet for things like authentication, anti cheat, drm etc that would all need to be removed otherwise it would have huge implications on their other games. There is no simple way to just remove this, it would likely require a full rewrite and would cost millions.
>>529633827you just gave examples of things that were basically illegal anyway but needed further clarification

Ross on the other hand is reporting about dead games for years now, and seeks solutions inside and outside of industry, Thor was the one cherrypicking Ross's arguments and ran away when Ross went forward and proposed a debate.
And no, you're not safe, when AAA see they can do it, indies are next in line. We already have dozens of discussions what actually is indie at this point, and as soon as you have a publisher, outside funding and a team of people you're not indie. Guess what publisher can do? Stop skating that license is nothing, you own your copy of that game but you're not the sole proprietary owner of that game.
