I disagree. The opening shows each character has a unique setup, despite going in the same direction. They just don't TELL you about the motivation immediately. Circumstance puts them together, not Lightning. XIII is a lot of show, don't tell. Only Snow and Lightning share motivations, Serah. That immediately tells you this is no solo mission, despite Lightning's cold attitude against Snow.

Yeah, but that was years later. XIII itself doesn't treat her any differently than the others. And it's Lightning on the covers because, well obviously. She's visually stunning. There's no one else that could go on the cover. By the time LR rolls around the plot is entirely Lightning centric and for some people it's a bridge too far.

Perhaps, sure. But I thought that her cold demeanor and soft squishy center surrounded by a tough exterior was plenty interesting when you contrast with Serah. Both are impacted by loss/grief despite growing up together in the same home. If Lightning isn't interesting, then was Tidus? Or how about Cloud? Squall? Zidane? I would argue that Lightning has a more interesting character arc than many before her do. The fact is though that it's not a big arc that the whole story is focused around. It's just a simple, down to Earth human arc. Lightning stops treating the people who care about her coldly (Snow/Serah/Hope) and embraces her role as a samurai mother.

But that basically happens! Sazh helps save the world. This one of my favorite things about FFXIII, you can make the party whatever you want. You can defeat Orphan with Sazh as your party leader. If you want to feel like Sazh is the main character, then he can be. All you have to do is put him as the party leader.

Did you forget about her Eidolon awakening scene? Odin attacks Hope and puts himself between Lightning and him. The entire fight long, Odin is attacking Hope relentlessly. You must protect Hope in gameplay in order to defeat Odin. Lightning wrestles with whether or not to abandon Hope to save herself. Her moral dilemma is facing up her own selfishness and desire to abandon other people to save herself. It's an existential crisis, where she must put aside her selfish desire to save an innocent person who can barely defend themselves.

The scene that follows this, is Hope and Lightning resting when Hope dreams of Lightning and calls her mother and she smiles. Then right after in the Gapra Whitewood, the first scenes of the game where her arc is on display. She puts Hope in charge of their party, inspiring him to fight and protect others. But when she gives Hope her dagger, she opens up another moral dillemma for herself. Is her eagerness to fight (to protect Serah) leading others (Hope) down a violent and dark path?

She has to further grow in order to realize these mistakes and correct them which doesn't happen until around Chapter 6 I think.

Running around Rebirth, fighting and summoning awesome monsters and listening to incredible music, I felt the same emotions that Final Fantasy VIII gave to me. The desert areas specifically, transported me back to watching FFVIII on the CRT in my brothers room.

Finished Remake and hated all of the new ghost shit they added and the horrendous ending fight. Also found it to be a complete slog especially once you get to Shinra HQ there were so many cutscenes and interruptions to the gameplay I almost wanted to uninstall. It's not the same combat. There are many improvements and new combat mechanics, not just the special team attacks. There are unique combo skills and abilities, unique skill tree abilities, defensive and offensive, launching into the air, etc. At least a dozen new combat mechanics were added. And you can play as the cat man and the ninja girl as well not just Red. You also have Zack and Sephiroth at moments, and you can even mod them into your party on the PC or take Cloud out of the battle party!

It's impossible to know that. Team Asano did 3D Remakes for III and IV, but then instead of doing 3D Remakes for V or VI, they made Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler. Also 4 Heroes of Light but we don't talk about that. It's possible that after doing Remakes for I-III they'll make their own "Dragon Quest" just like they made their own V and their own VI. Hopefully they manage to think of something other than the Brave/Default system that they keep reusing though. I'm honestly tired of that shit.

I've used this example before, but I'll use it again: I fucking loved Zelda growing up. I even liked Wind Waker back when it was still cool to hate on Wind Waker. I didn't like Twilight Princess so much, and I didn't like Skyward Sword so much, but I didn't shitpost about them constantly, I just thought they weren't for me. I know lots of people who like TP for example. Then BotW came around, and I realized for sure that Zelda is no longer for me, and I stopped going to Zelda threads and I don't spend my entire life shitposting about Zelda. Like, I don't spend 24/7 creating Zelda threads and shitposting in Zelda threads about how they should stop doing open-world slop and should go back to the SNES or N64 era games, even though that is what I think. I've just accepted that Zelda isn't for me anymore and I've moved on.

/ffg/ needs to learn to accept that if they don't like the modern games, this series is no longer for you, and you need to move on. XII was Wind Waker, XIII was Twilight Princess, and XV was Skyward Sword, to compare it to my anecdote earlier. XVI is (You)r BotW. At some point, you must realize that the series isn't for you anymore, and you need to let go. You'll be happier and everyone around you will be happier as well if you can just move on and let go of what no longer serves you.

No one asked for my opinion about 7R, and I never complained about being unable to post it, but for what it's worth I liked it so far. It's about a 7/10 for me. I wish it was either actually the same or was actually different. Whispers suck, constant Sephiroth sucks, Cloud being a schizo for the entire game rather than a cool guy at first sucks and mischaracterizes him and demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of what the big reveal even is in the first place. It could have been identical to the original and it would have been better, and it also could have been crazy bananas different and it would have been better. What holds 7R back from being a "great" game rather than the "it's just good" game that it is, is its mishandling of the narrative via Whispers and shit. It's mostly carried by its combat and the memberberries.

XV's story is a meandering slog until the point where they ran out of budget and then it wraps everything up in a 2 hour rush. It's not particularly interesting or well-written.

XVI has some good moments sprinkled here and there and some kaiju battles if you're into that but it's way too long for what it is. If you ever played and liked the writing in XIV then you might like XVI's story.

The combat in both games boils down to just spamming your attack button and dodging/guarding occasionally.

You never need to do any of this. You can play most of the MSQ with literal NPC bots. There are some Trials that you cannot do with NPC bots quite just yet, and for those you just queue up with Duty Finder, and you get handed a random stack of people, and you do the Trial, maybe people say "gg" at the end, you all go your separate ways, and you never see or talk to each other ever again.

I feel like you'd be doing yourself a disservice not talking at all but XIV has been engineered to require as little social activity as possible. Main content is easy, searching for groups is completely automated, dungeons keep getting revamped to be doable with NPCs etc. Your only obligation will be teaming with other players for bosses but you can just coast along as a DPS and enjoy having no responsability whatsoever.
Still, it *is* very dreadful to play. Story pacing is super slow and classes are all boring to play until dozens of level. It does get better, but you shouldn't feel obligated to power through. The free trial is unlimited and go through now I believe up to the second expac, so just see if that interests you and drop it if it doesn't.

Moved back to US earlier this week and don't have gayming pc until end of July. What FF should I play in the meantime? I got an M1 macbook, a switch with FF12, and a PS4. Needed? No. Unnecessary? Not really. As it was said already, XV was all about Noctis and him accepted his duty as the chosen king which you get all in the base game without even the updates. I would say that the dlcs added more to the cast by expanding their characters, but they didn't do much for Noctis himself.

Which is exactly the point. Did you miss how the nights were growing longer? How desperate and hopeless the people have become? Noctis and his bros didn't realize how serious the situation was until Luna died. You even have a scene of them talking about how they realize now that they need to save world. They were pretty naive and thought that their journey was just about getting their home back.

I think it's because XV was the first mainline game that was more driven by the protagonist compared to the others which were more team based and the protagonist sometimes even get overshadowed by other characters (looking at you Tidus and Vaan).

Ironically, XVI tried to the same with Clive, but it didn't work for them.
