Year 1, don't worry too much about stats, just go for the most people to stack friendship, pick choices that give energy for even more friendship chances.
Year 2 you start to focus on stats. Repeating the same type will level it up, don't spread too thin
Summer you get instant Lv5, now is the time to patch up rough bits since you can't level facilities here
Year 3 you hopefully have hit your breakpoints and can bakushin your speed.

Skills are good too.
The green ones are always active if you meet the requirement, Lv1 gives 40 to a stat, Lv2 gives 60. Pay attention. Heart or Shoe for Stam or Speed
Skills that work for a specific style/distance only are twice as good as generic always good skills.

Step 1: borrow some whale's 7 Speed Spark with good grandparents as a parent by paying him 1,000 coins to breed his horsepussy
Step 2: Use one of your own horses with shitty grandparents BUT it has at least 2 speed sparks itself
Step 3: get a resulting horse with at least 1 or 2 speed sparks, NOW you use THIS one as your inheritance
The Inspiration tracking only goes back one generation, and you can inbreed with no penalties, so as long as you get a single horse with 2* speed sparks you can brute force 7* speed inheritance by borrowing a whale's horse and then also using a horse bred from that whale.

As an example, here's my breeding Bakushin. I got an Empress with 2* speed sparks but dogshit parents herself, borrowed a whale's mcqueen and then ended up with 7 speed sparks. The fact that my Empress's grandparents are dogshit with no speed is now irrelevant, since it only tracks back one generation. Now I take this Bakushin with 7 Speed sparks, and I can breed it with that same whale's mcqueen to end up with 15 speed sparks total
