Should I give Tenna away? I love him but he wants a new home...
The Old Man isn't literally Gerson back from the dead, he's an idealized version of Gerson based on the fountain maker's memories (Alvin made the fountain? Dess had Gerson as a teacher?). This isn't to say isn't to say the original Gerson was secretly terrible; probably had some flaws not seen with the Old Man but still pretty based overall. But that's not actually what I'm focusing on. What I'm focusing on is that to be a darkner literally in the image of someone's memories of a dead lightner made from the remains of said dead lightner sounds like an existential nightmare. Someone would be the perfect target to go unstable the way whoever was targeting Jevil and Spamton was. Under normal circumstances, a dustner like the old man would be an ideal target to be a shadow crystal recipient, but since Gerson is evidently the type of cool old guy who's lived a long enough life to not sweat the existential stuff like that, the old man was also too based and was able to just Tom Bombadil the Shadow Crystal

But this is pound for pound. I think Chapter 4 and 2 are better than UT, but UT is still a greater overall package. It just has more time, and a fully complete story to tell.
That's why it's so hard to judge which game is better.
It's like if all we had to go on in Undertale was the Ruins, Snowdin, and the first half of waterfall.
You're not going to be able to factor in the emotional highs of the Asriel fight, or Frisk comforting him afterwards. No pacifist ending to tie everything together nicely and make it all feel worth the journey.
if Chapter 4 is any indication, I know Toby will stick the landing, and make this game even more legendary than Undertale ever was.

But Chara likes it, he counts monsters, a malicious grin flashes across his face when he encounters an enemy, he tells you to keep going with rare phrases, and gets upset if he fails to kill Snowdrake. Chara shows his personality more actively in genocide, and Toby clearly wanted him to be associated with genocide. Considering all this, how can Chara be considered innocent? For one, on my first playthrough, I just didn't bother with the whole pacifism thing until a boss was too hard for me. I actually think that's a bit of an issue with the game. I didn't spare Muffet and Undyne because I wanted to be peaceful. I spared them because I just couldn't beat them for hours, and needed to end it.
I ended up killing flowey, and in my second playthrough, he just didn't show up at all until the true ending, which I think made it so much more impactful.
Then there's the occasional part that gets carried over through saves, like Toriel and Sans seemingly remembering things from your last run. That made it a lot of fun.
I even did the classic "I can spare Toriel if I lower her health enough. Oops, she's dead. better reset" only for flowey to call me out for that.
