I like blocking on vanguard where I have a 50% bigger window for it, and vanguard can build defensively.
I like fencing everywhere else because I don't want a singular timing fuckup to end a run (which can easily happen on absolute or hard siege, and has many times).

Either way, the fundamental issue is that many people feel like they need block to do noticeably adequate damage because mobs are outright too beefy and weapon stats are just silly. The artificer block chain sword being objectively better than any of the relic chain swords is a pathetic negligence on saber's part. Most fencing weapons have shit native damage or speed.

Despite being on this website for 20 years, I will never understand some people's insistence on making being a contrarian their entire personality. There are use cases for both fencing and block, and you are allowed to like one, both or nothing.

I've actually beaten wave 15 on hard a few times, but not really enjoying the mode to be honest. I think it's a good attempt at increasing enemy density but you can only get 10 termies / disc tzaangors + 3 helbrutes at once before it's just "nah, i'll go back to doing ops".

This would be the case for pretty much every game that has you fight something besides pure imperial guard or chaos cultists and doesn't have you play as a terminator.
Most factions have front line troops that have pretty good odds of killing a space marine on their own.
Played through armageddon and the battlefields were getting too lethal for even terminator squads to gain and maintain veterancy.

Block gives you a mild damage advantage for melee attacks if you have the extra skill required to play around its very awkward play style.
The issue being you're probably not doing that much less damage overall with fencing because the melee in this game is designed around constant gunstrikes which do a lot of damage and aren't counted in your post-game damage stats.

Instead of a parry stopping the enemy attacks, you're supposed to block twice giving you armor and then a boosted hit. What actually happens is you eat shit, because losing your CC on parry to gain some piss weak armor and a minor damage boost every 2 blocks is worthless. They were originally just used for mark 5 because mark 5 was an amalgamation of cost and time saving measures, the bonding studs were one of them.
Higher quality suits of armor use techniques in production that allow the armor layers to be held together by means other than bonding studs. Bonding studs are a sign of aesthetic preference or bad armor.

The trick is that if you land a perfect block, you have no cooldown until you can do it again
So if you learn the timings you can parry any number of attacks
It's harder, but if you succeed you are rewarded with a massive improvement in damage
Of course, they bugged the whole weapon family so they've lost a 3rd of that damage when following up on a block so combined with all the other bugs the weapon type is starting to fall behind parrying
One of the big things about block was that you could easily start attacking and have the target executable so fast that enemies just couldn't attack you before you had finished the job, but I'd have to check if that's still possible

Trying to improve my Word Bearer, would appreciate some suggestion from fellow sons of Lorgar. At first I wanted to paint them pre-heresy but gray and gold doesn't work without runes to break up the monotony.

So how do the guardsmen work? Do they replenish at any point? If I buy two levels in a row (like say 40 and 50 guardsmen) is it cumulative or do you only get 10 more guards?

Guardsmen don't all come out immediately, whether you buy 40 or 80 the maximum number that will be in play will be 20

They'll come out somewhere random whenever someone is killed which is inefficient

They also fail to kill Minoris, their damage needs to be buffed and they to summon all 40, 50 or 80 of them at one time

If they're afraid toasters will get rekt then have them spawn everywhere on the map

Ngl guardsmen are pretty useful as distractions. Majoris would spawn camp these guys, and you can drop a melta to remove a lot of them instantly. I almost always get 60 of them as they can provide much needed distraction in the later waves.

Block is still faster by a noticeable margin (2 seconds in the clip, and also the fencing clip I got wasn't perfect because I accidentally touched the target with a swing while clearing out everyone around it)
But it's no longer the insane time difference it used to be
Basically you can still make block work, and for those who just prefer how it feels over fencing it's still going to produce results, but it's nowhere near as clear a difference as it was before this update
Saber needs to get on these bugs
(I'm pretty sure the phasing through bug has gotten worse now like some anons were saying, while trying to find a good fencing example I had a lot of gaunts just phase through my perfect parries which has never happened before)

Another thing is block doesn't remove your ability to gunstrike. The whip warrior can be so easily destroyed if you do this. Block, block, back step (usually will be a perfect dodge), block, gunstrike, and then finish the enemy off.

Heavy bolt pistol (non damage variant) will do 138 or so gunstrike damage when the parry bonus is active, which would put a warrior at 170 health. You can then very easily finish it off. And if you're running proven efficiency, which is a 30% boost, the damage is about 180. It's a huge boon to your ttk using a block weapon.

Duelist won't help much. An ann claimed that it only adds frames after the normal activation duration, so the startup time is the same.
That said, I've found it perfectly usable. The only time it has prevented me from perfect parrying an enemy that needed parrying has been when lictors do a surprise attack out of nowhere, and even then I can still get it as an imperfect block.

I think this is the biggest problem I have with siege mode. At higher waves, there are so many enemies and their damage gets buffed so high that if you want to be able to afford the things that actually allow you to win, you need reliable healing.
Being the only class that can provide consistent healing, vanguard is absolutely mandatory and it makes the mode inherently unfun because you start each run already kind of miffed at your team for forcing you into that role when you want to play something else.

Healing every majoris and extremis execution really helps. Teammates being able to heal via extremis executions is also super handy because it means you don't have to actively be around them like the bulwark for a heal. The sniper was surprisingly handy, he'd stun extremis enemies for executions and would cloak and beeline to us for revives.

Here's my dream mod for siege mode. You start off as generic marines, with just a knife, bolt rifle, and bolt pistol. There are 2 drop pods holding 6 random weapons, 3 primary and 3 side arms, as well as 3 random melee weapons to pick from.

You can get points by doing objectives and personal challenges as usual, but there will also be options to upgrade your weapons damage (perhaps all unique attacks should be unlocked by default).

Each wave you get to pick a random class perk from EVERY class (so perhaps some perks need to be reworked), and on the fourth and eighth wave you get to pick a team and signature perk.

Ideally the wave should start off with easier difficulty to account for low level gears, and starting from wave 5 they are at absolute difficulty. I'm not a big fan of endless so ending at wave 15 seems like a good idea.

I'll probably pitch this idea to some modders in the modders discord. The game is perfect for this kind of roguelite gameplay.

SMG has an insanely low time to kill by magdumping into a warrior’s head at close range, IIRC the lowest in the game, and way faster than your melee weapon, including the chainsword. You bring the Carbine because you can put a Majoris into execute in something like 1-1.5 seconds by magdumping it at point blank. It’s well-worth the trade off of losing damage at range, and even then you can just pull out your heavy bolt pistol if you need to shoot at a zoanthrope. And if you really care about long range damage, just use stalker or plasma. Carbine has been buffed yeah, but that just took it from “totally trash” to “somewhat trash but still worse than every other primary.” It’s not even a jack-of-all trades, it’s a “shit-at-all-trades” gun. It also combos off cannon punch the dodge attack. Against majoris, you can cannon, hold down the attack for instant charge follow-up, then do one more charge attack at level 2 charge instead of level 3 to put majoris into execute.

i wish tactical had assaults restore armor on gunstrike, because tactical is the squishiest class, everyone else has good defensive options except tactical, you have to play aggressively, in melee, to get some level of defense, and you have nothing against ranged enemies, like rubric marine and devourers

Given the difficulty of killing things once their HP goes up and there are 5 of them attacking simultaneously, I'm probably not going to Hard for a very long time. Anything that triggers off extremis executions is worth many times more than usual in siege
Dreadnought is probably overpriced and ineffective (poor reliability on its targeting choices) but if you're going to summon it, wait until a terminus wave and make sure the terminus enemies spawn before or shortly after buying it
Tactical's stockpile perk makes grenade purchases unnecessary, vanguard's heal perk covers the team's need for stimms, and every class except assault can cover their own ammo requirements with the right perk equipped
Secondary objectives are a big source of extra points, make sure to complete them before the wave ends or you'll miss out
Every full sector clear gives you one of the new weapon skins (red, white, or blue or for most melee weapons bronze, silver and gold); you get a random colour for a random weapon that your class has access to when you finish
XP gain from siege is garbage, level classes in operations instead

Dreadnought is really hit or miss in siege. I've seen it spawn and immediately delete two helbrutes before raping the shit out of everything else, and then I've seen it spawn and just follow enemies around instead of attacking them.

Did i get meme'd about the artificier block powerfist ? I've seen people gush about how you can one shot with it. But its so slow i can NEVER hit anything, i just get fucking staggered out of every single move. I guess i need one of the no stagger talents to make it work ?

There's literally a talent on the weapon tree itself that makes you immune to stagger while charging. You should also grab the prestige perk for assault that lets you ignore stagger after blocks/parries. If you build it to one shot majoris then you can still definitely lose all your armor but the follow up execute at least will recover any contested health.

no the play style is to roll slop around until you get a good angle. i dont use the purple myself, i use the yellow block and you can hit break points to one shot minoris with a 2x charge attack which is fun. to me the aoe stagger is more than enough to kill everything you dont have to one shot

Thunder hammer bulwark does an assload of damage, but the tradeoff of losing really good perks and your shield without gaining any mobility to make you less of a sitting duck makes it a meme at best.
I had some fun playing it in ruthless, but then a bunch of devourer cannon warriors spawned and it stopped being fun.

Absolute still isn’t hard enough that you need max level characters, I just leveled assault from 1-4 on Absolutes only, with nothing more than gold weapons and a prestige perk or two

Sure it’s challenging and you might lose every now and then, but if the alternative is falling sleep on Ruthless/Lethal, I’ll take it. I want to have fun while leveling characters. Leveling weapons is probably the only reason I would ever drop the difficulty, but the only gun I don’t have maxed is the auto bolt rifle and I’m not touching that piece of shit

I tried doing it on level 1 vanguard with white weapons and a gold heavy pistol. It's been alright so far but I'm getting carried by people with actual weapons.

Also I fucking hate the class anyways. The grapple feels so wonky to use, enemies getting to close to use it, it picking enemies behind the one I'm trying to execute, or teammates killing my target after I've grappled wasting a charge.

It seems good when it works but it requires my team to know I'm doing it and for the game to not fuck me over. Like if I get targeted by the major or extreme then I literally can't grapple them as they stay too close from attacking. And if I get then into execute and back off my team mates kill them first. It's like wasting half my perks.

I've only maxed out assault. But now I'm not sure which class to level next since I thought I would enjoy vanguard.

I enjoyed Vanguard as literally just a walking block chainsword with decent guns and a gap-closer. Prestiging him from 1-4 wasn’t bad at all, he comes online with perks pretty easy. I found the whole “grapple explosion” build too clunky to make work in tough situations. But some people like it, so more power to them.

I know. You can lock onto enemies to see their life. And even with the grapple refund signature a team mate can kill them before I execute while I'm on my way with the grapple and fuck me over. I had this one sniper who would do it non stop.

Just bought the game, how do I train with melee in this game without shitting it up for others?

The parry system in the campaign is different from Operations and Siege mode.

I'm getting hosed with either Balanced, Fencing or Block and would like to train in all three.

You should never ever ever ever ever ever used balance, it’s the worst of both worlds
Fencing is what 90% of players use, it’s safe and easy, see attack, press parry, get gunstrike
Block is harder and finicky but gets a little extra damage because of it, and block weapons usually have higher base damage than fencing weapons
I initially hated block and couldn’t make it click but once I committed to it I got it, now I don’t use anything but block because I just find it fun

ranged enemies might be fun in this game if they were ever designed around suppressing you so they can close the gap instead of playing keep away as much as physically possible when you're already trying to navigate through a sea of melee dudes
