Answering both of the questions, Divine Smite is the AoE clear version of Smite, which is why it has higher area damage, while regular Smite has higher melee hit damage. It also lacks the aura aspect, because if otherwise nobody would use regular Smite. Smite's aura gives flat damage, which is why it is used by armour stackers, which scale from aura effect. Link Vaal Smite to more duration and you are fine for map bosses.
