I would take characters to Master, stop playing for a month, forget everything I learned then take another character to master and the cycle would repeat. I couldn't settle on a character, I like too many of them.
but I wanted to get proficient at a character, invest time in it.
So I started sorting out candidates for a main.
I like a lot of characters visually, but if I were to settle on a main, I would need to really enjoy it's gameplay.
I like characters with unique tools that lead into unpredictable situations, I like comboing off throws, I like versatile characters.
The most likely candidates were Metera, Cag and Eustace.
Eustace ended up fitting the best for what I was looking for. It helps that Eustace has a bunch of autistic niggas who look really cool with him like Mirri or Insurgent.
Eustace's only flaw is that he's a male. Picrel is what he should look like, he'd be the perfect character.
Eustace hasn't 'clicked' with me yet but I'm still having a lot of fun. It will come, sooner or later.

I do baby mode only so the Skill/Unique/Throw row is there so I can press all three at the same time to either get Skybound Art or Super Skybound Art. Dash placement puts it on my pinky which makes 66L easy (important) and I do various strengths of skill with thumb on Skill plus finger on L/M/H. Works for me. I never use the throw button for throwing, you can use L+M for throw and that's what I tend to use.

A dodge is just a move that makes you invincible for a certain number of frames. Like a DP does but without any attack attached to it. It allows you to avoid attacks rather than block them, but you can be grabbed out of it.
A roll is like a dodge that moves forward and has less invincibility. Generally beats out projectiles and some attacks but loses to lows and throws.
Also, using the guard button is handy sometimes because it automatically protects you from crossups. But you can't throw tech while using it.
You can go browse Dustloop and get the basics. I think the in-game tutorial is pretty good too.

I don't have much advice to give when it comes to fireballs They tend to have a lot of recovery so predictable fireballs can be jumped over as a read to punish otherwise you can spotdodge them to gain yourself some time as there can only be 1 projectile on the screen so your opponent has to wait for it to go off screen before he can throw another.
You need to use 66L a lot more the game isn't really playable without it. i think Anila can do 66L>fL>RS to combo out of it. I don't know if she has alternatives or what frametraps you can get out of it so you will have to look it up or try things in training mode.
