The earlier sequence of threads had died out with Halo 4.
The first iteration was actually on /v/ during Reach's time. Someone else can probably isolate those dates more accurately but we do have some collages from then.

This is a strawman misdirection.
Bungie was, is, and always will be an overambitious studio who's aspirations get the better of them time and time again. That was as true as it was with Halo as it was with Destiny and now Marathon.
Halo and Halo 2, as they are, were the result of that ambition being kept in check by Microsoft, which created the idea circumstance that led to two timeless classics. After that, Bungie took their foot off the gas with 3 and Reach to avoid the stressful situation of overworking to meet a deadline and the results speak for themselves. With Reach especially they were a fully independent company and it was their worst game in the series.
Trying to boil this down to "bungie good, Microsoft bad" is a foolish oversimplification and misunderstanding of history.

It's probably because Halo is historically so tied to the Xbox brand that even now when arguably most of us play on PC, we are very willing to work with Xbox players because in many ways Halo is Xbox.
The absolute worst time for this general was around 2018-2019 when MCC came out on PC and we were swarmed with the rudest most incompatible shitters that tried to completely run the show ("we're coming home") and wouldn't shut up about how the classic games suddenly needed to be overhauled to play more like counter strike.
The current PC players (like me admittedly) are much more chill because we pretty much almost all came from Xbox.
I know /hg/ gets a bad wrap at times, but we really are one of the comfier generals for this reason imo.

they had to offset the fact that you can't rush with it

Sprint was always a redundant feature to have on console. They basically just ripped the run button from pc games and slapped it on the controller. You don't need it because you have the thumbstick with a movement speed curve. If you have ADS, you don't need sprint because the hipfire accuracy while not sprinting is already a massive downgrade from aiming. As a side note, ADS in its common form is really stupid if immersion is the goal. But ADS does basically the opposite of sprint. Forcing the player to move slowly for more accuracy by pressing a button instead of just moving the stick half way. It's incredibly inefficient. PC games like counter strike have the walk/crouch button for that purpose but that's because you don't have a thumbstick on mouse and keyboard. Call of duty style controls effectively have both a walk and run button rather than having an always run option and only a single walk/run button be necessary. And the worse part is they don't even make use of the thumbstick for that purpose. Smart devs, such as og bungie, would cut these features, realizing the controller makes them redundant.

tldr Thumbstick is effectively 7 buttons compressed into 1 but no one makes use of it

it's sad that halo has become a nobody in the gaming industry

What was the real reason for adding sprint and clamber in the first place? I think anons are falling into the trap of having to explain why sprint and clamber should be removed, but there wasn't a particularly strong reason for them being added in the first place besides change for the sake of change or following trends. What improvements have either of these made to Halo? It's more actions that you have to perform (or watch, in the case of clamber), but does it make the game more fun?

Sprint has more utility now with slide being added (along with dropslide, for extra mobility), and canceling clamber lets you peak over tall ledges while staying mostly behind cover...but again, do these new actions (and the new types of player behavior they introduce or encourage) actually make the game more fun? And then combine that with the more long-range combat than older Halos, and all the different equipment. These things definitely have changed the pacing and predictability of fights. But were these things that needed to be changed from older Halos? I guess it depends on the player. A lot of players seem to like Halo Infinite's combat, but there's also a big group of players that prefer the older, slower Halos, so now you have this big split in the community that will never be completely satisfied wherever the next game goes, thanks to these sweeping generational changes. If Bungie never added sprint or armor abilities, I wonder if 343 would have. 343 has the excuse of Reach, but would they have had the balls to add sprint themselves?

I don't want to get sucked into a back and forth like the other anon, but basically the discussion above with anon having to explain why sprint or clamber should be removed. He's being told to explain himself, but Bungie and 343 didn't explain very well why those mechanics were added in the first place. Mostly just vague things like 'breeding smarter combat' or giving players more choice/options, according to the vidoc. I think rather than having to defend why you think they should be removed, it might be better to have someone who likes them to explain why they're good mechanics to have, since they weren't originally in the older games, and those games were fun without them.

Something that was introduced to Halo was destructible vehicles. It looks and feels really good to blow up vehicles. It's solid, satisfying feedback for the one shooting the vehicle, and it's fun to experience even when you're the one being killed in the vehicle. Trying to play CE's BTB and not being able to blow up a Scorpion doesn't feel very satisfying. Meanwhile, something like clamber forces you to sit through an animation (or cancel it) rather than just being able to jump higher. Maps are now made with clamber in mind, so you're forced to use it or find ways to avoid it like the skill jumps. But on a base level, it's more tedious than just being able to jump high enough to clear that ledge. It doesn't make the game more fun.

Sprint was just user research I think? All the big console games used sprint by 2010 so it would feel like a missing feature to new Halo players. The deeper implications of how sprint affects the design doesn't matter.
Similarly Halo 2 was the biggest FPS on console so user research dictated that Halo 3 should be similar.
Halo was heavily influenced by user research after Halo 2. MS built the largest user research facility in gaming during Halo 2's development.
The entire franchise post-H2 can be used to test how accurate Xbox's user research actually is at any given point in time.

We never really see or hear much about this. It would be interesting to see a full vidoc about it. The few clips they did show in the vidoc were very few, like with how the player missed a turn and one of the devs felt really bad about it. The dismantle notifications moved from top-right to mid-right and they added a lot more visual noise to the dismantle notifications with effects beginning over half the screen away from dismantle notifications. I think the idea is that morons will still dismantle something but the loud noise and flashy visual effects will spook them away from dismantling everything.

I -do- understand the idea of filling a spin-off title with ideas you were barred from during the trilogy because Griesemer and Max were adamant about certain details as gameplay designers, especially with Halo 3 still going strong.
However, even Marcus has moved on and seen that non-ability gameplay aged better (he highlights 3 but it naturally applies to CE and 2). He should've pushed for abilities to be in an alternative playlist and not outright replace non-ability gameplay, even in a spin-off.
Now we'll see if Pierre can finally take one of the right paths that should've been taken after the feedback Reach got. For all we know he wants to and he'll still get mandated to do the contrary. Completely up in the air.

Normally I'd agree, and its one of the reasons I didn't like the genre at first. But bunny jumping while holding forward in this particular game makes you go faster than just running. It's a little harder to do in older arena shooters because you have to do it at an angle and turn the mouse in a specific rhythm but you still build momentum the same way, and if you can keep building that momentum and not hit an obstacle/wall, you can really go flying through these maps. In games like call of duty you feel really heavy and there's almost no point to jumping except to throw people's aim off, but with older arena shooters, they really let you go all out on horizontal speed. You get massive verticality with the launchpads and rocket jumping, so in some ways its more mobile than Halo despite having a lower jump height. Halo's slower pace is perfect for vehicle combat.

The trend in games lately has been adding more mobility options, so now we have stuff like slide, sprint, dodging, and other abilities like teleportation or grapple shotting, so they're not as slow paced as Call of Duty or Counterstrike anymore. You doing way more actions now. But even during the older arena shooter era, you did more than just point and click. Most weapons are slow projectiles, so you had to do more leading and thinking ahead of where your opponents were going to be, and with the faster speed, the more you had predict into the future than Halo or Call of Duty, especially when you lost sight of them. And there was more emphasis on map control and map knowledge with the power weapons and health/armor spawns. A lot of that difficulty was removed with recharging shields/health, and now they've added weapon respawn timers. This part was just to explain why the jumping isn't just low, and that it actually builds mobility. I could have shortened it to the first sentence, but the others were to cover Quake. The game in the webm is a newer arena shooter with slightly different and easier movement mechanics (like holding forward while jumping to build momentum). The older arena shooters require more input, so that's why I added the extra info and what he probably would have played and disliked about the jump height.

There's the map resource denial since all the pickups have a timer, so you can keep the other player/team from having health/armor by snagging them first and getting bonus health/armor. With Halo, you can get back to full shields just by taking cover so you only really need to worry about securing power weapons. And even with the newer Halos, it's not like you need to rapidly press different button combos like a fighting game, so even using abilities is not particularly difficult in terms of execution, even with stuff like drop-slide or skill jumps. And since the movement is slower you have more time to get into position. Trying to simplify arena shooters to point and clicking is a bit disingenuous.
