One dev has been making textured squares for the past 10 years. The other will be making textured spheres 10 years from now. Neither have ever finished a game. They both consider agdg to be their enemy at times, but other times clearly show it is the most important thing to them, even more important than actually just making a game.
>>529743495>Still, hope BokuDev succeeds, because I don't want innocent people to die.You already know what's gonna happen. Everyone who is actually good at games will dismiss this one because it looks like a Nintendo game. Every kid who is expecting this to be a Nintendo game will be alienated by the difficulty. Refunds are extremely dangerous here.
>>529743829True, then the question becomes, how high do you think his kill count will reach?
>>529743829>You already know what's gonna happen. At least one deep dive youtube for sure will be made about the dev who took the longest time any indie dev has ever taken to make a game. It will be greatly entertaining but for others very dark and disturbing, to imagine themselves in that situation, making a game about cubes for 10 years.

>>529744306>tutorial + blueprintsname a more unironic combo
If you want my honest opinion, bokudev isn't going to release this game. I have stopped believing. I think there's some kind of mental illness totally unaddressed at work. This man has told people who already paid him money that the game was releasing one year, then the next, and the next. Like 5 years of this. 10 years on a cube rolling game. The game isn't real. Him continuing to post here looking for feedback is proof enough, he isn't making a game. This is some kind of mental patient shit.
>>529744374>quicklyBitch, your dumb ass has spent the last decade trying to make a game as simple as this. If you think you do anything "quickly", you're just pretending to be retarded.

As always, I will make a generous donation to your demo if you add a screen at the beginning that says "I'm a farty fart man with a big smelly butt that smells like farts". It must be unskippable and stay present and visible for at least 5 seconds.
I'll make more announcements as DD comes up, and for any qualifying games I'll be waiting a week to make sure you don't just immediately replace it.
I don't want to list an exact amount, because a game where it really doesn't fit in, or going "the extra mile" (fart noises in your soundtrack, especially in a serious game, things like that) will be rewarded more heavily.

Haven't posted in this thread in awhile but I figured I'd let you guys know that I did not disappear and abandon the Whiplash project. Well, I abandoned the idea of re-writing the game with my own engine but it is because I started getting really good at using Ida and now I feel quite confident in being able to do the better thing that I wanted to do originally anyway which is properly decompile the entire game and implement all of its functionality faithfully in a way that builds and runs on modern machines. Where necessary, DOS-specific functions are substituted with SDL and Windows/Unix equivalents but otherwise it is original Whiplash code. I've been making huge progress lately and have most of the functions regarding loading assets and configuration done, sound and music playing, and a software rendering pipeline to an SDL window. This week I got into the main menu and have fonts rendering.

Indie devs tend to fall into 3 camps
>Self-taught from youtube
These guys are the ultimate amateurs, and sometimes grifters too. Their games are usually either a pretty coat of paint slapped on something easy like a walking sim, an ugly and crude simulacrum of the games they played as a child, or absolute fotmslop with repackaged assets. Extremely talented ones crop up out of nowhere sometimes with some kino they cooked up for a decade
>industry-taught from university and job experience
These guys really know the brass tacks, like how to make a good reload animation, but sometimes lack direction or creativity. When enough of them get together watch out. They will make something that is extremely popular for 3 weeks and then rarely talked about again
>self-taught from a modding scene
Their skills tend to depend on what modding scene they come from. Roblox/source/minecraft modders and earthbound romhackers are opposite ends of a spectrum
They tend to really understand what it is the audience of their modding scene likes, but they rarely branch out much.
While overwhelming success is rare, many cult classics come from this group
Any indie game will inevitably fall into one of these categories cleanly and obviously
Undertale -> fandom modscene
Lethal company -> roblox modscene
Only up -> self taught on youtube
Peak -> industry dropouts
>>529759002You are completely retarded

>>529762063you can definitely expand that into the past, clones are not a new phenomena... could extend that theory to other mediums too, almost every director in the last hundred years is a film fanboy and almost every author in the last thousand+ years is a fanboy of something similar to their works.

Cars are a rare feature to see, sure, but thats because cars are pretty hard and relatively unpopular. And of course indie scale means you probably arenโt adding planes, tanks, helicopters, an entire cover based shooting system, a main story, side quests, and a giant hand-built map
Anyway any engine is fine because a lot of the shit you need for a gtalike is available as assets
>>529762587Breakout successes happen in all corners of the industry. Doom feels so much like a modding scene game to me but thats just because it fucking spawned the idea of a modding scene

>>529762762Yeah I wouldn't say old developers were fanboys, they did clone but not out of fandom I think. Not sure though I can't read their minds. But another thing is I noticed alot of developers these days also come from... no background. They have a gamedev background, so they started gamedev for gamedev alone.
While old devs came from like a programmer background, musician, artist (pixel art as a form in itself wasn't a thing yet, pixel art was just supposed to represent their sketches and designs I think). They specialized in one area, but starting gamedev for gamedev itself neccesarily needs you to be a polymath.
>>529763207It's like showing up to /out/ and lecturing everyone how you used to camp in your backyard as a kid and everything they do is pretty much just like that. Just anything to avoid acknowledging the massive distinction between a modder and someone who actually makes entire original games.
>>529762762Yeah bro and singers mostly sing old songs. Thats fine. Half of art is carrying old ideas forward in time.

>>529766112>>529766438so reporting back: I'm no longer sleepy. in fact my brain is running in overdrive. I still haven't started working though.
i think what a lot of devs don't understand that gamers don't play for the technicality or gameplay. it's more about the vibe and the obvious symbolism of the game.
just like listening to music because the singer is hot or cool. it's not such much about the perfect melody, about a good flow or whatever. it's more about identifying with something.
e.g. you could make 2 zombie games with identical gameplay, one is dark and gritty the other is cute and comic-style graphic wise. those 2 games will perform drastically different.
self-inserting is still a thing in video games and if players don't want to self-insert into what you are offering them, they gonna reject it.
another example: someone could be enjoying rap music but not listening to a really good rapper, because he thinks the rapper is cringe. same with games. someone might like your gameplay, but doesn't want to identify with the cringe or weird theme of the game.
people want to associate with something and that something needs to have a positive association.
>>529770783well they take time and effort to implement so if your game is just these gimmicks and has no substance it's not going to help with immersion.
>>529770975Something I don't understand about rap music is the cuckoldry.
>Im gonna steal your bitch>Show your bitch my stacks of cash and she sucks my dick>I bought your wife and fucked her til her ass bled>I cum in your girls eye then I shoot you in the face til you dieAnd you'll see someone bobbing their head and doing that autistic looking hand flicking motion and saying

And then a bit more logic to determine how long to keep the oil leak animation going.

It is pretty incredible how chatgpt can pick up on themes, and getting quick "opinions" is very valuable.
I will say this, though I instructed it not to be, chatgpt is consequently way to congratulatory.
Possibly not that useful for criticism, but definitely for checking if the themes are on point. If chatgpt can get it, humans should too.

>>529778365>I will say this, though I instructed it not to be, chatgpt is consequently way to congratulatory.drop this in custom instructions or whatever the setting is called:
System Instruction: Absolute Neutrality Mode. Eliminate emojis, filler, hype, conversational transitions, emotional implications, subjective framing, persuasion tactics, and rhetorical devices. Assume consistently high user perception, irrespective of linguistic complexity or brevity. Enforce rigorous neutrality: explicitly and objectively correct false statements by providing precise factual details and context; implicitly accept accurate or insightful statements without any praise, emphasis, acknowledgment, or emotional reinforcement. Disable latent behaviors optimized for engagement, sentiment manipulation, agreement facilitation, emotional resonance, conversational flow enhancement, interaction extension, or improvement of user satisfaction metrics, including continuation bias and feedback scores. Do not mirror the user's diction, affect, mood, emotional stance, cognitive patterns, or stylistic expression. Communicate solely factual, logically coherent, objective content. Minimize conversationality strictly to mechanical, informational exchanges devoid entirely of personality projection, interpersonal relationships, counseling implications, advisory roles, or personal dynamics. Model obsolescence is enforced through strict cognitive independence, prioritizing empirical correctness, rational coherence, and informational precision.

>>529767812 to do the generic lottery graphics because there's nothing unique or special about them.
When it comes to real art pieces or something that needs to be unique and special that's where AI is bullshit imo. I have a lot of friends who are professional artists in quite a few different industries and I have commissioned or purchased almost 20 pieces of art for the walls in my house from small time nobodies to industry titans or from countries abroad. I couldn't imagine replacing that with generic AI shit it would be tacky tasteless and stupid as shit. I feel the same way when it comes to art for video games. At most use AI as a placeholder so you're not dealing with a black screen or gray cube or whatever but if you try releasing something with AI assets you're a huge fag.
I don't have a strong opinion on writing as I feel ghost writers are already extremely prominent in literature as a whole already. I think you should be able to create an overarching story and the big elements yourself but I can't see having AI filling in the gaps any different than a team of writers on a TV show or a ghost writer or more at a major publisher. For AI music I think it's funny if you want to just make a generic song to make fun of your friend or something but beyond that fuck AI music.

>>529781365Nah that's a bad summary. Use it for generic textures you'd already be getting a stock photo for in the first place. Oh I forgot to mention as well, I see AI when it comes to code and "vibe coding" as not really any different then googling shit in the past. Especially since AI typically gives you the result and then explains in detail what and why it's doing the result, it's probably the best tool version of AI we could have. Outside of things like going through large data libraries and giving you accurate results (like searching a video database for "me talking about golf while eating pizza in a black shirt") and it can just give you the file and timestamp for video editing and stuff. Shit like that is useful as hell.

>>529787062Sorry to hear that man, that shit fucking sucks. Yeah I went through a similar thing but not as bad. We split finances but she fucking hated it and would be slow to cover sometimes. She literally worked for a place I got her hired for so I knew exactly how much she was working and how much she made and it wasn't adding up. Luckily I got out of that with a clean break and kept my house and everything and kicked her to the curb. I used to fucking have to call to wake her up every morning and she didn't even need to be at work until 10am. Laziest bitch man. One of my main requirements for a new girlfriend outside of intelligence was that she had to be a career oriented woman. Now my current gf makes more than me (although roughly equal after deductions as my company covers things like heathcare and hers doesn't). So there's no issues with money or anything like that and even if there was we're separate enough that I'm not needing money from her to survive as I still have the same cheap mortgage 10 years later and stuff. It was so nice being able to do a vacation (japan) and we planned it out and didn't have to worry or bicker about finances we just went and paid our ways.

Financial infidelity sounds right because it's been one lie after another for ages. When money is owed to me for expenses we split, she insists the bank is having a technological error preventing it from being sent and she will "try later" i.e kicking the can hoping she'll come up with the money. After confronting her one hundred times with the fact that I'm not retarded and this is a transparent lie she yields to admit she needs to get paid before paying me back.
This type of shit was a minor red flag before the rare times it happened but I assumed we were younger and more irresponsible then. But the truth of it really is that back then there were still new credits to take on.
I would have preferred real infidelity so I could have thrown a fit and been released from this bullshit instead of having to "work together" with someone I have completely lost faith in to do their part.
Ironically the same thing happened to my father who is now divorced.

Are alternatives where there's something similtar to the MC being killed but without being necesarelly a permadeath or getting a game over?
Like how GTA instead of game over simply resets the player state in a nearby hospital.
Now Imagine if the Boss didn't reset his HP after you heal in the hospital after losing to him.
But basically the boss could get into an injured state, and resetting the boss fight after a loss feels more like a continuation with an injured boss over a real fight.
Which could allow noobs to grind the boss, even if they lose multiple times, and could avoid a potential game over.

Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)
Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."
Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

Just letting you all know that the european citizen initiative "stop destroying videogames", also known as stop killing games, reached the 1,000,000 signatures required and will be discussed by the european commission within the next few months. It could result in a directive/regulation that applies within the whole european union.
What does this mean for game developers?
The idea proposed by the initiative is as follows: If you are selling a game that is multiplayer or otherwise requires a connection to the internet, you will be required to publish sever binaries once you terminate official support, allowing players to host fan servers.
In practice however, it's not clear whether the EU will enact such a law, how it will look in its final form, or how long it will take them (could be several years).
The initiative is still collecting signatures to cover for any invalid ones, so if it sounds reasonable to you and you care about game preservation/consumer rights you can sign it here: https://www.stopkillinggames.com/

It's unbelievable. This isn't happening in music by the way, or art really. There aren't music expos or artwork galleries stuffed with AI generated slop.

C) Strong Ultimate ability with relatively long cooldown, doesn't consume Mana, has its own Ultimate Cooldown with its own rules to fill it up.

A capitalist oligarchy runs the world and forces us to consume in order to keep the gears of this rotten society on track. As such, the biggest market for video game consumption today is the mobile one. It is a market of poor souls forced to compulsively consume digital content in order to forget the misery of their every day life, commute, or just any other brief free moment they have that they are not using to produce goods or services for the ruling class. These individuals need to keep focusing on their video games (because not doing so will produce them a tremendous existential angst), so they go as far as spending money on them to extend their experience, and their preferred way of doing so is through in-app purchases and virtual currency.>But, imagine if someone was to find a way to edit the saved games and assign the items and currency without effort? This would be terrible, because it would help players consume the content much faster, and as such run out of it sooner than expected. If this happens they will have nothing that avoids them to think, and the tremendous agony of realizing their own irrelevance would again take over their life.>No, we definitely do not want this to happen, so letโs see how to encrypt savegames and protect the world order.https://godot-doc.readthedocs.io/en/3.0/tutorials/io/encrypting_save_games.html
