Any tips on doing better? I'm struggling to stand a chance in ura finale with anyone but bakushin and I can't manage to get even a b+ let alone better rank on any unit.
I focus on friendship early, try to use a lot of wit to restore energy, pick options that give or retain energy and I try to wait a while before buying skills but I still struggle a lot
For short/mile I usually run 3/4 speed, a wit and one or two powers
For longer horses I usually run 2 speed, a wit and 1/2 power and stam.
It feels especially hard to try and balance longer race horses because I feel like they need a high amount of everything

Stamina is basically max HP, if youre going turbo fast by the time you run out of HP youre far enough ahead that you'll win anyway on sprints and a lot of miles. Gold skills are great but if youre finishing the race with like 40% HP left thanks to your super expensive Stamina skill that's 39% more than you need so those skill points would have more impact by making you faster
350 stamina is the guideline for URA finale Mile Stamina, 250 for sprint. You'll get sprint one by accident just doing your friendship training early and random events, Mile you just need to do it once or twice at camp and you should be lit

speed determines your top speed and being fast helps with being fastest. power determines acceleration and the horse's ability to get past other horses blocking/crowding them. wit determines quite a few things but, most importantly, it is the probability with which your skills proc when the conditions are fulfilled. guts is the most useless stat, it acts as a secondary but less important stamina check. the general rule of thumb is to get around 300 guts, 400 for longs.
with all that said, the process is quite simple:

the first step is to make sure your build will get to the required stamina + acquire the recovery skills needed. that doesn't mean spam stamina for the first 15 turns, it means to make sure you get there by the end-screen of the career.

Sakura Bunshin (speed) is very good when higher level. it's usable at 1LB.
Super Creek (stamina) is the best support card in this current rotation but it only really shines at higher LB. it's still usable at 0LB since it provides a consistent way to get the best recovery skill (swinging maestro).
Daiwa (wit) is a budget Fine Motion.
Amazon (power) is a strong SR once maxed. in terms of pure value (assuming you can secure a recovery skill elsewhere) then a 2-3LMB amazon is probably already better than your 0LMB Super Creek.
King Halo (speed) is another good SR but there are quite a few good speed SRs (sweep tosho and enshin flash are better at equal LMB). the biggest knock for king halo are the lackluster skills available. the raw stat production is fine.
i don't know enough about the other SRs. some Rs are okay though the overwhelming majority are unusable.

i dunno if you do this already but choosing energy recovery options when available/reasonable from random events is a big difference-maker. remember that a training hit is like ~22 energy, those random event prompts that propose something like +10 to a stat versus even 15 energy is a terrible trade since a training session represents 50-60 stats late-game while early-game it means more friendship gauge (for quicker rainbows) and/or higher-leveled training stations (for better base numbers).
I'm not spending anymore money until Kitasan Black.
