I've been thinking about making a mod for smithing that changes how improving items works. instead of increasing your improvement quality through perks make it based on the quality of upgrade materials.
So like a +1 or +2 upgrade requires simple materials like vanilla, but +3 to +4 also require gemstones and fire salts or even frost salts for stalhrim, and then max level upgrades requiring the most expensive stuff like daedra hearts, soul gems, dragon bones/scales, heart stones and so on. And also increase the amounts of these required things so it's actually a significant cost. Maybe a top level upgrade requiring something like 5x ingots, 10x fire salt, 3x daedra hearts and a flawless diamond.

With the massive lists the only documentation you will have on custom changes is from the list maker, if they care to make notes at all. You basically have to reverse engineer the whole damn thing to engineer your own stuff rather than just engineering your own stuff at the start.
