The gameplay loop is definitely weird but that's what makes the games unique. (Good thing?) Your biggest challenge is not killing the boss before you, but doing so without taking damage or breaking your streak. Because combat pretty much boils down to autoaiming while dodging.

how would a BN4 Improvement/Tweaks work? something that is plausibly hackable and not a remake

I suppose the most obvious change is "compress 3 runs into 1 game". You could do this by significantly expanding each tournament set. The order of battles is still random but you always get all the souls. (The thing that probably wouldn't be possible is "Get souls from both games.)

The biggest problem now is what do you do with the different encounter sets and BMD/PMDs. For BMD/PMD, the "simplest" approach here is to aggressive reshuffle the things so you only have 1 set of BMDs/PMDs, and toss a lot of the rest into shops (e.g. HPMems), BGMDs, and pickups (e.g. compress the RegUps so you have more pickups slots).
Encounters could be fixed by a phased encounter system as in other games (e.g. net-wise encounters generally move to game2 after the first tournament, but you ensure that earlier-game viruses can still be found in some obscure jack-in spot). Again, a ton of reshuffling needed here to make this sensible

The second change folks might ask for is "have a way to regain darkchip HP". Maybe maintaining high karma for a number of battles? Getting a ton of full synchros?

The third thing is maybe some way to extend soul times. But that's just my selfish want.

X and Zero are complicit insofar as just doing their duties and not having knowledge of Magma's falseflag. They did what they thought was right with what they knew, and so did the other side.

But, yeah, I wouldn't call X and Zero perfect heroes or really heroic at all during the X era. X is pretty human in that he gives up and loses empathy, and Zero is honestly just a machine that carries the will of who's giving orders. I think Inti understood that while X5 onwards had to depict X and Zero differently in order to justify more games and not upset the audience. X series is a catch 22 of a series.

Arguably, he did achieve Light's vision of robots being able to carve their paths and feel like humans. He probably expected something a lot less realistic and more hopeful than what ended up happening.
