There is definitively place for a game that is much like GTA online, where instead of a menu, you have the whole map to dick around your with your character and friends and any random retard, and you queue for the different activities.

I had an idea while thinking about WoW and some MMO-like manga.

What if you made an MMO where the end game is so hard that you can't defeat the final boss in any way? People would see it as a challenge, and new expansions, etc., would help you get new gear, skills, and upgrades that would bring you one step closer to defeating the final boss. People would make progression videos showing how to reach certain points, but it would still be too difficult. But maybe one day, the final boss would be reachable and maybe even defeatable.

We have multiple weeks of timewalking where the raids and the weekly quest give a heroic gear. Then you have the cartel chips where you can pick out a piece of gear you want

I dreamed this like 6 months ago, so I don't remember all the iconic NPCs that died.
Players would do timed world events to try and hold back the End consuming each Zone, while mages tried to get portals stable to evacuate civilians to other worlds. Eventually, once a master timer lasting a few weeks ran out, the zone or region in question would be destroyed in a cutscene. Any players still inside the boundaries of the Zone would perma-die, and the area would become permanently inaccessible. The End crept across every major continent at once, with a different continent's zone featured as the timed event each cycle.

I know Jaina ended up stranded on a strange ice world with a bunch of random Horde, with the implication that she would have to set aside her hatred of them to stay alive and survive. Anduin died single-handedly Pally-bubbling the incoming End to rescue about 200 other NPCs and give them time to get to a portal. The Xpac ends with the possibility of WoW II taking place in a future where magic and technology have melded and the Azeroth races live across several planets. Oh, and some of the characters accidentally opened portals to StarCraft as an amusing Easter Egg.
