It comes down to releasing the right thing at the right time, with the right energy.
GitS took the groundwork of Appleseed and then solidified it with better plots and cyberpunk themes from William Gibson. It's about building off your previous successes, unfortunately games take too long to create.
The only reason anyone even knows GitS is because of the anime film, which took huge liberties with the source material anyways.
Anyways to tie it back to gamedev, you need to make your own luck. Be ready when the opportunities come.

i have an idea for a game, but i'm a turbo brainlet with no dev experience. between unity and unreal, which engine has the most resoures available for a retard to make a game that heavily utilizes procedural world generation and procedural animation.

How long do you think it will be in early access?
I don't even know if this is a reasonable thing to worry about on multiple different levels, but I've been making small games just as learning exercises for a bit now, starting with following tutorials into doing my own. I think it's mostly been going well, though it's a bit of a hard thing to judge because I don't have a point of reference for how far along others may be after having worked on this stuff for the same amount of time or whatever, but something I've become increasingly concerned with since I started making games without tutorials is that I've become more and more reliant on AI to help me.
Early on I tried to just figure stuff out with documentation or what I could find online, but when AI works it works well enough that it feels like it really outclasses any other options for figuring stuff out. I still hope to actually feel like I understand what I'm doing and maybe even like I would be able to make the kind of small projects I'm doing now without relying on AI someday, but I often worry I'm just getting the AI to do everything for me. I never copy and paste code and try not to proceed from any topic unless I feel I understand what some script is doing, even if that script is just repeating what the AI gave me, and I even try rewriting what the AI gave me from memory a few times sometimes, but I still worry I'm over-reliant on it. Is this even something worth worrying about so long as it's getting results?
>>530467101If you're at the point where you could be doing most stuff by yourself without having to look up documentation/tutorials/forum questions, then it might be that AI is stunting your growth. But if you'd be still be using tutorials, then it's the same shit, might as well use AI if it's quicker
>>530464130We need chicken jockey part deux

Today I gave everything a uint32_t identifier.
14 bits for flags, 6 for Area, 6 for Room, 6 for Entity/Object.
That's 64 total areas, 64 rooms per area, and 64 entities/objects per room in an area. With a bunch of slots leftover that can be repurposed.
I also made a time system that has around 4million ticks for 24 years of game play (it's an artificial cut-off, could add more or increase by an 'era' or something), with 12 months and 12 days per month. As well as 8 enums for early/late morning/afternoon/evening/night.
Getting down the UID system will help before I move to some kind of basic markov-chain weather system that's area-global, and incorporating light level with time that's global-global.

I have this idea on my head to make a game, but I barely know stuff about programming (I learned some c and c# at school, but just basic stuff).
How should I make a game to put it on steam? is there any recommended way to "start making it"?
Last time I checked, there was a lot of hate against unity (I did some stuff for personal use for android there before).
Also, are there any legal repercusions if I leave users use their own "sprites"? I'm thinking of making a game which will allow you to add your custom skins somehow to some objects, but seein how this could maybe... be missused, I'm wondering if it'd make me at fault if someone uses a dick pick as a skin, and then uploads it as "this game has dicks on it".

>>530333227My advice is that left that idea on the backlog and focus on developing skills.
You're asking for an idea that clearly is not a begginer product.
Both unity and godot can do it.
Your issue is actually more related to learning CS and math with a bit of learning low poly, more than something related to unity and godot.
I've literally made tools that read the hardrive and some dude made a MIDI daw, another guy made a basic operative system clone and another made a 3D pixel art renderer with godot.
So clearly godot can do what you want.

Threadly reminder that even gamedev success can be a trap.
Imagine your game earns you 10 years of income. Would you quit your job and start making games full time? If so, you'd have fallen into the same trap I did.
The crux of the trap is the time you spend as a gamedev will count against you if ever need to get a job again. And the ironic thing is the more successful you are, the more dangerous the trap will be unless you earn enough money to never need a job again.
The only way full-time gamedev would be sustainable is if your games keep earning you at least a year of expenses for every year worked... until you're literally 75. And I do mean literally. When you're 72, you'll need to sit down and make a game that earns you 3 years of expenses. Anything short of that and you'll eventually run out of money. And when you do, you'd have been 10-15-20 years out of the job market and good luck getting a job with an employment gap that big.
When you run out of money, it can take as little as a couple of months for your life to be ruined. That's what happened to me. I found myself broke at 45 and no job for the past 15 years except making games. And I'm looking at 30 more years of having to survive. I can't get job interviews, I can't afford to keep working on games, and I'm too old to get into trades. My life is probably fucked because my first project earned me 10 years of income and I quit my job like a dumb ass.
Anyway, the point of this is to warn you: DO NOT QUIT YOUR JOBS UNLESS YOU EARNED ENOUGH MONEY TO NEVER NEED A JOB AGAIN. If my warning saves even a couple of you, it's worth it.
And remember that I'm not trying to discourage you from making your game, just from going full-time before you get fuck-you-money.
>>530561664Do you have a SWE degree? No? Then who cares, if it works and doesn't slow down the user's computer then it's fine.

Game developer Eric Barone, known as ConcernedApe, told Anadolu Agency (AA) that he started developing games while looking for a job after completing his computer science education. He grew up playing games and loved games that offered imaginary worlds to explore, and that he developed his "dream game" Stardew Valley by drawing inspiration from his childhood love of gaming.
"The world can be chaotic and stressful," Barone said, describing games like "Stardew Valley" and "Harvest Moon" as "relaxing and healing." "Going out, going to work, all of that can trigger the urge for people to come home and relax and escape to a place where they feel comfortable. You're looking for something to relieve stress. So it depends on what people are looking for in their lives. But as the world gets crazier, maybe people are looking for a comfortable escape," he said.
The developer stated that he viewed the blurring of the line between reality and the game world as a negative, emphasizing that people should remember the line between the two worlds.
Barone explained that he is concerned about the digitalization of many things in the future, where everything is done through the internet, phones, and screens without interacting with people, and pointed out that this is socially negative.
Barone stated that he is not advocating that games should be abandoned completely, but that the effects and consequences of this habit should be considered.
According to Barone, the fact that so many things are digital right now diminishes "the spirit of being and living."
"People shouldn't allow themselves to be completely digital," "It's funny, but as a game developer, it's my job to create fake digital worlds for people. But I still think it should be like a toy. Something you mess with every now and then and it's interesting. But our main focus in life shouldn't be to exist in a digital metaverse. It's not good for people and it doesn't make them happy in the end."
>>530562918You know what, that's not a terrible idea. I have the vision but I wasn't sure if I was capable of doing so coding wise. I'll start with 1v1 first then add more players once it gets working.

Arguing that some games are like "life simulations," Barone pointed out that activities such as building houses and interacting instinctively please people.
However, Barone pointed out that these games, described as a "comfortable escape," provide an "escape from reality" and that there is a risk of spending too much time in the virtual world.
Barone, the game's developer, emphasized the importance of how games are developed and used, saying that game developers must take responsibility for "doing the right thing."

Official servers + matchmaking + competitive only makes sense if you sell MTX on players.
If youโre not going the MTX route, just release an official dedicated server that anyone can host; and host only the master server yourself.
Your game will not have players, so you will need decent bots.
For netcode, if you have no experience, you will either want to get deeply familiar with the topic OR find an extremely easy to use off-the-shelf solution. Fortunately you will only have 8 players and 1 ball, so it shouldnโt be too hard to set up. โ Look into the trade-offs of different solutions, obviously you will want something that optimizes for local perceived latency, else driving the car will feel very bad.

Barone noted that people should take responsibility and be careful not to become addicted, adding that money is made through addiction.
He also mentioned that the games he likes are somewhat addictive, emphasizing that their fun nature is a result of this, which is why people keep playing the games again and again. He pointed out that games technically have an addictive quality, and that the reward system, in particular, affects the level of dopamine in the brain. He said that in some games, providing immediate rewards for an action "hijacks the brain," and that accelerating this process too much can be problematic. He pointed out that achieving goals in realistic timeframes in games shouldn't be artificial, saying, "If you get the reward too quickly, it might not be easy for you in the real world. It's a bit difficult. You have to work to get the reward. So if you've trained yourself to expect immediate rewards for everything in a video game, you're going to have a hard time when you get out into the real world. But if you have to actually work for rewards in the game, it trains you to know that you're going to have to work a little harder to get the reward." He emphasized that products should be promoted honestly, that if people were interested, they would try it, and that it was important that people were not forced or directed to do so.
Barone, who stated that otherwise people would be pressured into making their choices, said, "At this point, you become a kind of 'drug dealer.' You try to get people addicted to your game. And when they get addicted, you start taking money from them. I feel bad about doing something like that. It's not the right treatment."
Barone also pointed out that friendships and communities are formed with other people, and that the sector provides many jobs; new fields such as Twitch streamers and professional video game players have emerged.
According him, the "soul" of businesses is being destroyed when they are focused on making money.

If your engine is not a website but just a regular thing built on SDL or similar: You probably want just a static background and then put spritesheets into certain places, research the technique if you donโt know it, itโs very simple, basically you split your animation into 16 images, for example, and then just change which one you display every 100 ms or every 400 ms, whatever makes sense.

To be precise about spritesheets, the idea is to put all steps onto the same static png in e.g. a 4x4 pattern and then only change which origin from that texture you cut out. Though for simple cases you can also just make 16 different textures.

Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)
Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."
Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

im amazed that high budget games still leverage robotic animations despite having access to mocap studios. its just an observation I had while playing metaphor (its not that great of a game). its so unbelievably fucking jarring to watch a fully mo-capped scene and then watch characters either do a 180 degree turn slowly without and stepping or poorly blend between generic talking/idle animations.
im literally going rokokunigger just to dab on these retarded lazy ass japs and animate as much as I can

Can I project the performance of a small open world game by simply spawning a certain amount of boxes? like 50k maybe. no physics. besides drawing the level there'll be few npcs with simple logic so it won't be a drain. I think that covers the heavy hitters with my planned gameplay.
>>530587182you just need to start building the game and profile as needed.

What are the most interactive agdg games where you can interact with the world in myriad and unexpected ways? Where you think โhmm I wonder if I can do this crazy thingโ and five minutes later go โahh I can do this crazy thing :oโ
i just had a short moment of realization. what i long for is community. that what i work on matters to someone. it sounds cheesy, but the feel of sitting alone at home working on something just for myself felt sad. just like being on a lonely island, completely alone, building stuff you cannot share with someone.
i wonder what it'd be like having a bunch of bros in real life who are into gamedev and you fuck around with prototypes and funny ideas and show stuff to each other. i imagine this to be kinda fun. just like doing counter-strike training sessions and trying all sorts of weird strategies or doing fun dumb shit.
maybe gamedev is more fun with friends, just like games are more fun with friends.
maybe it's not important to collect all the income for yourself, maybe it's more about collecting all the good memories and having fun with bros.
i don't think you can force this though. just like you can't force relationships with women. usually you just stumble upon this shit or not...
i was just thinking about some cool ideas again, but somehow it feels like they don't even matter. it'd be like painting in the shadows. without a spotlight, your painting doesn't even exist. it takes light to see a painting. without other people, your game doesn't really exist.
don't call this a blogpost, it's not like all your other shitposts are any more meaningful..

>>530593287I donโt know, Iโm not in the marketing department. But I can tell you that our marketing department has went through two restructurings. The first marketing department did almost nothing and was comprised of friends of the chief of staff. They received preferential treatment and were the only employees who were allowed to work remote. They used the company card to eat at expensive restaurants twice a month. The board of directors fired them and the chief of staff. The second marketing department was hired from scratch and the new marketing manager was a narcissistic liar who used chatgpt for everything including his resume and he was really good at interviewing. Unfortunately he didnโt do anything except โdelegateโ and kept begging the board to create new marketing positions, insisting that he could actually do the things they were demanding of him if he had โjust one more employee.โ And he kept doing that every month until the marketing department was the most bloated department in the building. He was fired because he kept yelling and verbally abusing his subordinates. The department itself was gutted too.
We have a running joke in my company that the marketing department is cursed because the company keeps filling those positions with charlatans who donโt do anything. So I suppose my answer to โhow do I into marketingโ is get really really good at deceiving people who have lots of money into believing that you provide any value at all.

>>530558539The best you can do is look at the common things in games that do go viral. A lot of it is something new, not necessarily unique but fresh or different enough that people want to play it when they see it. They also tend to be games that are good to stream but also fun to play and ones where watching a stream doesn't detract from your own experience of playing it. I'm sure you could spot more if you started studying what went viral.
Now of course that doesn't mean that having those elements will guarantee going viral but it's something you can increase your odds with if you do it properly.

How do I get this audience of desperate fanboys where I could unironically get away with charging them $49.99?

A Billion Dollar Company Just RIGGED Steam Reviews
I think the reason why it's hard for me to develop and why I'm so slow generally is because I'm never in a good enough mood, it's once in a blue moon that I'm in a good enough mood to develop and I think the reason is this: crippling loneliness
The internet is actually a culprit because it gives you this false sense of being with others
Game development is also a culprit, especially solo development. When you think
about it it feels fucked up because solo gamedev is this activity that requires
you to sit down for hours on end, in front of this cold machine and requires your FULL UNDISTURBED ATTENTION to ever make any substancetial progress.
The second another human tries to get your attention, your flow is broken and you can't get work done as easily. This is solo development by the way, maybe team work is different but I never tried it.
So yeah, solo gamedev is fucked up. Being lonely is a requirement for
making any substantial progress.
