The weird route is commentary on what players will do with too much freedom in games, people derailing the plot to focus on game breaks, sequence breaks and finding mysteries. So then, it'd make sense if the prophecy was broken.
However, the game makes it seem as if the prophecy can't be broken and just appears elsewhere, it doesn't warp in the shadow crystals, and the dark bead describes Kris as broken off but still locked.

Super bullshit theory incoming:
I think the Knight both is and isn't Dess.
Why is the song titled findher.ogg if she's just the Knight and roaming around? Why would we need to find her?
When Dess went missing, Kris presumed she was dead. They did a summoning ritual with Catti to bring Dess back, using her dust, a bunch of bones and their own hand to create a vessel for her soul. Because Dess wasn't actually dead, the ritual failed, and they got a zombie amalgamation of Dess's corps.
That leaves the question, what is controlling Dess's corpse? It's probably FRIEND but I have an even more bullshit theory that dips into fanfic territory:
I think a piece of Kris's soul split when they lost their hand and is puppeting the Knight. This piece of Kris is all of Kris's violent tendencies and plans to sacrifice a bunch of characters either to actually findher.ogg or as revenge. Kris is mostly working with the Knight because well that's part of their soul and they don't have many other options.
However, I think the actual Dess is working against Kris and the Knight. She was the one that discarded your vessel and put (you) into Kris's body.
The Device that connects you to the game is also connecting Dess back to the Light World. That's what the lyrics "Because I'm with you in the dark with your heart as my mark which shall guide you the way" means. This entire time the real Dess has been trying to guide (you) and Kris to where she actually is through the Device.
I think in the weird route, you're making Kris give into all their intrusive thoughts and the end point is they'll eventually be absorbed into the Knight becoming a being of pure hatred that eventually dies.
The good route will be about Kris coming to terms with their trauma and accepting themself. This allows the Knight to be purified and the piece of Kris's soul will merge back into them. Finally, FRIEND will also be purified and possess the Knight corpse, which will now be just a skeleton and he will call himself-

That being said, again, ch4 helped a lot, but it's still kind of weird. As a guy, for whatever reason, I can be a lot more easily 'convinced' or 'charmed' of guy x guy stuff (like the RG's or asgore/rudy) than I can girl x girl stuff (alphys x undyne is really similar to noelle x susie too and felt pretty forced). Also while I do think Toby generally writes the lgbt shit well and makes it exist in a way that doesn't really bother me even if it's not exactly "my thing", the fact he makes sure every single positive ship is gay and negative ship / destroyed ship is straight kinda fucks with me, like he's trying a little bit *too* hard to appeal to that audience and not enough to appeal to anyone outside that audience at least when it comes to romance.

The Weird route's biggest issue is not having a clear player-oriented reasoning behind why you are even doing it
It's not a substitute for genocide. It hasn't been playing on any satisfactory meta commentary so far, people tried to say it's about control but with how little content there is in chapters 3 and 4 it's not like that control has been fulfilling
Is it about trying to change the prophecy? Then the weird route doesn't work for a chapter game release where people datamine everything or watch all secrets on youtube and it's taking over 10 years to be complete. There was no reason to trigger the route in chapter 2 besides fucking around for the sake of it. I was wondering why there are scenes showing Susie and Sans bleeding when monsters usually don't, and it occurred to me that blood might be the opposite of determination in Undertale and Deltarune. It's a natural substance for humans to have, but something that monsters only create under unusual circumstances. While determination manifests in moments of extreme hope and drive (e.g. Undyne the Undying) blood can appear in monsters in moments of complete despair (e.g. Susie seeing the end of the prophecy, Sans realizing that he failed and the world is going to be destroyed). Yellow text is used at times in Undertale, most often to refer to the actual SAVE power, but also in reference to having hope for positive outcomes in general (e.g. the names of monsters turn yellow when they can be spared). On the other hand, red text signifies a lack of hope, an indication that things won't end well (at least on the path you're currently taking) which ties into its frequent use on the genocide route.

I played ch1 on release, but I've only played 2-4 in the last couple of weeks. Replaying 1 after like a decade there is a huge jump in quality between 1 and 2, but then after that 2-4 feel surprisingly cohesive. At the moment it doesn't feel like there are any huge leaps/holes, but there's a lot of plates that are spinning right now which could all fall down in ch5-7
But I also wasn't there for the supposed mike drama or woody theory or any of the other fan events that were set up. The experience I had is very different to the community of people who have been on board and attentive the whole time.

The "escapism" angle is forced so fucking hard by this fandom.
Chapter 4 does not present religion as escapism *at all*. It presents church and prayer as positive elements of a community and a person's personal spirituality. A real and meaningful part of people's lives. The idea of escapism in the sense of using a toy or fantasy to ignore reality for a while is totally absent from the plot and themes of chapter 4. Even when it comes to the prophecy, none of what Ralsei gets up to is escapism, his issues are a mix of avoidance and fatalism.
Chapter 3 is acknowledged by Susie and Ralsei to be an exercise in escapism from the get-go, and they're both on the same page about what it is and when it's time to wrap it up. There's no actual conflict about escapism; the cast are actually shown to have a very healthy understanding and use of the concept.

Why didn't Kris throw away the thorn after taking it from Noelle in the Weird Route? Are they stupid? If they didn't like the way things were going, they could've just thrown the thorn into the forest or the lake on the way back to their house. Since the player wasn't there, Kris could've aborted the route by themselves right then and there and we wouldn't be able to do anything about it since we wouldn't know where it was thrown. Toby just said otherwise, also the game did still launch with fatal crashes despite playtesting, you are lying to say Toby's being perfect with content review.
The game was/is in dev hell on some level for Toby to need to expand his team and have a producer. Toby was hoping on some level the project would take 7 years to finish (early quote when mentioning wanting to stick to a project for at most 7 years), we're 8 years just to hit Ch5 with 2-3 chapters still left. And I will note the last bit of the quote. The chances of DR fumbling is incredibly unlikely but if it implodes on the 11th (or 13th) hour, or the writing gets sloppy, it'll be team's failing, not solely Toby. I doubt when he's telling what others to do he's telling them to type his 1-to-1 dialogue but rather an in-depth description of something, a hearty paragraph to work with instead of a sentence or two (and even then, only mentions doing this on occasion). I read it wanting answers and the interview, to me at least, gave answers. Its insight to the inner machinations presiding over development so that when I look at something and wonder "why?", it's more than complete conjecture.
Also I think we can confirm that cringe Toby is still alive and well.

If you want to get more schizo, the main thing the Knight has accomplished is teaching Kris and Susie how to defeat Titans and giving Susie a direction for her anger, i.e. get in the Shelter. Which could indicate the Knight is setting them up to be able to stop it afterwards.
Catti suggests Kris having become more distant, likely him trying to push others away to save them the pain if he has to die by the end of this.
I don't think he was expecting to really get as close to Susie and Ralsei as he has. He's still deeply driven to get Dess back since that incident may have been the cause of a lot of his issues, it's not a rational thing. Even then, I think the ending of Chapter 4 where he's standing at the window and there at least being an option to try and get Kris to speak his mind shows that he's started to waver on that.
Especially if, as I theorize from how Susie acts at the end of Chapter 4, she's one prophecized to die.
