Remember that Knuckles is a social caveman and has never closely interacted with a woman until Rouge shows up in Adventure 2 (Before Sega made it so Amy was his buddy in the classic universe, that is).
Realistically, he would get extremely hard just at the sensation of that hot voluptuous woman grabbing him by the neck. Then his natural primal instincts would kick in.
He doesn't have entire years of indoctrination to understand what he's doing. He is just following his urges like the recluse hermit he is. And oh boy does he rape her.
He throws that bitch to the ground, hops on top of her, and tears all her clothes off. That whore instantly regrets getting in the way of this unstable aboriginal. She cries and screams for help as Knuckles pumps her with lust he has never felt before, in a complete daze and consumed by his basic primal responses.
Eggman shows up with his gay-ass claw thing but is so instantly intimidated by this savage display that he just leaves.
After pumping Rouge full of his echidna seed and leaving her broken and mentally scarred, he throws her out of his island and gets back to his duty, curious about what had just occurred but ultimately unfazed. Simply satisfied with the experience and hoping to re-enact it again someday.

Knuckles has some idea, also considering his amateur treasure-hunting/archeology. When he first appears in Station Square, his initial reaction is wincing at the bright sunlight (ic).

It happened multiple times in history, generally it leads to people abandoning to create a competition, for example disney with don bluth or katzemberg later on, the big corp in question start losing hard until they hire people who love their jobs, and pixar loved their jobs so much they literally saved that shithole from being fucked over by Shrek.
I know animation is not exactly the same as vidya but it's still entertainment, the only thing that makes sega lift their asses and restructure for the better is the competition, like every company.

Sonic Team and SEGA have been clearly done with humans since Forces, and the writing's been on the wall for years now. Forces was a financial success despite what /sthg/ thinks about it, and all the furries, SATAMfags, and gaming journalists wouldn't shut up about how "cringe" and "dated" human characters were. So what does SEGA do? They listen to the vocal minority and now we're stuck with this furry world bullshit forever.
They've already started the process too - look at TailsTube when Eggman casually mentions decimating G.U.N. That's literally them setting up the lore justification for why human civilization is gonna be wiped out. They'll probably keep Tori around, maybe the GUN commander for Shadow stuff, and Professor Pickle because he's a meme, but human settlements? GONE. Mark my words, they're gonna retcon it so there was some massive human genocide or dimensional split that explains why suddenly the entire planet is nothing but talking animals.
The Forces avatar system was literally their test run to see if they could replace humans entirely. It's way cheaper to slap together some generic animal OCs than to actually model and animate proper human characters with different body types, clothing, and facial features. Plus it's easier for their artists to just copy-paste the same furry template 50 times than to design actual human NPCs.
And don't even get me started on Sonic and the Blade of Courage. That whole thing is non-canon pandering garbage made specifically to throw a bone to Sonic X fans, just like how Mania was made to shut up classicfags and Superstars was more classic cuck bait. It's all hollow nostalgia pandering while the mainline games push this soulless furry world agenda where humans don't exist.
Face it, humans in Sonic are done. SEGA took the easy route and now we're stuck with Mobius 2.0 forever because it's cheaper and the Twitter crowd likes it more.
