I've written more in depth reviews in the past but I built a babble, rebuilt it in several configurations, and tested 3 different firmwares both before and after the rewrite and at the end of it all I just bought a quest pro.

There are too many issues to list, but it is very sensitive to facial structure and background lighting. My experience roughly 6 weeks ago is completely consistent with >>530580513.

Babble was trained on a small set of volunteer faces so if you are a dev in a pitch black room (or have a similar enough face and setup) it will work very well, but I suspect 60-80% of people who buy a babble are going to be disapointed. It will not work at all if your room is lit, as is required for a camera tracked headset.

I will also note that babble is the only face tracking solution that uses a single camera. Every other face tracking solution has 2-3 cameras because the problem is too hard to solve in 2d.

Anyone know if a VRC prefab exists that lets you customize the gesture animations via radial wheel? Been working on a marketplace avatar, but I don't want to limit whoever buys it with whatever I set, vs. a PC release where you can just customize it in Unity if you don't like it.

Here. You want to set your textures max size to as low resolution as possible while still looking acceptable from a couple feet away. Sometimes 512 or 1024 at high quality will look better than 2048 at normal quality. Never use low quality or crunch compression for any reason.

My personal take is some combination of:

A) Face tracking with a single black and white camera is too hard and the problem is not solvable no matter how smart you are.

B) Only a large company like Apple or Meta is willing to pay for 50-100 people with vastly different faces to take hundreds of clean images for use as training data.

It is honestly impressive that babble works as well as it does given the right circumstances but the problem is extremely hard. Babble is not just trying to detect like open/closed mouth and smile/frown, there are 50 different expressions parameters that it needs to differentiate and convert to stable signals and if any of them wobble it makes your avatar look clowney (unless you delete less reliable sections from the blendtree which is an option).

A replacement strap is pretty much a requirement anyway, and so is a better facial interface. Might as well get a bobovr s3 or equivalent with a swappable battery.
The major selling point of pancakes is allowing for thinner HMDs, and being clear regardless of whether or not you're in the sweetspot. The price you pay for this is a very dim display ( unless you get a Quest Pro ), and heavy vignetting. Quest3 also has really shit LCD displays with the-lcd-equivalent-of-mura.

In terms of lenses and comfort, the Quest 3S is the same as the Quest 2, and while the sweetspot is small they do not suffer from the vignetting of the Quest 3.
However, the field of view is shit, the comfort is shit, the size is shit. Vignetting be damned, the Quest 3S should not ever be seriously considered.

Did the same thing and I can tell you the difference in visual clarity is night and day. Never tried the link cable though, only steamlink and virtual desktop (steamlink is better imo but mileage may vary). A new head strap is mandatory. I used the kiwi comfort strap and it works a charm. Battery is just a random high capacity usbc battery pack zip tied to the top strap which gives me an extra four hours play time. No battery will get you about two hours. I'm sure you can get a second battery and hot swap them if you want to game all day.

Before, avatars had zero encryption which made it extremely easy to just take tham using a tool, any retarded-ass eBoy or mirror thot could just rip to their hearts content.
Now it has a basic level of encryption it becomes significantly harder for those low level users to rip avatars, but someone who knows how to dump VRAM and then extract the 3D data would still be able to rip a model - but that's several magnitudes of difficulty higher than just running a tool you downloaded online.

But also AFAIK you're only getting the model by dumping VRAM, if the avatar has some kind of very specific functionality that you want too then that gets lost. But also anyone who uses Dextro to protect their avatar is going to make it even harder since you then have to decode that afterwards.

FWIW vrchat avatars are essentially just a unity assetbundle, which is uploaded directly to S3 when you click the upload button, unencrypted. Since April or so, vrchat added a step where the assetbundle gets downloaded to ram and encrypted by a session-specific key before its saved in the cache, which when combined with EAC, does raise the protection above the average skiddie (can't just take the file out of the cache, can't read the key or decrypted bundle out of process memory, can't MITM the download).

However, if you do reimplement the auth process in e.g. a private vrchat client, the assetbundles are still unencrypted on S3 itself and easily downloadable, and you can import them back into the unity editor pretty much intact (full gameobject hierarchy and properties; only the shaders are actually compiled); no need to dump VRAM itself and deal with the raw meshes sent to the GPU. And it's unlikely this'll change, since unity needs to read the assetbundle format to load the avatars, and reencrypting things in S3 at rest would be expensive (and also decryptable, as the client will need the key sent to them somehow).

Dextro or similar will obfuscate the actual assetbundle before it's uploaded; while it's not perfect (limited keyspace can be brute-forced), it does raise the bar further above assetbundle downloading. Won't stop the dedicated skiddie still, but it's practically the best you can do if you care about muh ripping (I don't).

Yeah, interacting with vrchat servers gives them a lot more surface area to try and fingerprint your behavior and ban you (vs just copying the assetbundles out of the cache). However there's not really an easy fix. The assetbundle needs to exist unencrypted on your computer at some point (for unity to load it), and the avatar sdk itself is pretty thin on top of unity; i.e. even vrchat wanted to move to some proprietary more-obfuscated storage format, they'd basically need to make a whole new game engine at the same time and break all backwards compatibility.

In theory they could move the avatar decryption onto a TPM, but that's also not cheap to integrate (DRM jews) and it'd (hopefully) be a lot harder to sell (wow! vrchat now requires pluton!). Then again, here we are 3 years after EAC, so

The reason I do it in the middle is because some people don't want to play games and would prefer to just chill and chat in the instance. That way people who want to play games can hop into the portal and the people who don't want to can just stay in the original instance.
When games are over people tend to shuffle back into the original instance.
