Might sound weird at first but believe it or not it's about social interaction. Fighting games are isolating by nature, especially online. The reason team games, even incredibly unforgiving ones like CS or MOBAs explode in popularity is because it makes you feel like you're part of something. You're part of a team, a community, from the very beginning and in every game, whether you win or lose.

If you want to get someone into fighting games you have to take them to a local, OR you have to do a *really* good job at simulating a local environment online (discord, /tekgen/). There is no other way. Until devs figure out how to simulate this social interaction within their game FGs will continue to be niche. The funny thing is it's not even hard, just make a feature complete "hub" with automated tournaments, group spectating, betting, in-game streams of major tournaments, etc. These hubs exist, but the features that would make you want to use them don't for some reason, it's utterly stupid.

It sounds retarded but the majority of casuals do not want to just open the game and 1v1 some random with 0 interaction. They want to be social. The more social you make your game the more players it will attract and keep. Make it part of the game instead of relying on random seedy discords to do it for you and your game will succeed no matter how complex it is. Don't and it will die.

As a sidenote, SF6 got around this and built their sense of community via an extremely well thought out marketing campaign with vtubers and streamers. Worked fairly well, but the core idea is the same. Of course this is on top of being a popular IP, but you can see the difference when you compare to the other popular IP (tekken).
