I've been playing the TW version blind outside of the translation patch. Probably worthwhile to look into a guide on what characters to aim for.
I've also been using the 80 pity banner so far to prove a point, but the 110 pity banners are the way to go.

Just EOS this game and release it as a standalone Persona title, streamline the confidants, reduce the grind and it could be a solid 8/10 game with all content released and with the gacha shit gone.

If you look at the decisions from a "how can scrape away as much as possible" perspective, then it makes more sense.
Change soft pity to be shit, means everyone speds 3-7 more pulls on every banner, means they might spend to get those final pulls they would have had.
Change maintenance rewards and remove redemption codes. 2-3 banners every patch that now need to be supplemented by paying.
Accelerate banners and postpone adding to standard with no actual timings given, to induce FOMO
remove 3 pulls from the patch login events.
Jumble up the values of all the synergy rewards and put more on the final steps of the synergy so people feel the need to speed earlier into their playtime.

If you then apply those 10, 20, 30 pulls over the course of a month on a million accounts, you see how much everyone loses and might make someone spend a bit more because they're close to having enough

You don't need multiple copies of meta limiteds, those are OP units at one. Any dupes are just gravy. You didn't have a shot in hell at getting A3 for limited units in CN either just because they got like 10% more pull currency per patch cycle.

The passive at A2 buff benefits 1) 4*s hitting big power spikes earlier so we can smoke side content more easily and quickly and 2) standard 5*s like Ann and Marian hitting meta levels with one full less copy which is a massive deal.

I honestly don't think they expected anywhere close to the numbers they got for the new regions. It feels like they expected them to fail. The jewery is one thing. But so little time and effort has been put into any of the actual community management. Do you know that all the old regions get patch notes in advance + dev commentary?
It's funny because some changes to global (pretty much everything unrelated to pull currency and rates) are actually really good, lots of QoL that took a long time to be added to older versions. The only shit change outside of the pull currency fuck overs is the level gating.

I guess you could say I'm playing both sides in the sense that standard 5*s and limited 5*s should be evaluated differently in terms of economy.

Characters getting a new passive one full copy earlier at three pulls is f2p friendly for standards. You want to get units like Ann and Marian to their second passive, and we get that in 3 copies rather than 4. That's very good for GL f2p players. For limiteds though, it's still going to be really unlikely and/or expensive to get more than one copy let alone 3-4, so the GL buff to awareness passives doesn't really impact them much. The buff therefore isn't a big real for limiteds because 1) they're already very strong at one copy and 2) getting them their second passive is unlikely whether it happens at A2 or A3. In a similar vein, it wouldn't matter if you were on CN either, your ass is likely not getting Joker's second passive without a lot of luck or money. Neither the A2 buff (GL) nor getting an extra few hundred gems here and there (CN) will help you there.

tl;dr for 5* standards I'd argue GL is better off being able to hit meta with one less copy, for 5* limiteds it doesn't really matter one way or the other because you are unlikely to get their second passive f2p on either version of the game. Less gibs feels bad but ultimately will probably come down to like 10 fewer pulls per patch. People are literally throwing shitfits out of the irl equivalent of like 75 cents worth of meta jewels.
