Rean has a better 'growth' arc, but Van already is a formed adult and frankly he doesn't need growth as much as he needs to break his status quo.

Honestly I do feel like the buildup leading into Kai 2 (assuming it is the finale) has been pretty weak. Our villains are... a magic space box and a bunch of old villains resurrected with masks on. Van & Rene's relationship wasn't really properly built up so his heel turn just doesn't really feel like it should. Everything to do with Rean and Kevin was kept incredibly vague in Kai and none of it had any setup in Kuro 1 or 2 so it's not really exciting to think about the possibilities because they can just do anything (and not in a good way). We already know Agnes is just gonna come back with no problems so her sacrifice is also not really going to mean anything. It's just not really exciting and it all just kind of feels mindlessly cobbled together. It just makes you wonder what the fuck they spent the last 4 years doing? It's like they had no idea what the endgame of this arc was until a year ago. They should have been building up to it ever since Kuro 1 and they just really haven't. I dunno man maybe I'm just jaded now but Kai 2 is the least excited i've been for a finale in this series.
