It is correct. Shadow is described as having a sharp gaze.
In games, especially SA2/Battle/etc, Shadow's eyes are almost always wide open because they're supposed to be very striking and give off a cold imposing impression. He's also often staring directly at or near you, the viewer, to purposely make you uncomfortable.
The half-lidded eyes usually come from women who want to make him feel a little "safer" and changing the striking glare to a lazy tired uncaring one that's never looking you in the eyes is a very easy way to do it. It subconsciously gives off a more submissive impression. He no longer looks so scary and unapproachable.

Also, it has been lost over time, but originally, Shadow was always on high places with the angle below him. His back is swayed and his posture is perfect. So when he looks down at the viewer from his perch above them, his striking red gaze looking straight into your soul, you can see feel he is superior to you simply through his body language. That element of him being on a high place with the angle below him was important because it gives you this subconscious feeling that you are beneath him.
Shadow's gaze is not supposed to be soft. It is not supposed to be lazy. It is sharp, alert, on edge, and most of all it's supposed to make you feel uncomfortable.

But anon, the word "almost" here is important. They're almost always wide open. There are of course going to be exceptions because Shadow is not a robot, and it's not an issue if it's done rarely/sparingly. It's when it's done all the time as his default that it's a problem. There's a difference between doing it 10% of the time and 90% of the time.
That's why your Heroes screenshot isn't and never will be a 'gotcha' as I've never claimed he *can't* do it, just that it happens far too often and it mostly originates from fanart.

Shadow doesn't emote as much as other characters, and it's part of his appeal to me. It's badass and makes him all the more mysterious.

Maekawa is just as much of a hack as Flynn and /sthg/ needs to stop dickriding him just because he's Japanese.

Both of these faggots fundamentally hate the basic Sonic vs Eggman dynamic that made the series popular in the first place. Maekawa literally wanted to redeem Eggman after SA2 and turn him into a good guy, and the only time he came close to writing a proper Sonic vs Eggman story it was actually Metal Sonic in disguise (Heroes).

Flynn does the exact same shit. He admitted on Bumblekast that he actively avoids writing Sonic fighting Eggman because muh complex storytelling, and he constantly deflects to half-baked secondary villains. That or he makes Eggman a reluctant ally. Sometimes both.

They both create OC donut steels that completely step on existing characters' toes. Shadow was literally designed to replace both Knuckles as the rival AND Metal Sonic as the dark reflection of Sonic. He also stole Tails' role as Sonic's friendly rival who could meet and surpass his potential by being important with Chaos Control, something Maekawa bullshited and only allowed his own OC and Sonic to use.

Tangle does the same shit. She's supposed to be the "tough girl" but she steps all over Amy, Rouge, Cream, and Blaze's roles. The only reason people don't complain more about Tangle is because Flynn tied her to Whisper's sob story lesbian subplot.

Most importantly, both of them want to completely change what Sonic IS.

Flynn wants to turn mainline Sonic into his shitty SatAM fanfiction with muh Freedom Fighters and war stories. Maekawa wants to turn Sonic into some isekai anime bullshit. Neither of them actually wants to write SONIC stories. They want to write their own original nonsense.

Maekawa wants to make Sonic like a fucking Michael Bay movie, he was inspired by Armageddon to write SA2's nonsensical plot.

Flynn and Maekawa are the same type of pretentious hack, one just has nostalgia protection because he wrote during the "golden age."

I'm glad Whisper didn't kill mimic. Killing should only be saved for if there is no other way to stop the bad guy, otherwise it loses all of its weight.
Mimic has emotional reasons to kill Mimic but not logical ones, he isn't some all powerful threat, he's just one murderer. I really liked Gallagher. His stories hit the right amount of goofy that archie comics should have been. Also gave us fun stories and concepts later like Turbo Tails' fight against Mogul and foretelling his "Destiny" (which got sorely wasted later on by Pellerito and Ian), Scrap Sonic, the foreign FF teams, Mecha Madness. Even when he left and occasionally came back his sidestories were always much better than the A stories.
Bollers has the same flaws and writing style as Penders and many of his issues people blame Penders on, but I give him the benefit of the doubt because his plans for archie he was going to write before getting the boot were actually pretty cool.

Calling Sonic & Tails "friendly rivals" is very inauthentic. I see where that Tails anon is coming from, but as a Tails self inserter myself, I have to say that framing it as a "friendly rival" is only half-true.

Sonic is the coolest guy ever, and Tails is always trying to catch up and prove himself. From the very first time they met, to the Adventure games where Tails' stages are literally racing Sonic... Tails sees Sonic as someone he has to measure himself up to. SA1 is "Racing" for Tails' stages because that is exactly what Tails' perspective IS. Tails is racing against Sonic, Tails is pushing himself to beat Sonic in a race.

A one-sided race, that Sonic is not aware of. Sonic isn't paying Tails much mind, Sonic is just focused on getting to the goal and keeps an eye on Tails along the way. Sonic is impressed with Tails' ability to keep up, and encourages him to catch up and stuff, but it's not a true race or rivalry on Sonic's end outside of very specific moments.

Alongside that, Tails' motivation is not to "beat Sonic". Tails' motive is to be like Sonic, and become someone Sonic can rely on. Tails' role as a sidekick comes with the necessity of proving that he can keep up with and prove useful to Sonic. Why would Sonic even need a sidekick? What can Tails actually do to help Sonic, of all people? Tails has to answer that question, through his actions. Prove himself as "Player 1.5" or "Player 2".

The Friendly Rival character is Knuckles, who stands in opposition to Sonic even as an ally. Knuckles criticizes and challenges Sonic in ways that Tails fundamentally doesn't. There is a fundamental difference between Tails and Knuckles' dynamics with Sonic. Tails competing with Sonic, and Knuckles assisting Sonic, are very different from what the other typically does. When Tails competes with Sonic, it's to prove his own worth as someone Sonic can rely on. When Knuckles assists Sonic, it's putting his trust in someone he doesn't typically agree with.
