In games, especially SA2/Battle/etc, Shadow's eyes are almost always wide open because they're supposed to be very striking and give off a cold imposing impression. He's also often staring directly at or near you, the viewer, to purposely make you uncomfortable.
The half-lidded eyes usually come from women who want to make him feel a little "safer" and changing the striking glare to a lazy tired uncaring one that's never looking you in the eyes is a very easy way to do it. It subconsciously gives off a more submissive impression. He no longer looks so scary and unapproachable.
Also, it has been lost over time, but originally, Shadow was always on high places with the angle below him. His back is swayed and his posture is perfect. So when he looks down at the viewer from his perch above them, his striking red gaze looking straight into your soul, you can see feel he is superior to you simply through his body language. That element of him being on a high place with the angle below him was important because it gives you this subconscious feeling that you are beneath him.
Shadow's gaze is not supposed to be soft. It is not supposed to be lazy. It is sharp, alert, on edge, and most of all it's supposed to make you feel uncomfortable.
But anon, the word "almost" here is important. They're almost always wide open. There are of course going to be exceptions because Shadow is not a robot, and it's not an issue if it's done rarely/sparingly. It's when it's done all the time as his default that it's a problem. There's a difference between doing it 10% of the time and 90% of the time.
That's why your Heroes screenshot isn't and never will be a 'gotcha' as I've never claimed he *can't* do it, just that it happens far too often and it mostly originates from fanart.
Shadow doesn't emote as much as other characters, and it's part of his appeal to me. It's badass and makes him all the more mysterious.

I trawled b4k archive to compile every (audio) MP4 the Chronicles fangame guy posted ever since he started on February 17 of this year. Did this because since he's keeping a cryptic routine + I wanna have a quick "what is this" screenshot for those out of the loop:

Concept

Gameplay
>Barriers (from StF) can be used for extra turns, but make a character weaker if all lost. They recharge ala Bravely Default.
>Element system, but affinities are character-specific, not element-assigned. Blaze isn't water-weak but resists fire for example.
>[specials are via] POW meter similar to Chronicles, but can't be refilled by any kind of restoring item nor increases on level up; it's just the moves you get. Maekawa is just as much of a hack as Flynn and /sthg/ needs to stop dickriding him just because he's Japanese.
Both of these faggots fundamentally hate the basic Sonic vs Eggman dynamic that made the series popular in the first place. Maekawa literally wanted to redeem Eggman after SA2 and turn him into a good guy, and the only time he came close to writing a proper Sonic vs Eggman story it was actually Metal Sonic in disguise (Heroes).
Flynn does the exact same shit. He admitted on Bumblekast that he actively avoids writing Sonic fighting Eggman because muh complex storytelling, and he constantly deflects to half-baked secondary villains. That or he makes Eggman a reluctant ally. Sometimes both.
They both create OC donut steels that completely step on existing characters' toes. Shadow was literally designed to replace both Knuckles as the rival AND Metal Sonic as the dark reflection of Sonic. He also stole Tails' role as Sonic's friendly rival who could meet and surpass his potential by being important with Chaos Control, something Maekawa bullshited and only allowed his own OC and Sonic to use.
Tangle does the same shit. She's supposed to be the "tough girl" but she steps all over Amy, Rouge, Cream, and Blaze's roles. The only reason people don't complain more about Tangle is because Flynn tied her to Whisper's sob story lesbian subplot.
Most importantly, both of them want to completely change what Sonic IS.
Flynn wants to turn mainline Sonic into his shitty SatAM fanfiction with muh Freedom Fighters and war stories. Maekawa wants to turn Sonic into some isekai anime bullshit. Neither of them actually wants to write SONIC stories. They want to write their own original nonsense.
Maekawa wants to make Sonic like a fucking Michael Bay movie, he was inspired by Armageddon to write SA2's nonsensical plot.
Flynn and Maekawa are the same type of pretentious hack, one just has nostalgia protection because he wrote during the "golden age."

I'm glad Whisper didn't kill mimic. Killing should only be saved for if there is no other way to stop the bad guy, otherwise it loses all of its weight.
Mimic has emotional reasons to kill Mimic but not logical ones, he isn't some all powerful threat, he's just one murderer. If she killed him then she would be a murderer and even if she's justified the comic would have to spend time discussing that and we all know that's just not going to fit in a Sonic comic.

Even when he left and occasionally came back his sidestories were always much better than the A stories.
Bollers has the same flaws and writing style as Penders and many of his issues people blame Penders on, but I give him the benefit of the doubt because his plans for archie he was going to write before getting the boot were actually pretty cool.

Indiana Jones type of adventures.

Calling Sonic & Tails "friendly rivals" is very inauthentic. I see where that Tails anon is coming from, but as a Tails self inserter myself, I have to say that framing it as a "friendly rival" is only half-true.
Sonic is the coolest guy ever, and Tails is always trying to catch up and prove himself. From the very first time they met, to the Adventure games where Tails' stages are literally racing Sonic... Tails sees Sonic as someone he has to measure himself up to. SA1 is "Racing" for Tails' stages because that is exactly what Tails' perspective IS. Tails is racing against Sonic, Tails is pushing himself to beat Sonic in a race.
A one-sided race, that Sonic is not aware of. Sonic isn't paying Tails much mind, Sonic is just focused on getting to the goal and keeps an eye on Tails along the way. Sonic is impressed with Tails' ability to keep up, and encourages him to catch up and stuff, but it's not a true race or rivalry on Sonic's end outside of very specific moments.
Alongside that, Tails' motivation is not to "beat Sonic". Tails' motive is to be like Sonic, and become someone Sonic can rely on. Tails' role as a sidekick comes with the necessity of proving that he can keep up with and prove useful to Sonic. Why would Sonic even need a sidekick? What can Tails actually do to help Sonic, of all people? Tails has to answer that question, through his actions. Prove himself as "Player 1.5" or "Player 2".
The Friendly Rival character is Knuckles, who stands in opposition to Sonic even as an ally. Knuckles criticizes and challenges Sonic in ways that Tails fundamentally doesn't. There is a fundamental difference between Tails and Knuckles' dynamics with Sonic. Tails competing with Sonic, and Knuckles assisting Sonic, are very different from what the other typically does. When Tails competes with Sonic, it's to prove his own worth as someone Sonic can rely on. When Knuckles assists Sonic, it's putting his trust in someone he doesn't typically agree with.

Sonic & Shadow's dynamic as Sonic Team describes and envisions it is always a different kind of rivalry from how they describe and envision Sonic & Knuckles.
Like, for one, Knuckles is Sonic's friend, Shadow is not. Knuckles butts heads with Sonic all the time, Shadow does not care about Sonic's existence until a specific moment of conflict arises. It's Sonic who'd egg Shadow on into a competition while Shadow himself is mission-focused and prefers getting the job done, though he does acknowledge Sonic as a rival because of his own status as Ultimate Lifeform being challenged by Sonic's anomalous existence. But when it comes to Sonic and Shadow, there's a much stronger degree of separation that borders on antagonistic while with Knuckles it can get very heated but cool down just as quickly because they're ultimately bros at the end of the day even if they "hate" each other.

Sonic is, at his core, a Mickey Mouse type of character, so Amy exists to be Minnie Mouse and chase him. Sonic is like the coolest guy ever, so Tails is there as the little brother idolizing him. Sonic is as free as the wind itself, so his rival is Knuckles the immovable mountain.
If Sonic is gonna be this fairy-like character and also a spiky action hero who fights robots and gods, then his impact on the world should lead to an entire large group of action heroes like him. Like... Gurren Lagann, where Kamina's legacy brings together "Team Dai-Gurren" behind him simply because his own actions inspired many others to follow his example.
That kind of vibe elevates Sonic even higher, without making it seem like he and he alone is the only one who can do anything.
That aside, stories where it's only Sonic as a strange outlier in a normal world can work just fine. Sonic can work anywhere. I just don't want the cast we have to be wasted, and I like when there's a large cast of cool characters.

Tails is Sonic's sidekick, player 2, a kid brother whose always by Sonic's side, idolizes him, races alongside him, etc.
If another character is introduced to be a sidekick to Sonic, a kid that idolizes him, or even a "Player 2" that can race him, this will automatically overlap with Tails. This means that Tails' own character will suffer. UNLESS, this character is designed around Tails as well, or is specifically designed to not actually interfere with Tails' own status in said role.
But a degree, even Shadow overlaps with Tails, when it comes to "who is the player 2 of the series, that can keep up with Sonic and races along, and has a yellow/orange aura to match his blue". Obviously, Shadow and Tails are very different characters, but this specific point will cause issues, especially for Tails, and that's simply because Shadow is not meant to be a supporting character for Sonic or co-star alongside Sonic so closely.
With Amy & Cream, Cream was designed to be Amy's sidekick like Tails. However, despite their differing personalities, the underlying shared trait of "pure, sweet girl" that comes with the general tropes of kindness, compassion, being "nice", etc, led to Amy being written very badly by downplaying her own sweetness in order for Cream to fill that role ALONE. That was never meant to be the case when Cream was designed, but character mismanagement coupled with Sonic X trying to force Amy to be a tsundere archetype, led to that happening.
With Knuckles, the problem isn't Shadow. The problem is just Knuckles himself being severely mishandled after the adventure games. This led to his own status as "rival" being forgotten by fans as they focus solely on Shadow instead, but they project Knuckles' character onto Shadow in that case which is another layer to this problem.

Well, the starting point would have to be where Tails is at the end of the Adventure games. SA1 had him racing Sonic and outpacing him through his flight until he had to face Eggman 1 on 1 in Station Square without Sonic. SA2 took that specific turning point a step further by having Tails going mech-for-mech against Eggman with the climax being Sonic's "death" where Sonic outright says he's counting on Tails to finish this for him.
In order to actually follow up on where the Adventure games left off, the status quo has to be that Tails has effectively become a second Sonic. "Sonic 2", even... Anyway, meaning that he has proven that he can not only keep up, but possibly outpace Sonic in speed, and out-smart Eggman in the mech department. Tails has proven to be a legitimate rival for Doctor Eggman, especially. So where Sonic may go on to face even greater titans, it would be Tails who now faces Eggman on a regular basis by himself.
But that's only reaching Sonic's level. In order to truly "surpass" Sonic, he has to transcend that very status quo. The core conflict of the series between Sonic & Eggman, on both sides, has to be directly challenged by Tails. To surpass both Sonic and Eggman at the exact same time... By finding whatever kernel of truth may exist in Eggman's ambitions, and unify that with the philosophy of Sonic's life, to do what neither side ever could and change the world.
