I feel like I'm starting to realize what makes "soul"
I've heard alot of you guys say stuff like "soul is a magic word, undefined" but I think I can attempt to identify it.
My current guess is I feel like it's about the human aspect to this cold, artificial, industrial machine known as a computer
Generally the less you hang around human things the less joy you feel, the more depressed you become in other words.
Hence it makes sense that only something human can bring joy.
How did we achieve humanity inside of the computer? I think it might have to do with a kind of hand-made, geniune work being done on it.
I could be wrong, who knows, I might be stating the obvious also. Ur thoughts?
>>530807905Soul can be defined if you understand art fundamentals.
Sovl is mostly an expression of well, the sovl of the artist trying to express something.
But to have proper sovl you're required to do a contradiction, to be skilled and unskilled at the same time.
To maximize soul, your work must have all the knowledge of a master, but your work should also feel like it's done by a kid, without skills.
If you can understand how to do that, you will gain sophia and make sovl.
>>530803176>>530803480looks neat, you are going places

is he right about the engine?
>>530808312>but your work should also feel like it's done by a kid, without skillsActually, I would say you can be as skilled as you want, your skill doesn't "need to be" anything, it actually "needs to not be" something, which is, it needs to not feel like it's made by a machine.
Some highly skilled people feel like machines because of how "perfect" they are.
Anyway also I just need to say, trying to "maximize soul" is the wrong way to work. I'd say the best thing to do is not think about soul at all, just do your work as best as you can.

>>530809050that's an issue of technique.
the more technique, the less it look like it was made by an amateur.
Because technique is just a tool.
An extremelly important tool.
But technique is just the hammer and scissor you use to give shape to your idea.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrVDATvUitA
Listen to bach air on g string.
Again, soul can only be archieved by the real sovl of an artist tormented by something.
Sovl is born from a sovl purified by a lifetime of suffering, that hasn't lost the small inner candle he had as a child.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlprozGcs80
Soul is just the result of getting closer to God.
As such, maximizing sovl is how I describe getting closer to what boils down to love.
Sovl is born from love.
To other living beings, to another person, to your girlfriend, to your family, to your nation, to humanity, to a creation of qualia, to personal ideas.
You're asking the correct questions, but I am afraid you're not aware of all the shit you need to learn before you can answer what is soul.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UXQPwt0ejE
Soul is the only thing we have left after our friends and family have been burned and buried in Stalingrad and we see the horrors of war.
Soul is the only thing we have when we have been defeated so many times people keep telling you to give up.

What I want to make is an anime story where two twins, that are a classic blue and red oni, goes to a farm, and then are caught in a war, which is just a classic fantasy story where a heroe, which is just an antropomorfic bunny, engages in a story to go and fights versus armies of monsters and villains, which are other farm animals, who are actually dangerous to this bunny MC, but harmless to the twin sisters. Eventually there will be other minor farm animals giving contradictory opinions about this war, since I want to be 4 diferent stories done by 4 separated tertiary characters that happens to be the MC of their own stories, but are the narrators to the MC twins of what the MC bunny is doing.

>You actually know what the appeal of your game is>There is an under-served audience waiting for games like yours to release who will also be excited and support youI fell into this same trap at first. My early projects were just trying to find what I was good at. The moment I started my most successful project I knew from the start it'd work out because I noticed there was no real competition, just a lot of people starving for content.
My game started as a list of suggestions I gave to another developer because I wanted that sort of content but the developer wasn't doing it and I realized that it'd never get made unless I did it myself.
If someone made my game, it'd be great. Instead of wasting years to make a dream come true someone else would've put in all that effort for me. You should want the game to be made.

We need an Arab spring type event from gamedevs if anything is gonna change, we're getting destroyed by valve. Even if you're successful losing a third of your income BEFORE TAXES means that you'll be back to the rat race soon enough, it's also why so many indie games are just copies of what is successful, we devs don't have the leeway to experiment because we barely scrap by. monopoly implies the existence of a singular entity that provides said service, which in Steam's case does not happen
there are plenty of other providers like gog, itch, epic store, ubi launcher, ea launcher, battlenet, etc.

>>530830125nigga, how do you think most musicians learned music composition as kids?
They just composed and composed music until it stopped being shit.
Most of the time they learned by simply imitating their idols.
I can explain you that C F G am are the fundamentals chords of the Ionian mode, and they form a I IV V vi chord structure, which is the fundamental block of most pop songs.
I can tell you that changing the F to D will make your song go from Ionian mode to mixolydian which causes the song to become brighter because now the root is G.
But what's the point of me explaining something that can only trully be experienced by just listening the chords and seeing what happens if I write some notes using those chords.
I can't trully explain the diference between a chord progression using the lower left of the circle of fifthts versus the bottom right and the upper right of the circle.
But that would be like explaining what is the color red or the color blue to someone that has never seen colors.
You cant explain why going from A to G sounds good.
You have to simply listen a lot that shit and just spent months putting random notes on your midi piano roll to "see" music.

everything dies and kills in one hit. tougher enemies have increasingly bullshit abilities that make them harder to kill/survive, like having to do a 360 on your bmx before shooting them, or only being vulnerable on fridays.
also this but unironically but for a strategy game but i don't know how to do bosses in a satisfying way. it feels like a copout to give them a health pool and i think it'd be really unsatisfying if the condition to kill them was so specific you couldn't do anything to them for most of the fight.

>>530843045CMake is for helping with the building process, both of your own code and of libraries you compile from source. It's likely the tutorials you're using want you to use third party libraries so they recommend using CMake so it's easier to integrate them into your code.
OpenGL lets you draw triangles and stuff using the GPU
But to draw with OpenGL you first need to create an OpenGL context somehow, one of the ways is using a library like SDL or GLFW to create one for you so you don't have to do it yourself. Since the tutorials want to teach you OpenGL rather than teaching you how to use the Windows API/X11/HTML5 to create a context they recommend that you use a library that helps with that part so you can get right to using OpenGL to draw things.
Other libraries that will probably be used would be libraries to read file formats like 3D models and images like PNG or JPG because you probably also want to get right to working with OpenGL to display graphics rather than messing with reading and decoding image files to a format that OpenGL understands

I have been posting in the Amateur Steam Development General (ASDG) mostly just giving thanks & singing praise to Steam for being so generous and running their platform + business because it is such an asset to people around the world. Usually I am first to respond to the Say 3 Nice Things About Steam poster by responding with 1) kindness 2) generosity 3) benevolence.
It's been really good for my development as well since there is little debate or hostility in the thread - mostly we just work out hymns to sing the praise of a platform that we seldom deserve.
But after four weeks of posting there and becoming a pretty prolific anon for my title in development "Downloading And Appreciating Steam Simulator", I've noticed that Valve is taking one out of every three (You)s from my posts as a fee for posting on their platforms general. That's one of three (You)s gross, prior to deductions from shitposters and green texters whos low effort responses go to the jannies.
This is absolutely unacceptable, what the fuck is wrong with that general? Why would ANYONE knowingly post there at the cost of more than a third of your (You)s? I'm not posting for fucking charity, it's for engagement, I expect to get a return here. Not to mention just to be permitted to post there I had to invest a small sum by responding one (You) to the OP.
Un fucking believable that they would rip off independent /vg/ posters like this. How is this general allowed to stay up?

I know I said this last thread but I find it odd how programming, the thing I've put the most time into learning, is something I just suck at compared to stuff that I've put comparatively less time in with next to zero formal education on the subject like art, writing, and modeling.

For someone in charge of the production of a game, is it actually important to have experience making your own games and having a wide array of skills? Or do people often end up in charge just because they have good leadership skills and they delegate it to other people?
Essentially, how valuable do you think it is to be a generalist or is general leadership and management more important at a larger scale?
Fucking around with the new Howitzer weapon i added last week. That and showing off the autogun. I've been tinkering with it and the idea of making powerful weapons have a limited vertical travel arc as a form of balance is pretty good because it forces the player to go airborne and manouvre if they want to hit targets that are above them.

I was planning to start using Godot to learn (because of how "easy and fast" it is, or so I read people here say so) how to develop but there are some doubts...
Reading about godot, the first thing that appeared was that it "was woke", and there was some american political stuff (I'm not sure if the woke is left or right or republican or whatever) and a lot of people got banned from their social media so...
are there any development restrictions with this engine?
Like "if you make a game with a theme against our points of view, you'll lose the privilege to use this engine" or something?
I'm not versed in the american politics stuff (I'm not american, and we have our own issues here), and I want to know before I try to pick that one.
>>530858881>are there any dev restrictions with this engineNot really.
Just watch out for this part:
>and a lot of people got banned from their social media so...Since the documentation is lacking, you'll eventually find yourself having to join the official godot pisscord server, so play nice with them and walk on eggshells.
>>530858881>are there any development restrictions with this engine?None. It's free as in freedom.
>>530858881>>530859087Also Godot is open source, so you can do whatever you want with it including fork it into a nazi chud engine that goes against the ideology of the average godot contributor if you really wanted to.
>>530859283>forkoh... my knowledge is really limitated on that, here's another question.
do they do some frequent updates?
would those suddenly affect my game development?
like for example, I have this project, and then suddenly "an update comes" and suddenly I can't use some resource because it "became deprecated due X vulnerability" ?
I'm not sure how the updates are managed here.

>>530859694If fork is beyond your knowledge then just forget it, because even that is not necessary with the generously permissive license of Godot.
Regarding updates, I don't know why you guys update your tools so often mid-project. It's industry standard to not update game engines or other tools in the middle of a project because it usually will cause breakage eventually. You update before starting a new project, like spring cleaning, starting a new season, opening the window and getting some new air in there.
>>530859923so... there's no "if you don't add this update, you won't be able to use Y service anymore because Z things changed"?
I'm not sure if you later may need to "migrate to a more updated version due X changes", but I hope I'm just being paranoid about this stuff.

>>530850458>>530859908Thats pretty reasuring, 400 every year. It means the amount of work needed is still the same so you're only competing with 400 other devs who are putting the same amount of work you are.
Unless you're a slopdev
>>530860346Nope. It will continue to work on your machine the same way as it works now. The only catch here is if you install a Windows update that causes compatibility issues with the old Godot version, and the Godot devs have to push an update to be compatible with the new Windows update. I have no idea how common this is though. I have never seen this actually happen with a game engine unless we're talking about going from Windows XP to Windows 11.
>>530860546well, that's kind of what I was thinking might happen, but I hope it's pretty rare to do so.

>>530854016wow, this is going places
I am startled by the utter awesomeness of the side project Godot sims-like idea I just made.
>>530860703Here's some perspective that might help you: I have a project that I started in 2019 and finished in 2021. I used the same Unity 2019 version throughout the entire project. This year, 2025, I'm on a new computer and a new version of Windows. I wanted to play with the old project again, so I went and downloaded the old 2019 Unity engine. It still works exactly as it did in 2019. On the other hand, mid project I did try upgrading the engine to the 2021 version and it caused some breakage that I couldn't be bothered to fix. So I rolled back to the 2019 version.
I love it when people in gamedev circles post an idea and act like it's groundbreaking even though its something hundreds of thousands of people have thought before

>>530868630Darktide. Vermintides sort of but you can't really play 100% ranged in those.
All 3 are games where both feel pretty fucking good.
I honestly would prefer a game like FFIV or FFV if there was a single big city with 200 characters to talk to, rather than 20 towns with the same copy pasted 10 npcs.
>>530857878Maybe? I created low poly environments from my passion for their atmosphere. I don't know if you could call it "art" by any conventional definition, but I created them because I enjoyed the way looking at them made me feel. Does that count as art? I am by no means an illustrator. If illustration is the only form of art, then I'm not an artist. I still enjoy creating atmospheric environments.

Need opinions on my game.
I had the idea of a grid based game like chess.
But both players have like 16 chess pawns that can move 1 tile in all directions.
The combat between pieces happens when they overlap by moving into the other.
But.
To win the fight between two pieces, you have a 9 round game of rock papers scissors, which the one with more victories take the oponent piece.
The victory is then to whoever has the last surviving tokens in the field.
>>530867747When the gravity changes, you should project the player character's forward on the plane of the previous gravity onto the plane of the new gravity. That is your new forward setpoint. Let Cinemachine smooth the transition. (If you're not already using Cinemachine, you should be using it.)

But make the waifu enemy 16 enemy pieces, which are just 8 ortho and 8 diagonal pieces.
There will be 2 groups where one moves in one tile movement and another moves in 2 tiles.
Then the MC has a fighting game bar that allows to do a 4 tile super and charges when player moves 1 tile.
The waifu pieces will not 1KO the player, but does 1 HP damage, where they deal damage by just moving next to the MC king.

>>530875440I see.

>>530875440>>530875598>>530875665Elden Ring reused the chalice dungeon system from Bloodborne for all their minidungeons which is why they're kind of crap.
But a lot of games use proc gen in ways you wouldn't expect.
Like the entirety of the city in the Spider Man ps4 games is procedurally generated in a massive Houdini PDG graph including placement of random missions, traffic data, etc.
Far Cry 5 and Ghost Recon Breakpoint procedurally generated massive portions of their map in Houdini.
Etc
Basically I'm saying learn Houdini if you want to make a massive game as a small team.

>>530849715I am honored you remember me. Thank you.
The most important thing I have done to manage long-distance collaborations is having routine check-ins and meetings, just like you would with a regular organization in-person. Someone on the team must assume the leadership role and be prepared to wrangle the herd as needed. You will ultimately have to operate much like a boss who determines who can stay and who must go. It is unfortunate, but many people are simply not serious about things and you have to be ready to let them go. A good method is to test them with small assignments and see if they are compatible.
Incidentally, this entire skill and function within a team is often within the role of a manager, producer, or director.
>>530850079Thank you for remembering me.

>>530850238>is it actually important to have experience making your own games and having a wide array of skills? In ANY field, it is very valuable to have a leader who also has at least a general understanding of what exactly their team members all do, and the most basic level of being able to step into the assembly line when things get tough to help them do them. The more wide your skills and experience are, the more readily you can provide solutions and fix problems with your team. This sort of flexibility is a boon to any team, and helps bridge the gap between departments.
>Do people often end up in charge just because ...It's a mix of good decision making, delegation, time management, and in some cases nepotism or sycophancy. Having skills is helpful to make your team thrive more easily. Others often misjudge their own abilities. You mitigate risk.
Example: I have enough experience to know what can and cannot be done with limited resources (time included). I make executive decisions on what can be assigned within X timeframe, but things still can go wrong.
Recently in crunch, an artist was unable to meet deadline due to his own poor time management/discipline. He crashed after two days awake, and I took his unfinished work and started working on it myself hours before launch along with another teammate. Sadly, this impacted my ability to do critical checks elsewhere before something went live because I had finish to his job, which caused me to miss something I did not find until the next day after it was already shipped. Other work he was late with delayed my other tasks too. Ultimately, any failure falls on your shoulders as leader.
Other times, a programmer runs into a problem and shares it with me. I can't code much, but I understand programming logic enough to explain a solution to him that he can implement.
If your leader has this sort of cross-section of skills, he can fight on the front-lines with his troops. A generalist makes for a good general.

>>530882891I'm not sure where you are in the process of getting your game made. Is it already a game? Did you develop it already? I need more information. That being said, start by having:
>Screenshots>Video if possible>Description>Capsule / Title ArtRather than going on Steam right away, I suggest an Itch.io page first until you're ready to start collecting wishlists. You'll also need to pay Valve $100 to get your game listed.
>making your game look pretty for marketing is a lot of work. That's why people hire marketers and artists for marketing specifically.
Repurpose your game assets as much as possible to save money on this.
>>530883540Yes. This is a great approach if you are capable of getting it in clear writing and signed by all parties, so long as all parties are committed and equally engaged in the work. There must also be a clause that forfeits some portion of their share if they do not meet their obligations.
Ultimately, it is a trust exercise in many ways. It'll require parties to share legal names, addresses, etc. Be prepared for this.
>>530885487Depends on what your competition is defined as. More output? More sales?
You can make a game totally solo and blow away AAA companies, so rethink your position a bit.

I've added the successful interception functionality. Also the UI updated as the block calculation subtracts from the pass power. There's a small animation that players after the blocker grabs the ball.
Next I have to fix a few bugs as the opposite team cannot pass for some reason. Afterwards it will be the 'tackle' move to add.

I unironically have a winner design for an original abstract strategy game.
Basically the rules are:
>One player has the king
>The AI has 16 pieces
>It's a 7x7 board
>Corners are blocked
>Player moves in 1 tile
>Player has a 5 points bar to fill to do his hero attack where he can kill enemy pieces in a 3 linear range attack jump
>AI player has 8 pieces that move in ortho and 8 that moves in diagonal, half of them move in 1 tile jumps and the other half moves in 2 tiles jumps
>Enemy pieces hit the player if they bounce with it, dealing 1 HP
>Player dies if he's hit 5 times
>AI moves by picking a random piece with a dice look up based on current enemy count of alive pieces and then move 1 or 2 tiles towards the player

>>530892093>it said it was made in C++, all the files are Lua filesAre you sure the lua files constitute the whole program? It seems far more likely that you have a c++ linking the lua library and then it runs the lua code as scripts. what happened to the new thread
>>530897943the spam bot started posting cp because of the op or something so jan nuked it
>>530892787Yeah so unless you have some c++ source files you only have the compiled executable and the scripts. Your executable links with the lua library so it is able to interpret the scripts. This allows you change runtime behavior by manipulating the lua files. The executable loads these scripts when the program starts (or at some point while its running).
If you ant to learn more about how this works watch these

https://youtu.be/KsZLPTRSleI?feature=shared
Standard/official Lua compiles to bytecode to use on a vm. Standard lua is not JIT (not directly compiled to machine code but bytecode instead). There is a JIT Lua compiler though and its popular.
Lua is an embedded language in C. This means you can write C programs that can interpret lua. This is done by linking the lua library. The lua interpreter itself links this library.
