If Sonic is the wind, then Tails is the sky. The heavens. But what IS the Heavens? The Realm of the Gods. Usually, that comes with a level of authority ruling over all of creation or whatever. Which, if framed in an antagonistic light, would translate into an even bigger Eggman. But in that case, just defeating him by being a representation of "Freedom" is not enough. This is greater than that.
This is a level where the solution would have to lie somewhere in-between Sonic's own freedom and Eggman's desire for order and control or whatever. There needs to be order in the world for civilization to thrive, but every individual must have the freedom to live how they want. Both are true. But basically, where Sonic simply destroy Eggman's mechs and moves on, Tails is the one who could rebuild it in a "better way".
Neo metal is so wasted, He should be like the Wesker or Sephiroth to Sonic's Chris or Cloud. Instead he remains as Eggmans crippled lapdog.

Sonic isn't a work of passion; it's a long-running video game series made by a corporation. It will necessarily chase trends to appeal to newer audiences, and thus, change its characters accordingly. There's literally nothing wrong with that, as that's basically what comics like DC and Marvel do with their characters, where it's just an all-you-can-eat buffet for whatever headcanon the current writer has. Like, imagine if Batman fans were as hyper-fixated on "Canon" as Sonicfags, how would that even make any sense?

Shadow with half-lidded eyes is not OOC. He is a serious, pragmatic character who is always on alert mode. Or at least that's just the surface level of it. It should not be his default expression, but to say he should never make that face reduces him to a robotic war of weapon. This defeats the entire point of SA2/Battle/Shth05/Gens, which is that he is a living being with a heart that cares (both Sonic and Maria have directly told him this). Shadow is an unreliable narrator with genuine emotional slip-ups that reveal he's far more complex than he appears at face value.
What makes this Sonic Heroes scene so great and iconic is that this is Shadow slowly remembering who he is.This is his first time facing Sonic since the events of SA2. Shadow being smug and overly-competitive with him has nothing to do with his mission. He's doing this out of his own volition. The half-lidded expression isn't off-model or a mistake. It is a deliberate hint that he's not an android, but the real Shadow after all.

I love Shadow's eyes, fangs, soft chest fur, and the stripes running up his arms and legs, and his cute perky tail and triangle ears that droop or fold back a little when he's tense or sad. I love his mannerisms and his tense swayed-back posture.
I also think his voice is really hot. In SA2 he's got a little British accent, and he's so eloquent, I wish he'd read me a dictionary.
Personality-wise, he's so cold and strong but strangely innocent at the same time. He's truly a good boy deep down, and when the goodness pokes through his otherwise threatening demeanor it's a nice treat. He's pure in his own way.
Mostly I just want to pull him onto my lap and feel his fur and cuddle him so he feels loved. His life was and is way too rough for a single person to reasonably handle alone.

Sonic is a Japanese shonen story where you beat up your enemies until they're either friends, dead, or forgotten about. The second category doesn't come up that much so mostly friends or not showing up.
POTC is an adventure story with twists, turns and an ongoing plot, which means that while you have Will Turner as our main hero for the first three films, he plays our straight man, an outsider to the world of piracy, with everyone else being some sort of bastard or loosened morals when it comes to getting whats important to them, such as Elizabeth, Norrington, or a direct enemy, such as Davy Jones, Barbossa and Beckett.
Sonic can't work on this due to Sonic being a hero in his world, and unless he gets transported into a world where everyone is a bastard such as the world of POTC provides, then POTC is always going to have more "villains"
This isn't some failing on Sonic, not every story is measured by the amount of villains it has. There are great stories with only 1 villain and some with none.
