This is going to sound retarded to anyone in the know but was all lighting in the PS2/Wii era "faked" with texture maps?
Like, there's no global light, or light nodes that change dynamically.

iirc SotC uses a stretched out transparent model of the main character that's darker to imitate cast shadows, I'd count that as fake too

I have a theory that you guys might not want to hear, but tell me if you think it's bullshit.
I think there's an inherent difference between competent developers and incompetent developers.
An incompetent developer can grow into a competent developer, but they do it through self-introspection and thought, not by being taught by others.
A competent developer is one who is self-critical and scrutinizes every decision about his game, whereas with an incompetent dev, you'd need to point out to him big clear flaws with his game that he just can't see.
Competent devs have strong directions and goals, when you play their games, you'd have to nitpick very little, "rough edges" type stuff, but you can't criticize it much because they know what they're doing. They know their direction and you don't need to set them back on it, they can do it on their

I was going to use SDL3 for last DD but there was a lot of new stuff to learn, but with the simple hello world that I did with Raylib was enough.

I only know one hardware limitation that Raylib has, but I still don't know how much can be done with it.

friendslop aren't games so much as they are virtual spaces where people can spend time with their friends. friends as a concept refers to people one enjoys spending their time with ergo time spent with them is always fun by default, otherwise they wouldn't be friends because friends are defined as people you enjoy spending your time with.

when friends are combined with games, or "games" as i like to call them, this leads friendslop players to associate positive feelings related to spending time with friends with the friendslop product itself, and this lends the product a halo which blinds friendslop players with low intelligence from their flaws.

friendslop games don't evoke emotions outside of sillyness. they're poorly produced but. friendslop horror games aren't scary, they're fun, which leads one to wonder why they would play a horror game that isn't scary. broken physics, bad graphics, characters warping through walls, and other jank of that ilk, that often lead to a squad wipe for sic
"bullshit reasons," that rightly should be considered production flaws and that the developers should be berated for, not lauded.

however, due to the friendslop players being influenced by the friendship phenomena, these flaws are considered funny moments that can be shared on social media for upvotes provoking viewers to post vulgar comments like "23:55 made me laugh so much I peed a little :joy:", sharing the product to their own friends leading to widespread virality and leading to untold riches for the product's owners that managed in no way to contribute to the advancement of the arts, forever to remain as idle pastime to be forgotten the following week after product consumption.

A 3x3 chunk radius is constantly loaded around the player with the player obviously always in the center chunk. Going from Door A to Door B is no problem at all because the chunks are already loaded. Going from Door 1 to Door 2 seems to be impossible. I've tried making Door 1 load up Door 2's chunk before you walk through it and, while it works, does not work going back the other way. Every method I've tried at best works in only 1 direction or at worst sends me into the void. Real head scratcher...

That sounds like it works for a smaller team. At larger scales I imagine you just get the contacts guy to call up a contract artist to finish it or assign someone.
So in that case it'd be less about how to do it and more about scope management, I bet you could learn that without learning all the individual skills, but learning the individual skills would help. I imagine those in charge of AA studios at least have a good concept of scope for each task.

enjoying fun isn't a prerequisite for empathy. fun is the least worthy and valuable emotion. there's no acclaimed piece of literature about fun while there are a million about things like love, loss, revenge and so on.

that's why i prefer investing my time in stories that provide immersion in various situations, it is precisely for that reason that i despise co-op games. as an example, i'll give system shock 2. those of you who have played it know how thick it is in atmosphere. i recommended it to one of my friends at the time. he wanted to play it in co-op. in case you didn't know, for some god forsaken reason ss2 has a 1-4 player co-op mode. when i refused, as having fun on skype would ruin the atmosphere of an impeccable, immersive horror game for him, he never ended up playing it.

Don't think of it as making shovelware for a quick buck, but rather as making the base framework that will allow you to iterate and expand your original concept into ever increasing larger games.

It's basically a shogi-style game, with a 4x4 palace and river like in xiangqi, where the king can summon 16 different types of pieces โ€” up to 16 times each โ€” so he has a "deck" of around 200 pieces to summon from. You get two actions per turn, which can be any combination: two summons, two moves, one move and one summon, or an attack and a summon, or a move and an attack.

The king can only summon pieces while inside the palace. If he's outside the palace, he can instead charge up a spell to kill an enemy piece that has crossed the central river.

However, each piece is actually a card from a TCG featuring anime isekai girls, each one inspired by one of 16 historical empires.

You need to define a custom function for adding your buttons. You'll need a callback function, call it "button_hovered" or "button_clicked"
This function should take as an argument, the button.
Now, you need to connect your buttons with a signal. It's as simple as button.connect("pressed/hovered/etc", self, "_button_pressed/hovered/etc, the callback function", [button])
Now you have a singular function that gets called whenever your buttons are pressed or hovered or whatever, and you can just check the button object being passed to it to find out which sound to play. You could use a lookup table, dictionary, something like that, to associate a button with its sound. If you want them all to play the same sound, then just do that. I hope you understand.

Over and over we see iterations on the classic isometric games of the late 90s and early 2000s, but instead of using a deliberate & kino art style with palletized sprites and tilemaps we get 3d slop. Instead of snappy grid based gameplay we get move_and_slide() floaty slop.
This applies to RTS as well as orblikes, every single time someone tries to "improve" on them by sucking out the fundamental things that made them good.
It would unironically kill 3d fags and modern engine sloppers to concede that characters do not need to be able to turn and face a full 360 degree spectrum.
Even in top down shooters that previously had much of the difficulty and skill come from the fact that you can only aim in a few fixed directions, typically 8, but now every indie pixel shitter has a freely rotating gun that only has one mirrored sprite, making the entire gameplay loop about invincibility rolling and looking like absolute shit while doing do.

nta but because i wanted to finish my game within my lifespan. its true that prerendered gfx are better but at the same time i can bang out a 3d model of an item in 15minutes and get it game ready in 5 because i'm at least somewhat familiar with 3D modeling. doing it with sprites would take forever and look worse unless i had a dedicated guy to handle that aspect

The models are easier to bang out because they look better without a bunch of noisy details. You make your animations, and a script renders it all out. You use another script to make the sheets.

how do I light my scene? I have no sky in my game and want my area to be lit. What do? It's all dark.
I tried adding fog but I only liked dark fog which doesn't help with lighting.
I tried a directional light but it only lights up the parts that are in it's "target", other sides of objects remain black.
I tried a gradiant sky, but all objects adopted the exact color of the white gradient in a strange way.

I'm at a total loss, I don't want to put a million real time lights into my scene, I'm on unity. What do?

At max range only the vertical axis is small, not the horizontal one. Another thing: I don't take air resistance into account. It would change the projectile's trajectory by a lot and probably increase the vertical axis of the ellipse too. I have air resistance as a stretch goal but to be honest I don't think I'll ever get to it. I'm pretty happy with how the projectiles currently behave.

Write the best short story you can in 200 words. It makes you consider every word you put on the page and how it's important to the overall story. Then expand that to 1 page, then 5 pages, and so on. It doesn't have to be the same story expanded, you can do something different each time. You could even shrink the scope to lower than 200 words to challenge yourself.
The point is to learn how to develop and progress a narrative in a meaningful way. The pitfall a lot of inexperienced writers fall into is just writing whatever pops into their head which creates a tangled mess of a plot that eventually become impossible to work with (at least in any coherent way).

NTA, but IMO the main feature you want out of any editor is hot reloading and tuning of parameters while running the game (i.e. the inspector). It makes development so much faster than needing to rebuild and rerun as you tweak values.

The Godot editor is specifically is also a great IDE. Its autocompletes are context aware of the scene tree and project filesystem. It includes lots of nice gamedev specific IDE features that you wouldn't get when you need to use a generic IDE. Things like the inline-color picker.

I don't know much about Godot, it makes sense there cause it uses its own language, but for Bevy - you can't beat RustRover at features for Rust. And they're not gonna have a built-in IDE. You should rather make a RustRover plugin for Bevy-specific stuff if need be.

You can hot reload any asset already. Hot-reloading Rust code though in general is another tricky and complicated story, Dioxus (and its subsecond module which can get integrated with Bevy) can sort of do that, but very limited and shitty rn. An editor would not help there.
As for inspecting values at runtime with nice GUI - maybe, but an editor is overkill, there's plugins that do that for you and are nice, like bevy_egui_inspector

The problem with an editor is that it would need to serve everyone's use case, which is antithetical to Bevy's philosophy of being a highly modular engine. You're gonna have to wire your own solution of different crates together anyway - and I'd rather do that, than try to bend an opinionated and bloated editor into serving my specific use case.

Rust just isn't great for development speed, as it's designed for safety, not liveness. For gamedev, you really want access to fast iteration with some kind of scripting language such as Lua. I played around with this now-dead framework back in the early days of rust and haven't gone back since: https://github.com/amethyst/amethyst

Another great feature about the Godot editor is that it's super easy to create your own custom tooling or modify existing tooling to suit your needs. It's so easy that even Cris is able to do it. The Godot editor is created the same way as any Godot game, using the same UI components. Any editor plugin you download comes as source code, so you can instantly modify anything in it.

I read an article recently after seeing one of the neuralink demos. The progress they've made is amazing. We've gotten to the point where they've mapped peoples thoughts, video game inputs and brainwaves. Meaning you can just make a thought about moving and it'll translate to machine input.

The article goes into more detail. But I'm predicting once neuralink gets a public demo and valves solution gets further popularity as an alternative we're going to see brain input controllers pretty soon.

I need some opinions.

Is there a VN where the story behaves more like kof 2002?

What I mean is that there's a big number of female characters, but only like 5 are avaible in a single playtrhought.

Let's say there are 50 female characters, but only 5 are available, but each character has like some extra chapters they get triggered depending if on the selected list of girls, there's like one they really hate or there's another they really love.

Imagime by example, Girl A has a hate relationship with Girl B and this trigger a fight between them, but if there's like Girl C she will react to that fight.

But if Girl B is replaced with Girl D, that fight isn't triggered, but maybe there's a diferent chapter with girl C and D having some banter exchange.

Nope. UI (data visualization/manipulation) is everything the player sees, but there's a lot of stuff "under the hood" (data transformations, read only data) that can be very complex, very large, and a big part of the game.
Back in the 90s people would joke that buying a game CD was mostly just buying an audio track with a game on top because something like 60-90% of the actual data storage on the disk could be taken up by the audio data (read only data), meaning UI could end up being only 10-30% of the game.

You seriously should have took more time writing that question because I have no idea what you are trying to accomplish. When a volume slider is set to its min value, meaning the sound is not audible, should we add a method to no longer play the sound at all? Because effectively it seems the sound is still playing even though it can't be heard.

Don't bother. It's a trivial amount of CPU%. I just tested it and playing 60 SFX per second only consumes around 5-7% CPU. Realistically, you're playing only maybe 1-3/sec max, costing 0.1-0.3% CPU.

Made quite a bit of progress this week, despite slacking off a bit.
-enemy AI updated, now filters and excludes dead units.
-fixed a bunch of animation bugs, mostly around units dying and coming back. Animation blueprints suck.
-a lot of material prep work and level set-up for a new area, the deadplane ziggurat
-UI updated for teleporting menu.
-torch fuel draining now ticks of in-world time rather than real world seconds (to prep for players being able to set their desired in-world time scale)
-combat scenarios can now be paused without crashing the game
Have some moving images for the image board. Hope you had a good read, anon, and make lots of progress!

Game is GloamSnarl, first-person dungeon crawler with some extra light platforming/climbing, time/weather system, pseudo-openworld, and you play as sick monster races like skeletons, onis, gnolls, goblins slimes, etc. Pretty in-depth character building: 8 races, 12 classes, each of which has 3 sublasses.
Have most of the foundational/alpha stuff done, trying to crank out content so there's interesting stuff to test.

Just an unsolicited opinion:
-instead of branching, pipe the boolean directly into the set node.
-you already have a hard cast for player controller, use a reroute node to get the interface call target down the line

If you want even cleaner node maps, create some interfaces off the gamemode and controller and you won't have to cast. Wont save memory load iirc, but it looks nicer and makes the event graphs lighter weight.

Both of you need to mentally make the distinction between a ROTATION and an ORIENTATION. In linear Cartesian space, you can think of this as the difference between a TRANSLATION and a POSITION. You can represent a position as a translation relative to the origin the the same way you can represent an orientation as a rotation relative to the origin. You shouldn't be saving ROTATION values (i.e. any kind of "angle", including Euler angles). Rotations are not supposed to be state. They're supposed to be saving ORIENTATION values, which you already are in the form of the camera's quaternion. You should be performing all your math relative to that quaternion, not some internal rotational angle values that you created.

z axis isnt used in the rotation, what im trying to do is basically have arbitrary gravity, and to rotate the camera to align with it, so if gravity changes to the ceiling, the ceiling is now the floor from the players perspective.
the issue comes in however, when the camera rotates it changes where the player is looking. if the player is looking at an apple and gravity changes they need to still be looking at that apple even if gravity has done a 180.

The orientation is already saved as a quaternion by Unity which confusingly named the property "rotation" like a bunch of retards. You can rotate it by multiplying the quaternion of the rotation you want or with built in functions like RotateAround. Basically, delete whatever the xRot and yRot values you had, and write your function without it.

None of the Nerds before me have the slightest clue about writing. There are many scaffold concepts where you can just plug in characters and circumstances from your fantasy. For your First Story, pull up " the heroes journey" on Google, that is the most Common scaffolding concept, and write a Story with that. Then choose another concept, then another and see what type of Story you like writing most.
