Rom sites may come and go, but emulation never dies!
Hey! Where can we download some Nintendo Switch games for free? I'm just an emulation dude just like you that just want to play a pirated copy of The Legend of Zelda on my Windows PC with a free emulator program.
Cheers. Happy emulation.

does hdr improve visuals at all for emulation (mostly nes through ps2)?
>>530982603I never liked this complaint, a lot of remasters, mods, etc always overtune all the things that never needed tuning. Usually because it's usually never the original developer who makes the "updates", but even if it was they let the corporate rot infest their decision making to appeal to lowest common denominator at the risk of the actual quality of the game. When you do shit like that, you remove the nuance or things to appreciate about something just for the sake of consuming it easier, quicker, and with less thought. Not to defend every single original port out there, there are plenty that were genuine hardware limitations (Sonic Unleashed is an immediate example I can think of) but everything else you mentioned is just autistic preferences.
Does this game just run poorly or is it the emulator? I am on retroarch with 3 different cores and it goes slow motion in a lot of areas.
>>531049048It's the game. It was an unfinished/unreleased pile of shit that Capcom Japan pawned off on their US branch. It wasn't even meant to be a contra game.
>>531049048It's the game. It was an unfinished/unreleased pile of shit that Konami Japan pawned off on their US branch. It wasn't even meant to be a contra game.
>The game was scheduled to be released in Japan under the title of Arc Hound (ใขใผใฏใใฆใณใ, ฤku Haundo), with no ties to the Contra series, but was cancelled.
It's an unfinished build of a cancelled game that had nothing to do with Contra.
>>531044428Depends, generally no because it's just postprocessing and not hdr from the engine itself like you can see on some modern games or with Renodx's native HDR mods (pic rel)
post processing HDR does nothing but make anything white or near white go full brightness, it's not real hdr, mostly useless and if anything hurts any games with white text on the UI. That is true for Autohdr/RtxHdr and also Retroarch or Dolphin's own hdr conversion options. When a game has proper HDR the UI has it's own brightness option so your oled and your eyes don't get destroyed for nothing (pic rel is an example of proper hdr, see the flames are 4000nits but the UI is at a normal brightness, this is impossible to get with postprocessing hdr methods)
Proper hdr displays are basically just OLEDs anyway and they give you 1/3 of the hdr effect automatically even on SDR content due to their perfect blacks. So there's little point in thinking about it..
HOWEVER some CRT shaders are meant for HDR and you get higher brightness through the scanlines which is great, and more vibrant colors, while likely still staying accurate. For emulation this is the best use for hdr imo.
If you have an LCD display with good FALD I would also just use HDR as much as possible, it would be an improvement in general since that'll get you more contrast and better blacks.
So if you want to use post process hdr despite the limitations you can also simply set the peak brightness to 200-300 nits in Retroarch or Dolphin, this way you get more brightness in general and better colors without getting 1000 nit text boxes.

EMULATION!
Let's say I've found a fork of an emulator which might fix some issues when running on my computer, but this fork has 0 stars on GitHub, so for all I know, the fork could contain malware.
Should I give it a shot? Or do you think it's a risk?
>>531104114I'd either go the virustotal route, or GPT the source. (I'm a retard though, so take my word for a grain of salt.)
>>531104114Run a file compare against the original source and manually check every difference, then compile it yourself once you've deemed it safe.
>>531104319Those could work, thanks for the suggestions. I assume most antiviruses just check for known bad files though... so if a piece of malware is not widespread, maybe antiviruses won't know about it. I dunno, maybe I should look into that more, because maybe it doesn't work like that.
>>531105347This fork doesn't have builds so I would have to compile it. I could look at every commit added to the fork but that's tedious. I could just compile it then run the binary through VirusTotal, and hope that antiviruses would catch it, if it had something bad in it.
I'd like to personally thank everyone who's contributed bug reports to the list. Especially things like Return Fire. I'm not familiar with the game and would never have even know it was missing level music. Doing the right thing in the face of pure evil is a selfless act.

>>531140858>illegally relicensing quackstation? There is no reason to do anything illegal, just grab the last codebase before the license change, what was it before? MIT?

Only reason anyone would want to fork Duckstation is if the original got abandoned AGAIN and for good, and/or if it became broken to the degree even the average retard would consider unacceptable. As it is, forking it sounds like a recipe for endless drama.

>>531145930It has always been its toy since the beginning. I'm pretty sure he only open-sourced it because some of the code he put in it at the beginning must have come from other emulators.

>>531156816The overall quality of the games aside, I at least appreciate that they managed to release a proper, consistent trilogy.
>>531163786It better be good at that price
>>531175387It is good but nothing's worth that price.
I used to use project64 or whatever when I was younger.
But I got myself a bunch of romhacks. And was instructed to get gliden64. But what even is gliden64? Does not appear to be an emulator, so what, how, and why do I use it?
But I also read about this Parallel Launcher. Is that something I actually want to use or should I use something else?
>>531185041GlideN64 is a RSP (N64 graphics chip) plugin and renderer to be used with P64 or Mupen. It's the modern standard for conventional GPU HLE (translating N64 draw calls to modern graphics card ones), the real state of the art is the ParaLLEl renderer which uses that "compute" of your graphics card to render in a way truer to the N64. More like an accelerated software mode. Parallel Launcher is just a front end to launch an N64 emulator with GlideN64 (HLE) or Parallel (LLE)
I don't really bother with Launcher, just use Project64 Luna Edition for HLE or Ares for LLE.
Hacks, especially wilder ones like KazeEmunaur's, tend to run a little better on Project64, so just get Project64 Luna.
>>531185496*emanuar, it's too early for names like that.
I actually use Mupen64Plus in Retrosharts but I think recommending it would just discourage you trying N64 emulation, and it also fails to run hacks like the RTYI demoJust use Luna for hacks, Ares for commercial games.
>>531049048This game is a perfect match for the Sega Genesis and should've been released for it. Of course with better graphics and sound. Even on the SNES it'd have slowdowns, see Contra 3.

I feel like a retard by asking, but can you reliably play a baseball game on PCSX2 using keyboard and mouse? When I used keys for the analog stick the bat would move in the extreme directions and the mouse constantly moves back to the center, making aiming impossible.
>>531225145Yeah but Xbox killed its mindshare with the Xbox One so nobody cares about it I guess. Honestly it wasnโt that bad at the beginning because they still pushed out games but once Mattrick was gone it was over since Spencer just continued the damage Mattrick did + no gaems. Iirc the OG Xbox also uses off the shelf parts vs the Plsystation 2's custom hardware.
>>531234734>OG Xbox also uses off the shelf partsYeah but at least Xemu is decent, Xenia is a complete mess.
anyone with a 9800x3d that can comment on totk performance? Are you able to get 1440p@60fps?
Maybe it's just me, but input lag-wise, latest nightly 86Box feels even smoother than before. Supposedly they made some improvements to the OGL backend, and with VSync off and sync to video on, mouse movement feels as close to 1:1 as I've ever felt it.
>>531239646I think it's their new dynarec, those devs seem to be cooking.
>>531156729Mednafen has its own edge cases, like Monkey Hero. Downsampling doesn't work as well in some games, like in MGS the radar's a bit fucked up. You also can't run the hardware renderer ahead like you can in Swanstation. They're pretty comparable, though. If I only need software mode I'll use the soft-mednafen core.
>>531241564Mednafen should stop edging and start gooning.
>>531234734>off-the-shelfSort-of. The custom GF3.5-ish GPU soldered into the mobo and into a unified pool of RAM was a bit novel. Allowed it to punch above many PCs (RAM amount aside) til the 9700 hit. The APIs were similar to what was used on contemporary PCs, though.

>>531239646I've found a (somewhat) Win98 compatible mouse reaction test that can be used to compare between 86box settings and also between guest and host, as it runs in modern operating systems as well. You do need to install KernelEX w/ Win2K mode set in the program properties, but it works fine after.

When I set 86box to use the OGL renderer, fullscreen it, set guest to 100hz so it runs in VRR in my host's 120hz mode, install a logitech PS2 driver in guest that allows me to use a 100hz poll rate, I get results very close to native.

>>531266093>>531239646https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=r15032
This is the driver I used in Win98, which allows you to disable acceleration and increase the poll rate within the mouse settings. PS2Rate has been janky for me, causing the mouse to go haywire when I launch it or put it in startup now and then.
>>531225145>standard PowerPC CPU archIs it? It's still a custom multi-core multi-threaded PPC part not seen in many machines. The most comparable CPU is the Cell honestly.
>It's just a DX9 GPUNot exactly, the API was extended beyond DX9 somewhat, and the GPU used a unified pool of RAM and additional eDRAM which gave it a ton of bandwidth between it and the CPU. PC ports running well weren't a given because of these differences.
Looking back the 360 was ridiculously powerful for 2005, and it would have been respectable if it didn't melt itself. Probably just needed a few more months or QA.

I just dunno if I believe in intentional PS1 emu breaks done to inflate the market. There's so many emus, both open and closed source, by different dudes that get it 95% right. They each have their own 5%, and of that 5% user tweaks like fast-boot and a clock adjustment can work around most of it, or normies can live with the minor issues. >>531225145>Really weird how the more complex and obscure console got better emulation in the end with RPCS3Rpcs3 is just a tier above in the garbage tier. At least xenia doesn't introduce weekly regressions. Oh, and you can actually play resonance of fate in xenia unlike the elad experience.
>>531225145This is why recompilator for X360 was made.
I've been out of the loop for a bit (I go back to the PocketGo and the Retroid and all that) but did we ever get to a handheld device that can reliably run Gamecube games? Or is it just a Steam Deck/ROG Ally/whatever?
>>531225145Turns out the only thing that matters is having a fan base. Same reason the OG Xbox emulation is still in an absolute state despite being basically a PC. No one gives a fuck. The people who would buy these consoles never cared about gaming to begin with.
>>531326262If it was basically a PC, virtualizing or wrapping it would have been done. The hardware and software is just different and undocumented enough.
It's not about interest. The Xbox was probably more successful than the GameCube in the west yet the GC is emulated far better. Xemu is at the point now where you can bet on most things being playable with minor-to-annoying issues though.
Where's the update about it being a BIOS problem? Isn't it about informing the users and interested devs?

>>531331054Agreed, I just don't think this is a CDi/Nuon situation where it just needs a Whitehouse to just do it. I think enough skillful people have given it their best shot, but custom GPU/API stuff is a bitch, especially when it's tied to the system's memory and meant to communicate so rapidly with the CPU. Otherwise we'd have something like Teknoparrot or a "hackintosh" style setup you could install on any PC with close enough specs.
>>531326804>muh documentationEvery console is undocumented. Xbox IS basically a PC and virtualization was the first kind of emulation it got.
The truth is simply that no one gives a fuck about Xbox, it was some dudebro console that only sold in burgerland.
>>531331881>Every console is undocumentedNot really, plenty of official and unofficial dev manuals get leaked.
>>531331881>the non-standard GPU and API totally doesn't matterYeah and how good was that virtualization setup? How many games does it run?
Am I to believe people give more of a fuck about all these literally-who PCBs that run perfectly in MAME than the Xbox? Games played by literally dozens in some cases? Modern/custom GPU stuff is just magnitudes harder, you stupid fuck.
Am I to believe people give more of a fuck about all these niche games people barely know exist in Teknoparrot that run on far more powerful hardware? Hmm, it's like they're emulated because it's easier. Xbox is not a niche system at fucking all.
>>531332108And it barely helps. And not every console gets a oman.
>>531332403It was shit but worked well enough for what it was. Every console has non-standard GPUs and APIs, yet Xbox is the only one so close to a PC it could be virtualized. Why it didn't get better and modern emulation doesn't get better? Because no one gives a fuck. Go check how many people are trying to reverse engineer the hardware, check how many people are contributing to xemu. Meanwhile Sony, Nintendo and Sega consoles got entire hacking forums.
>>531333027I don't know what you're bitching about anyway, Xemu has improved loads in the last year and you can probably run whatever in it now. I just played Wreckless which uses the GPU in all sorts of funky ways and Unreal Championship 2. They have minor issues each.
In a couple of years high-end FPGAs will become affordable and we will no longer have to depend on software emulation.
>>531333635>he doesn't know it's still emulation>he doesn't know that the existence of the FPGA doesn't mean a perfect core manifestsIn 10 years, maybe. Can't wait to see what the DE10 successor costs for the first few years too.
>>531333429Most games are broken in a way or another. And I'm not bitching, I'm just explaining why Xbox emulation is so relegated in general, despite none of the consoles being PS3 tier complex. It just doesn't have the mindshare Sony/Nintendo/Sega has.
We also don't know how fPGA-ing a modern-ish GPU will go. The closest evidence we have is the N64 core which is a hackfest. I am jealous of how close that core comes to running Body Harvest properly, though
>>531333635>he doesn't knowFPGA cores are just emulators in VHDL, some are straight up ports or using big portions of PC emu ported code lmao
Barely any real benefits over emulation. They aren't doing gate level emulation like most tech illiterates are led to believe.
>>531333928True, but I think it has *enough* mindshare to get the job done if it was surmountable as PS2/GC. Sega also has some never-ever gaps, like Hikaru. DC emulation was also wanky til Flycast matured a few years ago.
>>531333635>>531333942I would be happy with a FPGA powerful enough to emulate 6th gen and older, I already have a jailbraked PS3 and X360, got both at thrift shops for cheap.
>>531334298We'll see how fPGAs handle advanced graphics chips like EE and Flipper, and a custom Geforce 3.5 that'll be something lol. The one thing I'll give the fPGA scene is that the interest it drums up leads to emulation improvements across the board.
>>531334298You can still find PS2s and GCs for cheap (under 100 bucks) at thrift shops and and even some vidya stores.

It at least works perfectly in Xemu now. It was fucked up bad a year or two ago. Incredibly middling action game and oh god the stupid western-game "punched up" one-liners. Try to remember every fan of this show back in the day: how many of them are in polyamorous relationships or are some person of gender/sexuality? 90%?
Buffy was redd*t before redd*t. It was all there. The heckin Marvel quips, the grrl-power, sticking it to toxic masculinity, the fag shit. It was extremely foreshadowing of modern 'nerd' culture. At least Whedon liked his girls skinny, and we were spared modern beauty standards.

Is there a list anywhere explaining what Libcrypt specifically does in each game? I know a lot of them just crash on a loading screen but some are more elaborate. Lucky Luke Western Fever for example has missing graphics and softlocks you by not letting you talk to an NPC. I was trying Technomage in Ares which doesn't support SBI and I don't THINK libcrypt would bug out the graphics like this but I can't be certain and so I won't report it.

Do any of you guys use the LG V60 or G8X with the dual screen case for 3DS and stuff?
I don't have a Bluetooth phone grip controller yet, but I figured I might as well just start using it with the touch screen to play 3DS jrpgs, but I can't really figure out how to get the screens setup good with Azahar and all the halfass "guides" online that I've seen are so old that they're really no help.
(The thing that's really annoying about these phones with the dual screen case is you need this homebrew app to get most applications to display across both properly, you constantly have to re-enable it, and it's very finicky with crashes and stuff.)

Nevermind I think libcrypt is something older and in more games. I think PE2 used a more modern scheme.
Sounds like libcrypt was more of a Euro thing, and PE2 was indeed something different, maybe proprietary/unique. I could swear 3-4 other games at the time used something similar.
I now suppose libcrypt explains why most cigposts are European gamss. Just another thing to worry about when emulating them. Luckily most Euro games are bad if their native to the region, and run at the wrong speed if imported from outside the region.

>>531897545It's kind of like download-play. You can purchase Namco Museum and then download a free app that allows you to play Pac-Man VS. on another switch without having to own two copies.

KEK, That's a major step up from DeSmeMEfag.
>>531896216Logic dictates that if you want to play any Switch game online, you will need to use Nintendo's infrastructure, which you're wholly bypassing while emulating. If any emulator supports online play--as you and others have alluded to, it's either from a LAN standpoint, or you and whomever, need to setup a VLAN with software like Hamachi (assuming they're still kicking around).
Bottomline, you can't have your cake and eat it too, not unless you're willing to come up with your own recipe and bake it from scratch.
Mind, this is all conjecture--I'm not entirely familiar with that particular emulator. Much of this is from past experience.
Anyone know if the other saturn cores on retroarch run Baroque better than beetle saturn? was always told this was the best saturn core but it has horrible audio latency on this one game no matter how much I tinker with the latency settings, and lag. You could also check RA's audio driver settings. Try WASAPI with picrel settings. Also, is it lag, or sub-60fps chop? Have you made sure the game's running at full speed? Run-ahead is very heavy on medsat, but top of the line >=Zen4 CPUs can do it.
ShaderGlass is pretty good at stapling shaders on to anything, but with a very minor lag penalty. Works great these days, but obviously Retroarch is best where it works.

>>532050158That's not exactly what I was trying to say? My point is that an emulation raw screenshot does a poor job at reproducing how the game really looks like in reality on the intended hardware of the time.
The game would look good regardless of the scale of the display as long as it crt, and there's way more value to crts than just displaying scanlines, there's more going on that could blend the game's assets into lookin' gud
>>532051213Yeah, you should have explained yourself a lot better.
>>532035362Yeah, that's what I was trying to do with
>>532018220I used the original 480p framebuffer, XBR'd the sprites, then downsampled it to 360p-ish with scanlines to hide the filter-slop on the sprites. This is as close to a cohesive image as I could get out of the game. Better than the original seen here
>>531863686 where it's mixed res mugen-tier crap. At least in my opinion.
>>532040693I half-agree but integer usually means wasted screen real estate. Sharp-bilinear can fill the screen as much as possible, reserving aspect ratio and preserving the pixel grid. Some people just desire that over a subjective CRT look and it's probably better for screenshots. I'll run shaders over 240p games all day, though.
>>532039905Even better when you can downsample and have crisp sprites with antialiased backdrops in the same resolution.
>>532034428Well yeah on a small-ish CRT with composite cables it'll all the mixed res assets will just get blurred down. Sort of. You can still see it if you look for it. On VGA/emu it's super obvious how the sprites are lower res than the HUD and backdrops, and worse, some sprites are higher res than others (like Morrigan vs the newer SNK chars)
Myrient, holy shit, come on lately. I'd abuse it with jdownloader but then I'd just be part of the problem and I want this site to stay.
It works in LRPS2, but only with SSAA. So it looks a bit nicer but it's not in HD. When you enable highres scanout and SSAA textures, bloom is misplaced but it's not holy-shit-fucked-up like with GSdx uprendering.
Of note, there's some FMV corruption and strobing in PGS. I've noticed this in a few titles. I'm sure TheMaieaister or whoever will fix it in 2 years, maybe.
I wish software mode would work in LRPS2. Would make comparison shots and my life easier. I don't know why it's even a core option. "Fuck you, time to externally edit your opt file, asshole"

Retro Mac emulation is kind of rough across the board. Can I reasonably trust that game library torrents will stay up, and so I can just download whichever games I want at leisure?
Or could they be taken down in the future somehow, and thus I should download the full libraries for every console I want right now? (Honestly it would take more time to sort through the library than to just download it all)
I don't know much about technology, I know websites hosting ROMs are being taken down...but are torrents safe from that because they are decentralized?
Reason I ask is I'm a poorfag and I don't have the storage for all the libraries I want atm. I'd have to go and buy a big fat HDD. It's not impossible to buy it, I won't exactly have to miss meals if I buy it, but still given where I'm at it's not the best use of my meagre money.
>>532151059>Windows XPCan be virtualized or wrapped trivially, if they don't run outright. What WinXP game can one not play by these means?
>>532156853through WoW64 and wrappers, mostly yes. Virtuaization? Nah...
https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Windows_2000/XP/Vista_emulators#Other_solutions
>>532158480What do you mean, 'nah'? I've run NTware through virtualized XP-32 and 7-32 on plenty of occasions. It's usually a last resort and a pain in the ass, but it works.
There's an argument for 9x but NT's fine.
Again what NT title puts it in the same category as the fucking CDi, LaserActive, and iOS?
Every janky NT/XP arcade game is emulated even. It's so not a troubled platform to preserve.
>>532158737Beyond QEMU/KVM with GPU Passthrough, VMware and VirtualBox are useless for Windows XP, as the linked page indicates. Low-level emulators (IBM PC emulators), doesn't support Windows XP (duh!). Therefore, the most viable path remains relying on WoW64, hoping Microsoft doesn't disrupt it, and enhancing compatibility with wrappers. That's it.
>>532159534They aren't useless. I've run plenty of games in them myself. Are they what you want for system pushing 2008+ games? No. They will run lots of janky/low end 2000s games that have a little trouble natively, though. Said 2008+ games 99% of the time are fine wrapped. Again I ask. What fucking game can you not run and puts XP in such need of attention? Name one game.
No, not one game? Come on. I want to shove a screenshot in your face.
>>532159534>Low-level emulators (IBM PC emulators), doesn't support Windows XPWhat? But they do. You can even install fucking Windows Vista on 86Box (a terrible, terrible idea, but it's doable). Windows XP isn't ideal, but it would run relatively well with a high-specced machine. It's less a question of lack of support and more that the hardware you'd IDEALLY want to emulate Windows XP isn't available.
All that said, I *would* like for a PCem style solution to come along that's fast and capable enough to run a P4/Geforce4 tier guest. Athlon64 + 9700 would be the peak but I know that's way too greedy.
>>532159770I agree, VMware can run a good chunk of early 2000s games, particularly DirectX 9.0c titles, with wrappers getting roughly 65-70% of them working decently, as you pointed out. But itโs far from perfect. Some games hit snags due to the virtual GPU adapter, while others suffer from timing issues or audio glitches. VMware versions newer than 15.5.7 throws an ISB Renderer Comm error. CMR 3 is notoriously problematic on VMware. Other titles like Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault, Taz: Wanted, and The Sims 2 also have their own issues. These are just a few examples off the top of my head. On top of that, both VMware and VirtualBox dropped Windows XP support years ago, and we still rely on those instead of WoW64, which I don't think has a future
>>532160846Yeah, I'm aware of that. I'm talking about Windows XP DirectX 8.1 and 9.0c games and software here, lol.
https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Windows_2000/XP/Vista_emulators
>>532161413I will say I think I've noticed them getting worse in newer versions. Do those titles run okay natively through workarounds/wrappers? Granted, some of them may have been cursed from the start and no matter what machine you run it on. Sims 2 in particular.
Anyway I just don't know if "a few of the moldiest, crustiest, NT titles under the most obscure rock have issues" puts it in LaserActive tier. MacOS is worse off.
>>532161654I really don't want to use dedicated hardware for older Windows DirectX 8.1 and 9.0c experience at this point. It's been 15-20 years... I know we shouldn't expect a low-level approach like IBM-PC emulators, but I'm clueless about what else could be done;

Holy shit, no wonder this was filtered in the west! That's the tightest squeeze ever.
>>532393740I dunno, fuck with PPSSPP settings or find another cheat somewhere. There's the PS3 version. Who knows? The 360 version may be okay now.

Take your pick.
>>532390348Is it actually locked to 20?
>>532395043It's for Super Players, after all, and that's in one of the challenge worlds in an already challenging game.
>>532397302I definitely feel like a Super Player, I've beaten it at least 2 or 3 times so far!
Eden id the future of switch emulation they tell me.
Play ace combat 7. Vulkan gives me black screen, opengl gives me half screen.
At least with ryjujinx you get a functioning game minus the stuttering.
>>532387894thanks but it looks like no patchers seems to work for me.
>>532395043>state from slot 0You didn't beat the game
That game is on PC and I don't think he has Denuvo.
>>532401878Referring to Peace Walker? No, it isn't. 2 and 3 dropped but not that one.
>>532402849Ace Combat 7, I forgot the post.
Jesus Christ, this is insane...

>>532413186Elaborate. A lot of it is pretty sane and expected and has been done thousands of times. What part?
>>532413375this is insane in the best possible way, lol.
>still no switch 2 emulator
It's over..
>>532395043I wonder if anyone's made a hack of the original SMB2 that doesn't require you to beat the game several 8 times to unlock the extra worlds. It can be bypassed easily enough with a cheat I suppose, but god that sucks. Kinda find All-Stars aesthetic and instruments wack.
