Ramp dragon is my best deck but it has a really bad matchup vs rune. You don't apply enough early pressure and by the time you ramp to your big threats they can d-climb kuon and kill you. If they brick a little bit you chan cheese out a win with genesis dragon

Why do you choose card games as your PvP game of choice vs say a shooter or even some other turn based strategy game?
Personally my interest in shooters is nonexistent as I find it very hard to "improve" at them in a way that's satisfying. (Getting shot from who knows where on the battlefield repeatedly is not very conducive to interesting playtime; losing in a card game is still interesting if you can identify any misplays you did)
As for why card games specifically I find the variance element adds a bit a spice to what is otherwise a tactical affair vs games that are more deterministic like say Go.
Shadowverse isn't perfect but there's a reason why I've stuck with it even through the more ridiculous metas.

Combos are just copying 1:1 the ones pros do and learning when to apply them
For the opponent, mainly you should stick to 1 character and learn how to counter each character's main threatening moves with them. doing that will already bring you ahead. then as you get good you'll also find opponents who use their moveset better and will have time to learn all of them throughly
it's really not different than playing shadowverse or card games really. in some MUs you might need to use your cards differently or save them in hand. dropping apollo on turn 3-4 to clear some dudes is not as good as keeping him for luminous mage on 5
