This is an old, old topic, but for some reason...a strange and alarmingly neutral force compels me to lay down my 0.02 USD.
Killing enemies in Undertale is completely inexcusable in-universe. (Obviously it's just a game so this doesn't really apply to us but suspend your disbelief for a moment.)
The most obvious element in this is the fact that we can SAVE/LOAD. So as long as we *can* go through without hurting anyone, we should. This should be plainly evident to anyone who isn't a dipshit.
But even ignoring that completely, even if we couldn't SAVE/LOAD, there's two really big reasons why self-defense isn't an excuse.
Reason one. After you hit enemies, they surrender. Attacking and sparing both take a turn. Neither is 'safer' for the human at this point.
Reason two. You can run from every non-boss encounter in the game. This is actually safer than trying to fight. It's both more logical and also morally correct.
Then we come to the bosses.
Against Toriel you aren't in any real danger unless you go out of your way to run into bullets.
Papyrus literally cannot kill you and I believe he surrenders before his HP depletes.
Undyne is dangerous and it's entirely logical to run away when you have the chance.
The only instances I can think of where it's mostly justified to fight are against the sentry dogs of Snowdin (I don't remember if you can run away from them?), Muffet, Mettaton, and Asgore.

Today I had this fucked up nightmare about Chara appearing in Deltarune.
Basically, there was this strange interaction with a mirror in the game that pops up the box message, that one that appears to choose what Kris says or does with your SOUL. Except this one reflected an actual mirror In the text box and you would find another heart and there were no options to choose. For some reason my subconcious thought to open the window 9 more times, and I noticed my SOUL's reflection was gone, and instead it was placed as my heart's shadow. Then I started to move my heart anywhere like that cutscene in Chapter 4 where the rain stops when Susie asks "what were you two talking about"
And I moved my heart to invisible options, my "shadow" did as well, but completely out of place. There was this puzzle written on the lines and after a certain order, I managed to make the shadow SOUL be aligned with mine's. The screen darkened and only my SOUL remained until. "My Determination. My human SOUL..."
Without appearing, but speaking in the pure dark like a narrator, Chara gave a strange monolog where she explains that she is a God that will consume every world in existence and that everytime a number goes up, its her.
As she talked, strange music played as if it was the big villain reveal and all of that. Except the fact that, in the background, there were thousands of screens of different videogames grinding for EXP. One of them was Minecraft I think.
What a strange weird dream, looking at it back it was a bit ridiculous but dreaming it sent me chills lol

Now in chapter 4 Kris and Susie walk in on a Toriel that completely forgot about Kris for a whole day and was shown to be EXTREMELY happy about it.
The only thing that seems to be holding Kris back from doing something completely impossible to take back is that Kris enjoys being with Susie. You even saw it in the clearest way possible after the Toriel scene. Kris almost jumps out the window to chase after Susie, the one good thing still remaining.
What the fuck do you think would happen if in chapter 5, Susie and/or Noelle get annoyed that Kris is third-wheeling them? Imagine it's the big day of the festival, which Susie suggested going with Kris to all the way back in chapter 2, and now imagine she instead asks Kris to leave so she can be with Noelle instead. Or imagine that Noelle tells Kris to fuck off in harsher terms, and Susie doesn't defend Kris. How is that not basically the final coup de grace to Kris' self-esteem and will to live? A demonstration of Susie (and Noelle) also showing they'd be happier if Kris wasn't around?

I do think that Kris's feelings for Susie will cause some problems but with Kris it's just one problem out of many caused by their own reclusion and self-loathing where they exclude themselves and people start to move on or make distance to people trying to be close, maybe the straw that breaks the camel's back
