Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)
Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."
Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

yeah it's a NEET life
The only realistic way I can make something like simulation 69 with honeypop, and keep it with 256 waifus to rape, until they're mindbroken and become your sex slaves, is to make a procedural story engine for it.
But the issue is how to design such procedural engine to generate a story.
My initial idea is to make it like how VN generates all combinations of possible girls sprites using some layered system.

continuing from last post, I also will add an option to change the central/primary crosshair to something easier on the eyes, like a simple dot.

>>531202170what do you expect them to do? browse through the thousands of games that release each week and decide for themselves? they'd probably just quit buying games altogether if they had to do that.
The worst mistake you can make is not design your game for children. Look back at your favorite childhood games? I bet you they weren't specifically made for adults(but that doesn't mean they can't be enjoyed by them)

An average of 50 games get released on Steam every single day.
Any game released today has to compete with 30 years of available video games that are all still there and probably do something better than your game does.
Most indies and amateur gamedevs are not doing games because they want to tell a story, or because they want to make something that's genuinely fun and engrossing. They're only doing it because they think they'll hit big as a solo dev and become trillionaires.
There's also the problem of "forever games" that take up most of a player's time and attention. Millions of people are stuck playing the same live service gacha, BR, FPS game day in day out and they never touch another game... ever. Probably 80% of games on Steam don't even get played, most don't get finished.
Now, I'm not saying you shouldn't create games, you should, but don't expect to make any money or anyone to even play or care about your game. Even AAA studios are feeling the pain these days.

>>531221102That's a lot of words to basically say nothing of substance. Sasuga Sakurai-san.
I had the following idea for the :"lore" of a game.
There's 256 girls born with a mutant gene, like X-men, but that gene grants them to become like magical bitches that can shoot magical fireballs.
So they can go and fight like Goku and his hoes and Touhou.
But the issue is that they need to release like big clumps of the chaft of that energy.
Otherwise they will suffer a lot of pain if such energy isn't released.
But the only way to do so is to defeat another X girl in battle, because those are the rules of the magical ritual, that only one will be granted the victory.
But winning the battle, means that they will magically spawn a giant futa dick.
So if they win the battle they can use that dick as a funnel to expell the energy into the hole of another X cum girl.
In the end they're like forced to live in a remote island where they can magically fight each other.

>>531218513In the pathfinding section, for example, that is exactly what I mean: The soldiers flow around the buildings like water would.
The time at 21 sec you have linked: Iโm not sure what the gameplay implications are supposed to be; is this just cinema or are the units actually somehow interacting with each other in non-predetermined ways? Again itโs the liquids effect, the smaller side (1 dude) gets pushed away by the bigger force, plays a "hold shield up" animation.
If his AI actually sees an incoming attack and does a timed block, moving backwards, in response and that timed block actually reduces the damage that he will take; and the action is actually weighed against other actions this unit can take; I will say it has a formidable AI. But I think the section is just about the animations being played, not about the game logic - that one probably is just counting some integers down while both sides hack at each other.
Iโm saying all this just in response to the original poster who asked how such unit AI can run on the GPU.

Game design is the hardest part of gamedev. You cannot design a functional aircraft just by copying the surface-level components. You have to understand the fundamental underlying principles of how and why an aircraft flies, and until you do, all you can build is a Kenyan helicopter.

I think they are falling into a trap. I can see from his thinking about "if you spend 3 months on a game and it doesn't work out, that's great, because you didn't waste years of time on it!". This mindset is weird to me. So you're okay making 4 awful games that you scrap after 3 months, instead of 1 game you scrap after 1 year? To me this whole "make small games" movement is just about trying to strike gold. It's like "we can't trust ourselves to make a good game that will sell well that takes several years to develop, so lets pump out lots of small games quickly and see what sticks".
I don't like that as a game dev model and I don't like that as a business model. There was a pretty huge game dev YouTuber who preached the whole "make small games" mantra ad nauseum, and when he finally went and tried to make a small game in like 6 months, it was simply no fun to play and very undercooked. He seemed to be hoping he could make some decent income off pumping out games every 6 months, but it flopped horribly.

i have this code thats meant to rotate the camera and orient it with gravity, while maintaining the direction the player is looking in and it works but when the gravity isnt doing a large jump i want it to follow the gravitys direction.
picrel is a drawing of what is currently happening vs what i want to happen, any clue how i could make it work?
im clueless and stuck (again)
head.rotation = Quaternion.LookRotation(head.forward, -gravDir);
head.Rotate(Vector3.up, mouseX * sens * Time.fixedTime);
yrot = Mathf.Clamp(yrot + (mouseY * sens * Time.fixedTime), -89f, 89f);
cam.localRotation = Quaternion.Euler(yrot,0,0);

>>531251783To achieve the desired camera behavior where it follows the direction of gravity while maintaining the player's forward direction, you can modify your code to blend the camera's orientation based on the gravity direction. Here's a revised approach to help you achieve that:
### Revised Code
// Assuming gravDir is your gravity direction vector
Vector3 gravDir = Physics.gravity.normalized; // Ensure gravDir is normalized
// Calculate the forward direction based on the player's current orientation
Vector3 forward = head.forward;
// Calculate the right direction based on the forward direction and gravity
Vector3 right = Vector3.Cross(gravDir, forward).normalized;
// Calculate the new up direction by using the gravity direction
Vector3 up = gravDir;
// Create a rotation that aligns with the gravity direction while maintaining the forward direction
Quaternion targetRotation = Quaternion.LookRotation(forward, up);
// Apply the rotation to the head
head.rotation = targetRotation;
// Rotate the head based on mouse input
head.Rotate(Vector3.up, mouseX * sens * Time.fixedDeltaTime);
// Clamp the vertical rotation
yrot = Mathf.Clamp(yrot + (mouseY * sens * Time.fixedDeltaTime), -89f, 89f);
// Apply the vertical rotation to the camera
cam.localRotation = Quaternion.Euler(yrot, 0, 0);
>>531253883### Explanation
1. **Gravity Direction**: Ensure that `gravDir` is normalized. This will help in maintaining consistent behavior regardless of the magnitude of the gravity vector.
2. **Forward and Right Vectors**: Calculate the `forward` direction based on the player's current orientation. Then, compute the `right` vector using the cross product of the gravity direction and the forward direction. This ensures that the right vector is perpendicular to both the gravity and forward vectors.
3. **Up Vector**: Set the `up` vector to the gravity direction. This will make the camera align with the gravity direction.
4. **Target Rotation**: Create a `targetRotation` using `Quaternion.LookRotation`, which takes the forward and up vectors. This will orient the camera based on the player's forward direction while aligning it with gravity.
5. **Applying Rotation**: Set the head's rotation to the `targetRotation` and then apply the mouse input for horizontal rotation. Finally, clamp and apply the vertical rotation to the camera.
### Additional Considerations
- **Smooth Transition**: If you want a smoother transition when changing directions, consider using `Quaternion.Slerp` to interpolate between the current rotation and the target rotation.
- **Input Sensitivity**: Ensure that the sensitivity (`sens`) and time scaling (`Time.fixedDeltaTime`) are set appropriately for your game's feel.
This approach should help you achieve the desired camera behavior while maintaining the player's orientation and following the gravity direction.
>>531251783Ah, yes, I see. Since we separated out pitch to a different transform, the yaw transform should be always locked to the plane normal to gravity, so what we need to do is project head.forward onto the plane of gravDir.
head.rotation = Quaternion.LookRotation(Vector3.ProjectOnPlane(head.forward, gravDir).normalized, -gravDir);
I think the normalized call might be unnecessary, since LookRotation would also normalize. This might also have an edge case where it breaks if you try to do an instantaneous perfect 90 degree gravity change, or it might not, depending on Unity's implementation for these functions. If so, you'll need to keep a record of the previous gravDir and add the rotation difference between previous and current.

>>531270893This, but unironically. Yall need some soul.
>>531270673I've been into AI image gen for years and surprisingly I think it has been hitting a kind of plateau recently, local models seem unable to escape 1girl and veering from that doesn't give any good results. Whole internet is absolutely flooded with shitty AI porn images so much so that nobody gives a hoot about any of it anymore, it's all soulless.
Midjourney is one service that does some interesting stuff but it's all still a mishmash of pre-existing art and photography. This means actual drawfags and painters will be fine in the long term because they can actually make interesting poses and compositions that you can't easily make with AI.
>>531271518why do you lie
it can do multiple people just fine
even the white house uses ai image gen
wouldn't take game dev advice from you with their crap takes
>>531271428How about aspiring professionals?
>>531271241It already exists. You just weren't invited.
>>531271241I prefer the engine splits or the genre splits.
>>531271776>80% of /agdg/ splits to /m/ for mechadev general
>>531271776No. Those are amateur concerns. e.g. I'm a godaughter, but I can still answer Unity questions like figuring out how to fix the nuns&guns camera problem.
>>531271776Agdg is already /unity/ general so I don't see the point of that.
There are like 3 people using godot and 1 person using unreal.
>>531271626You misunderstand, of course it can do multiple characters (and even then it often requires tools like couple or regional prompter to make them) but that's all it does: characters.
You try to make a background and it will always be a 1 vanishing point corridor. Any composition more intricate and it starts to break down because it's mostly used for gooning and trained on making characters.
>>531271987What game devs deserve is an entire board around here. 3D, drawing, music and diy get a board, but not game dev?
My eyes hurt, I think I need to take a break from programming.
>Play my game
>Already know everything that the boss can do
>Already retried the boss 10 times to know how to dodge everything
How am I supposed to know if the game is hard or not?
anyone ever get an existential problem of 'what game am I making? What do I want to make? What am I doing? '
I made like 5 ideas that I want to make. I want to make every single one. But I know that I have to pick one.
>>531272550I'd rather it stay "niche".
Imagine the shitposting and namefagging.
God no.
>>531272657Wrong, you can pick all of them.
>>531256424>>531257801been there done that, im way too experienced as a dev to do shit for free anymore.
>>531272724How?
I'm listening because I really want to make all of them.
Also I can't just combine them all. Presentation is everything.
>>531272657make 5 prototypes to start with. shouldn't take more than 3 months.
>>531272657If you really don't have a preference then pick the one that'll take the least amount of time.
That way once you're done you can work on your next idea.
>>531272798You start then realize you donโt like the ideas as much as you think you did then move on.
I know I can pick numerous.
I know I can. I was just being dramatic.
I want to make 5 games.
>>531272657make sure your ideas aren't underdeveloped
>>531272657you do your research and pick the one that is most suitable for you currently

Learning the hard way that I should always make modular and re-usable components.
Is it possible to build the mega snowball game?
Hear me out here.
You build a large game in such a way where modular pieces of the game can seamlessly be shipped as smaller games along the way.

chatgpt has been extremely useful, but sometimes i miss the struggle of coding 100% by hand, scouring through stackoverflow and documentation to solve problems on my own
now i just describe the task/problem as vividly as possible and it comes up with a reliable solution most of the time
it's greatly improved my efficiency but i do still enjoy the process of slowly and painfully working my way through problems
i can't complain

When I watch vtubers who make art and when I look at art of all sorts and it makes me want to create something of my own and I feel distraught that I've never dedicated myself to creating anything is that a sign that I need to create things and change my life so that I'm working towards that?

Yes I am making a 'text adventure/MUD' with all the lessons that have been learned since the early days, yes it will be exclusively released on handmade handheld devices. Yes 203X will be the decade of MUDs after everyone follows my lead.

>>531277105>>531276293I've dropped that idea in here a few times already, make a multiplayer pong but it's actually a 2v2 online volleyball game (with cute girls).
Or make a pong game but it's just dodge ball (with cute girls) and hitting the cute girls makes them lose their clothing.
Or make pong but it's actually 1v1 baseball batting (or 2v2 or 3v3 for maximum mayhem) with power ups and weird stuff happening (think of lethal league but you can't move from your position).

Disco Elysium has shown the way. Yes, even before the full-voice update.
Not surprising that the shit-fuckers who raise up the corpse of ZA/UM are making a "mobile version" of the game.
>>531272657>>531273636Scope all of them. Plan what your MVP would look like. Make time estimates for how long you think it would take and double them and see which one you think you can finish in the shortest time. Pick that.
