I mean, Epoch is going to steal a metric fuck ton of your players. The question isn't will it, or how many, it's really only; for how long. If people are leaving to get a fresh experience, they're probably not going to return to Turtle. If they're leaving just to shake it up and try something new, they'll be back before they hit 30.

I do think Turtle will take a noticeable hit in the long term, unless Epoch's + content is as bad as or worse than Turtles, I would expect to Epoch and Turtle to become competing for players.

I fell for the Bronzebeard meme a few months ago when they released MC on the Alpha and the server is just dead. Nobody is ever on it. Ascension as a whole is dead right now and all of their devs are all working on projects that will never release (CoA, Bronzebeard, Wrath).
Every post they every make in their Discord gets reacted with "S10 WHEN". Nobody is playing on their seasonal server nor Area 52. Everyone just wants them to release a new season already after the dogshit that was wildcard but they just refuse, presumably because they wanted Season 10 to be when Wrath releases but clearly the Wrath content is not as ready as they thought it would be.
They could just release a temporary League 4 server to tide people over, but no. Apparently even that is too much effort for them and so they'll just keep adding more Mythic levels until they can finally release a new server in a year (if even that).

I am not predicting Turtle will die. Far from it. But rather I predict Epoch won’t be just a flash in a pan where it dies in a week like other FRESH have. There will be a gold rush followed by a dip followed by it stabilizing. Depending on how hard it dips it might wind up providing a comfy alternative to Turtle Wow, which is ironically what Turtle Wow was for years.
But it could easily crash if the server dips too hard and the devs decide to pull the plug. But given how much time has been put into it I don’t think they will.

For me I would say the custom content was better than on Turtle. More polished with more thought put into quests. Better writing with quest telling a story without having an NPC narrate to you in /say. But the abilities and spells and talents didn’t feel vanilla because well they aren’t.

I think both devs and those that want Epoch to succeed misjudge what people look for in a vanilla+ server. Epoch's "+" is not a plus anymore, and that will probably either kill the server or leave it at 1k server pop. Nostalgia is incredibly strong, the remake and remaster niggers understood it years ago. Well, to be fair it depends on the implementation of it. Blizzard's take where you can swap specs ANYWHERE including inside of instances rubs me the wrong way. I would be more fine with it if you had to be inside of a city or something.

Also I kind of like to level and play with a hybrid spec, a spec that's not perfectly optimized for one role. With dual spec you just use 2 optimized specs for different things and it's less fun that way to me. It's also a bit of power creep.

But I will say Epoch's implementation is a lot better especially if they don't lower the cost of it. Dual Spec is extremely powerful and should be something you work towards unlocking.

one of the biggest issues for me personally is just how SHIT tier low lvl BGs are on turtle due to twinking faggots just completely ruining the experience.

The low level battleground experience was pretty good before twinks went over. Battlegrounds were a nice way to take a break from leveling and dungeoning, and it was fairly easy to rank up in honor at the lower ranks. You could also get pretty good gear from honor and reputation that could help you while leveling. It was so easy to hit Honored, even Revered wasn't that hard, and doing so meant you had good rings and necklaces and weapons and such for leveling, with upgrades every ten levels.
But once twinks took over there just wasn't a point to doing the low level brackets any more. You'd either get stomped or roll depending on who had more twinks, but either way you were just useless.
Any private server that doesn't step in and curb the twink problem is messing up. Turtle Wow drops the ball hard in that aspect. Hopefully Epoch can pick it up.

As someone who twinked on Turtle this is 100% the truth. I had every other twink on my friends list and you could see after a loss the losing side would log off and then suddenly magically the winning side would gain just as many twinks as logged off. Then the next match would start yet it would be 6v1 (that poor 1 was some non-twink just trying to enjoy the BG who didn't care that his team lost the last game).

Vanilla+ is a lie.
Any addition added to Vanilla makes it more and more not Vanilla. Nobody can even agree on what constitutes Vanilla. Does adding an LFG tool work for a Vanilla+ server or does it make it too retail? What about summoning stones? There's no consensus.
But in truth Vanilla no longer exists. It died years ago. Because True Vanilla was not a decades old solved game. You played Vanilla not knowing what mysteries you would discover. The best times I had in the game were finding something weird just on my own. That happening again in the same game I've been playing for almost twenty year is not happening. Even if it's your first time playing you are playing with others who have a solved game mindset. So even a perfectly replicated vanilla server isn't really vanilla.
The truest vanilla server would be a completely custom server where it's New Game+ and all the quests and mobs and dungeons and raids and items and maps are different and even some of the lore is different. New classes. New races. Then you have a vanilla-like experience of discovery and wonder even though it's not vanilla.
Ultimately servers like Turtle Wow and Epoch should focus on providing players with a new experience that is fun and new, and not worrying "is this vanilla" so much.
Personally I would say the server that may come closest to providing anything close to a vanilla-like experience in terms of rolling back the clock and providing something new for you to adventure in and discover and explore is maybe Conquest of Azeroth.

What you're talking about never existed. If that's how you want to play the game, that's fine. But Thottbot was available at launch in 2004 and plenty of players used it because they were used to having similar databases from other MMOs. It was enough. I was one of the earliest 60s on my vanilla server and used Thottbot extensively during my journey to vanilla dominance. I also participated in optimal spec discussions on forums for my class. As did everyone else that enjoyed winning at these sort of games. Just because you aren't a goal-oriented player, doesn't mean a) these players haven't always existed and b) these players consider it fun, while simultaneously don't think that bumbling around "exploring" is all that fun.

I respect your sort of player that wants to do whatever and enjoy the "mystery." I like doing that too, in casual single player games. On the other hand, for MMOs specifically, some of us enjoy things related more to objective character performance.

Also, they say if weapons like thunderfurry stay relevant a for two tiers after it comes out then they're going to nerf it to be worse then current tier gear. Whys it matter when Naxx comes out? They've talked and even shown on their website that raid gear is getting its item level lowered so there wont be drastic jumps in item level between raids because they've want the game to continue after Naxx and they think Naxxs items get to powerful, they've already lowered the item level of stuff in MC like hand of rag.
Everything after MC will be lowered to reduce power creep, but they also want people to not keep using items from older raids and instead use new items so if theres an item bis two tiers or more later they're going to nerf it so people have to get new gear.

Regardless of your build for leveling, as priest your opener will be
Shield > holy fire / mindblast /smite (changes because of levels /shadowform ) > SWpain > wand.
You can be creative and add another spell (mindflay, blast, smite) before you wand but honestly you don't need to. You'll end up rarely drinking doing this and consumes plenty of slop media this way.
Adding more casts just wastes mana and consumes water.
