1950's doesn't fit into the overall lore at all. There are cool ideas you can do with this sort of setup, I'll give them that, but you still have to constrain it to the scope of Destiny.
Sounds stupid but Chrono Trigger is a good example of this. Even going back in time millions of years is still contextualised in the narrative framework of the game.
Destiny can't go back further than Golden/Dark Ages, that's just how it is, because the core plot is centralized around the Traveler. What are they gonna do, go back to Ghenhis Khan and figure out he had the blueprints to destroy the Traveler? It doesn't work. The Chrono Trigger example works because the catalyst is a billion year old doomsday catalyst.

New destiny dlc is really fun and the combat segments felt really well done as well with the new shit they added set bonuses and new weapons but sometimes it felt like it was added to just add something else and grind the feel of urgency during the story to a stop when you have to take 5-10 mins solving a puzzle while someone is screaming bloody murder in your ear

Overall, I think the objective of "make ammo more consistent" was achieved, but I also think the trade-off of special being more limited per brick makes the consistency less valuable. Most players are not going to give up leg armor slots for Scavenger mods, and I think that's why they shoved that discount mod in the artifact.
