Balde of Courage makes no sense. Sonic isn't a character and just stands there. What am I supposed to feal? How is anyone supposed to relate to this? IDW is much more clear with a cast of developed characters that express to the audience the emotions they should feel like Whisper. With poor drawings, incomprehensible writing, and no color it's like an unfinished draft compared to an actual premium quality product like IDW.

There's nothing wrong with character studies into why characters do or do not work together. The issue arises when a character exists solely for the sake of being a romantic object of affection for another. If the love interest is a female, they risk being flat and entirely unrelateable to the female audience. If the love interest is male, they risk being incredibly boring and coming across as a cockblock to the audience or main male character (i.e. Paul in Spider Man).

Shadow's story is about free will and overcoming those who think they own him or can mold him to their liking. In a way, his love for Maria is what allows him to have free will at all. He'd be someone else's weapon without it.
This isn't supposed to be a specific attack on an individual, but it's taken as such. I'm not sure why liking something Sonic-related a lot in a Sonic general is such a grave sin, but I'm not going to stop.

I'm just going to say it. I don't think IDW Sonic is a lost cause, I think the west can write windnic and I think the last arc got pretty close to it. I enjoyed a lot of the Riders are, the only thing that brought it was the duo/mimic subplot and Lanolin/Whisper's drama. Everything involving the game characters was enjoyable for me. I like that they started writing Sonic to give less of a fuck about things, it only got ruined at the end where he starts patronizing Clutch. If the writers can overcome their habits that lead to terrible writing like forcing contrived drama, these comics could be a lot better. Not perfect, but much more bearable.

Sonic and Knuckles have not been 'friendly rivals'. Knuckles is actively distrustful towards Sonic in Adventure 1 and Advance 2 where Dr. Eggman tricks him that Sonic is up to no good. Repeating his earlier distrust towards Sonic. The two are not friends. Rather, rivals. Even their interaction in Advance 3 is shown to be confrontational. The two are not friends as depicted by the original writers for Sonic. The first writer to try and push for 'Sonic and Knuckles as friends' was Maekawa with Heroes. Tails is Sonic's friendly rival, because they're friends who push and challenge each other. It's Sonic's goal to make sure he stays ahead of Tails while Tails desires to keep up. The possibility of Tails keeping up, and matching, but not just that, potentially surpassing Sonic, constantly pushes Sonic to improve and try his best. And Sonic as a constant goal gives Tails something to aspire to. It plays into their flat never ending character arcs. The issue is, Maekawa did not understand this nuance or how to write Tails in this regard. Instead, he wrote Tails as Sonic's 'technical assistant buddy' flanderizing his role as the team's mechanic which got worse as western writers started treating him as a stand-in for Rotor and Sally.

Tails is the Sidekick, Knuckles is the Rival, these are separate things. Both are Sonic's friends, but have massively different dynamics according to these roles. Tails is trying to catch up to Sonic, Knuckles challenges and competes with Sonic.
