Every dungeon is 3 bosses in a straight line, every map in the overworld is empty and void of players/things to do, the story has flatlined in quality, pvp modes I enjoyed have been removed(i liked 24v24v24), harder content still to this day is piss easy, crafting is dull and just macro'd

ffxiv is not an rpg.all classes feel the same, they all have a braindead 1234 -> 1234 rotation, gear stats don't matter, even gear ilevel doesn't matter because activities are ilvl synced. low levels are a complete slog because you'll have so few abilities that you are legitimately just pressing 123 over and over with no thought. healers don't matter at higher levels because tanks have enough self-sustain to not even need them. even if you skip cutscenes, you have to sit through 50+ hours of fetch quests and 'talk to this person -> talk to this person' quests. story isn't good other than shadowbringers which is *alright* -- the rest of it is standard jrpg slop that is worse than even fking marvel movies (maybe it's decent if you've never read a book and stopped attending school at 12 idk). the content is brain-dead easy other than extreme trials, netcode is trash so there's a multiple second delay from server -> client (esp if you're east coast US as the servers are in California), there's no socialization other than people edating in the main cities. it's honestly a terrible game.

Nah Dawntrail is just dogshit. Stormblood was, at worst, kind of boring compared to ARR and HW. Dawntrail is actually fucking awful. It shits on a lot of the consistent qualities that FFXIV has always had (worldbuilding, political intrigue, an ensemble cast, realistic and believable consequences to actions despite having a fantastical setting) for the sake of a shitty setting with an atrocious story that feels like the epitome of HR-approved slop.

There has been a larger volume of general negativity for the game since ShB just because of its increase in popularity, but that's just because there's more people. Of course there's going to be more vocally negative people. Just like there's going to be more vocal toxic positive people that will pretend DT is fine because there's a troon VA in it. The hatred of DT is pretty much universal, though. You'd have to be a retard to argue otherwise. Even the most unpopular character in ZZZ is more popular than any of the main cast members of FFXIV combined. Every day I see some ZZZ character (or any other Gacha character) going viral on Xitter. Mmorpgs have been dead for many years now. WoW and FF14 are like their own separate niches. Wha happened was that truly great mmorpgs early in the genre’s history like Ultima Online and SWG were concepts before their time when computing and internet bandwidth couldn’t properly support them so when WoW hit and dominated the genre everyone just tried to clone WoW instead of doing the next generation of advanced mmorpgs. The problem with cloning WoW is that none of the big-name projects had the talent and/or funding to actually do it so WoW remained the dominant factor, only sharing its stage a little with FF14.

Why hasn’t there been any good alternative mmorpg in the last decade? Competency crisis. Not even Blizzard could make WoW again and it was impossible for a better more advanced game to ever happen in this industry, and WoW is the MINIMUM gaming experience, not the ultimate expression. People sometimes wish “imagine if there was SWG but with modern technology: etc but the brutal, sad reality is that such a thing is as impossible as wishing for the government to just stand up, do the right things and make your country a great place to live — because that’s not how society works.
