While playing XVI, you cannot escape this "on our terms" theme. And as far as Final Fantasy goes, this is a saltine cracker with no water. Yes, we all want to live on our own terms and to not be programmed into a system of control that we don't give consent to. Yes, we all want freedom from oppression/slavery. But what are you really trying to say about that? How is any of this conveyed to the player? It's through the most literal, painted by the numbers shit you've ever seen. Le slavery is BAD. Ya get it? Freedom is GOOD. Ya get it? How is the "system of control that we don't give consent to" depicted in this game? The most generic "empire bad" you've ever seen, with absolutely no interesting motivation conflicts whatsoever. And how do they enact the systems of control? Le MURDER! He can materialize it from out of nowhere, it seems to have special magic compared to what anyone else can do. How much of the power that Sephiroth displays is actually himself, how much is the Masamune? How much is JENOVA? Is it Sephiroth himself who has the power to cut a hole in reality and send Zack through it? Or is that a power of the Masamune?

Coincidence? Who is to say. Personally, I think not. Both men understand many similar things about what makes a video game deeply enjoyable, despite not being everyone's cup of tea.

Personally, Masamune being "alive" like an organism is definitely cool, weird, science fantasy. It fits in with Final Fantasy VII tone just fine, but like a lot of the supplemental material in VIIR, is really just a bonus fact. Doesn't really change anything about events, it only adds a little new flavor.
