The Underfell section in Deltatraveler at least has pretty fun gameplay so far. Actually it's nice that the game as a whole has been making me use all the mechanics and the bullet patterns have been tough, like I've never once used the tired / sleep stuff in the actual DR since it's never been needed and I've been burning through a lot of supplies with just general fights.

I think FRIEND is probably very similar to Flowey, but critically without the "everyone, everything in these worthless memories, let's turn 'em all to dust" genocidal malice that Flowey has. I think it has something to do with the fact that Souls are needed to seal Dark Fountains, and you seemingly can't exist in a Dark World without one. Or at least, Kris knows it's unadvisable to take out the soul in a dark world. This theory is pretty crack, but the points raised are pretty valid:
1) The game uses "You" and "Kris" interchangeably. One would think that this distinction would be one of the most important things, but nope. The Spamton NEO's fight in Snowgrave is kinda ruined by that.
2) The game uses "Kris' SOUL". This is basically unforgivable and have no excuse.
3) There's no clear "rules" of what Kris can and can't do when the SOUL is inside him. Kris clearly can act on his own even with SOUL inside, we see it numerous times. So why take it out?
This is very problematic. The fact that many believe that Kris is some kind of a Flirt-Master-9000, even though it was supposed to be SOUL shows that the lax and inconsistent rules kinda confused and misdirected people.
The fact that Chapter 3 fountain sealing was time-skipped is infinitely bad: how can SOUL be a player if player presence isn't even necessary.
A lot of those points could have been fixed easily if not for lackadaisical attitude from the game devs regarding Kris-SOUL dichotomy, which kinda hurts the game.

You and the game are asking the wrong question, people arent having fun with those aspects, at least not JUST them. The games themselves make it fun through every other aspect of game design. Human nature loves it when number go up (Killstreaks), it likes loud bombastic noises and cool flashes (The music, sound design, and art direction), and most importantly, the games dont treat it like its actually a crime. The people you bomb are not innocents majority of the time (majority as in I cant think of another example where its treated as a heroic act outside of spec ops), it's always the bad guys who will revel in the bad parts of war themselves. Innocents arent even present in most war shooters Ive played, and if they are you are punished for putting them in harms way. And then with multiplayer shooters especially, a lot of people are playing them so they have something to do with their friends. i definitely very strongly feel like toby isn't going to lecture you for being a bad person if you actually don't do anything really bad. Nothing really felt like a 'punishment' in Undertale except the later parts of the genocide route and you could definitely argue that everything up until the very, very end, after you killed Asgore and cursed your file, was still in the realm of being 'cool' and 'showing you more depth to the characters and story' rather than a 'punishment'. And even the VERY end was arguably necessary to see at least once to fully appreciate the game and its takes on the meta-narrative concept.

Deltarune is obviously going to end up having some shit to say about the 'agency' of characters in a work of fiction who aren't allowed to do anything outside of what they're programmed or controlled to do or whatever, but there's nooooo way Toby's going to actually try to make the average player feel bad, especially with how aware he is now that most players are going to go for the normal/kindest-possible story paths and it's more a loud minority who are going to go out of their way for the 'bad' path. I do expect to be chastised more for even watching someone else do the weird route and *some* kind of commentary on things even in the goodest-possible route, but I think it'll be less that "players are inherently guilty for controling video game heroes against their will" and more that we'll get a *little* that *starts* to seem like it's going in that direction as we learn more about Kris's full story and situation, only for the actual endgame to give us opportunities to show the characters we mean them no ill intentions, or even care about their pixellated asses (or do/don't, respectively).

Ultimately though, even though he does it quite well I think, I really, really, *REALLY* fucking hope Toby puts the meta narrative obsession away for his next project... or several projects, after Deltarune. The dude is so gifted at just writing funny, witty, 'real'-seeming dialogue and characters, great at designing unique and appealing characters (even if less-so at fully realizing them without Temmie and other artists) and obviously composing music. I'd love to play a few games, or watch a few cartoons, or read a few multimedia webcomics of his that just focused on those strengths and didn't dilute so much of it with this honestly at times legitimately uncomfortable and bizarre, and yes, guilt-causing-for-potentially-stupid-reasons, meta-narrative shit. At the very least, I'd love to see what I thought of a full piece of media made by him that completely lacked it, to see if it's REALLY that important to the overall enjoyment of his works so far or just kind of "also there", even if they're core concepts of both of them so far.
