3) Defeating a boss gives you an extra permanent powerup that makes other bosses or stages easier, in a Rock-Paper-Scissors type setup as opposed to "just" an increase in numbers, which gives meaning to choosing stage order
4) Something about the platforming feels unique, but I can't tell if it is real or cope. I think it has something to do with the jump strength being relatively high, meaning there is extensive verticality and not just horizontal motion. Compare verticality in SMB vs MM1, for example, and those do "feel" different.
