This is wrong on many levels. Heal heals about 20% less than barrier shields. "Covering your support's mistakes" is not your job, if your support fucks up your job is to leave them to die.
Any decent botlaner will try to abuse you for the ONE MINUTE cooldown gap between heal and barrier.
The only case where I find heal any useful is vs pyke since shielding his ult doesn't do anything to stop it but healing back above execute threshold does. Still, pyke is one of the better champions at abusing you for the aforemention cooldown difference between summs and if you happen to run barrier in a pyke lane you just use it at about half HP or when you're about to receive a big instance of damage in general. All it takes is being mindful not to instinctively use it for his ult.

If you're so inclined to run something other than barrier on ADCs there's ghost and exhaust, both are also 240s cooldown like heal but they scale amazingly in comparison. They're terrible in lane but amazing out of lane. If you think you can get away with these they might be worth a shot.

So I get the dilemma whether I should keep pushing but be a target for the jungler, or try to counter-roam but leave my tower vulnerable despite shoving waves. You should get off the lane at all times possible in mid.
Every time you have prio (shoved the wave into their tower) you should look to roam to where your jg is, to where anybody is overextended, etc
Even if you can bully someone under their tower with a spell or two, making them lose 2-3 cs isnt as useful to your team as a ward on path from enemy raptors if the drag is spawning is, or being first to the scuttle fight that's about to break out.
Unless you can 100% kill or force a recall, the gameplan of mid is always get prio and move to where your team is, even as a mage.
